Oh yes, the Solo button, I'd forgotten about that, thanks JonnyF.
Now that Jonny F has remiminded us about this, Rosie if you have the Bryce Bible there's a whole section about this - from page 145 to 148 - and Solo may be misleading as you can select a number of objects in the scene and then go to 'Solo mode' and only see those items - you can even render in Solo mode.

In the icon tower of each object there is an [A]. This is the attributes icon. Click this to bring up the objects attribs. In right of the box there is an option to make the object 'hidden'.

that we can turn things- objs, obps, 3ds etc.. invisible when we working..like in photoshop.. where we hide layers.
