"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Lots of tesselation and extruding of faces. The detail paneling are three procedural textures used as a diffuse, highlight, and bump map.

I'm not sure yet. I might just throw greebles on it for added texture.

**Becco_UK,
**I ended up shrinking the scale of my procedural plate texture and that gave the ship some better texture. I used the diffuse texture as a bump also. See my gallery for the latest render in modo.

This dude here is an element in a larger render There is a lot to do yet just showing off that he is rigged and ready to go.

Quote - this is what I've been modeling. Fairly recognizable, isn't it?
Is the body all one mesh? Or separate parts?
www.youtube.com/user/ShawnDriscollCG
It's mostly one mesh. (Also no underbody, since I don't know what's going on there. I suppose somebody could hack the model apart and add stuff after I'm done with it, if that kind of detail is needed.) Doors are separate parts though. Side door will be last thing afaik, since it's the one thing that's notably asymetric on the vehicle. If you look under Wings3D/WIP in the galleries, you'll see some of the wireframe too.

The Dalek model now has its own WIP thread in the Renderosity/Cinema4D thread: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2792429

Cool dalek, blaster, and spaceship guys. :)
Anyhow, if anyone liked that van, there's a more up-to-date WIP in the gallery.

Anyways I have a few renders in mind based on known space by Larry Niven this is my belter girl. She lives in low to zero gravity most of her life so her proprotions are different long and lithe. Still working out shaders and then will rig and set up a series of morph targets will go over a few more times to clean up any geometry I need to. She has a helmet too.

Jag - like the one Inspector Morse drives (bonus points if you know his first name without googling it)

I've done the tire modeling before, but be careful doing it that way. It's funny just how high that polygon count can go. I've heard some folks say that normal maps are the way to go with making treads, provided the tools are there to do it.
Looks great though. And yeah, the "top down" way is easier for making most vehicles than the "bottom up" way when doing polygon modeling.
