Subject: Magnet/Pro Pack problem. Please Help!

jpalo ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2001 at 7:46 PM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 5:22 AM

I just upgraded my Poser 4.03 to the Pro Pack and right away installed Service release 2 for Pro Pack. When I open a .pz3 file or a character that had magnets attached to them that worked fine before I upgraded seem to have a problem now. When I go to the body part or prop that the magnet is parented to, the parameter dial for the magenet shows up twice, but only one of them works. If I save the file and open it again, the dial shows up three times, and still only one of them works. I've tried this with several different files and this happens every time. Is there a way to fix this? Please let me know. Thanks.

Go back to Poser4.0, then install the ProPack and SR2. Skip the update to Poser4.03

Okay, I uninstalled the ProPack, reinstalled Poser4.0, reinstalled ProPack, and reinstalled SR2. I still get the same problem. I also created a new PZ3 file with just the P4Fem and a magnet parented to her to test if I'll get the problem. I still do. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.

I have had this problem with the ProPack as well. I also had it - although less consistently - with Poser 4.0x (never installed 4.03).... The most helpful feedback I have been given is a suggestion that I should not be saving parented magnets in the PZ3. Apparently, they should be saved to the library, and applied on a case-by-case basis. Because the problem is so pronounced on the PP, I have simply not been using it.... The deformers are a very important part of Poser. Please fix them, Curious Labs Guys!!!

Nice to know I'm not the only one who saw this problem. I need magnets on my characters. I use modified versions of WyrmMaster's breast mags on most of my female characters which not only change the size and shape of breasts but the same set of magnets make clothes fit and can be used for posing. I also attach a magnet to hair for posing as well. If I don't find a solution to this, I may have to stop using ProPack until a solution is found.

Forgive my newbie question, but why keep the magnets with the figure after you are satisfied with the result, and not spawn morph target and save the magnet as a prop for future modification? What concept am I missing here? On the other hand, I've noticed that magnets that I saved as props in P4 don't seem to have exactly the same effect since I installed the ProPack - anybody else observe this?

Personally, it'll take me a long time and a lot of trial and error before I'm satisfied enough to spawn a morph target. And in cases like when I use a magnet for posing hair, I've found it easier to leave the magnet on the character's hair rather then saving the magnet separately and bringing it in every time I want to use the character. I haven't tried any magnets I have saved as props since I upgraded to ProPack so I don't know if there's a difference yet. Before this goes too far off topic, does anybody out there know of a fix for the problem I brought up in the beginning of this thread. I've got an idea or two for work-arounds that I haven't had a chance to try yet, but I'd prefer a fix to this "bug".

I feel that it is much more flexible to keep the magnet attached than to create a morph for each instance. I used to spend hours fighting with established morphs, ending up frustrated and not quite satisfied with the results. If I am using the magnets to create the deformation it makes more sense to me to keep the magnet attached, particularly if I am not going to re-use the deformation in future situations. I don't need extra MT's cluttering everything. I have been much happier with Poser since I began using magnets and stopped thinking in terms of MT's for everything. I just wish the magnets would be less buggy.... What are the work-arounds you've learned? The only escape that I have found from the multiple references is to delete the magnet and re-apply. :( Have you looked in the .cr2 to see how the multiple references show up? Maybe they could be manually deleted from the .cr2 or .pz3. Kind of a hassle....

I can find my way around a .cr2 or pz3 file well enough to delete the extra references, but not enough to figure out how to solve the problem or even if the fix is even in the .cr2 or .pz3 file. The work-around I have in mind is to parent the magbase to to something other than what the magent is deforming. In my test, I created a magnet on P4Fem's shoulder. Saved it, opened it, had the problem. Added a square to the scene, moved it into the shoulder and parented it to the shoulder. Then I changed the parent of the magbase to the square and then scaled it down. Saved it, opened it, and no new extra references this time. Looks like the extra references only get created when a magnet is deforming something it's base directly parented to. Anybody else wanna see if this works for them?
