Subject: Help Needed for Sky,Water & Terrain-Pack V2

I need a little help for the above product.
I am using Poser7

  1. In Poser7, how to change the Sky Texture for SkyDome. When I select Material Room, the image selection don't come.

  2. How to continous rotate SkyDome so the scene will look little live.

To change the image for P7 skydome, enter the material room and click on image_source on the Color_Texture node (depicted as 1 in the image above).  That will open the Texture Manager panel, click browse (depicted by 2) navigate to the skydome texture folder to select a new image.  The path for the skydome textures is *Textures*>*Modualz>Sky.

*BTW, IIRC, there is no way to rotate the skydome automatically for animation.

My Environment Sphere (free) can be rotated. Just use Y Rotate to spin it.

That's the wrong shader setup for a sky dome. People actually buy stuff like this?!?

The Diffuse_Value and Specular_Value should be 0, and the image connected to Alternate_Diffuse, or to Ambient_Color with Ambient_Value = 1. Whatever it is connected to should be white.

Yeah, unfortunately that came bundled with P7 as additional content.  I even cringed when I saw that set up.

Thanks I have downloaded your Free EnvSphere and put in my Scene
Then I got this Image but didnt' got the nice render
In the Material Room I selected EnvSphere and connected this Image in Panoramic Image Source.

Your camera focal length determines your field of view. Your field of view determines how much of the EnvSphere image you see in the render. If you use a narrow FOV, then you must have a VERY large image or it will be blurry. Either use extremely large images (at least 10K by 5K) or make your camera show a wider FOV.

Here's a visual demonstration. This render of a camera and environment sphere was done with a focal length of 20 mm.

The sphere has been darkened except one area. That area is what is seen by the simulated camera you see, which is set to 80 mm focal length.

Clearly the area seen by the 80 mm camera is much smaller than the 20 mm camera - way smaller.

When the 80 mm camera renders, the highlighted area is expanded to the full size of the render.

Here is the render from the 80 mm camera depicted in the previous image.

It is blurry, even though the image on the EnvSphere is huge. It is 9100 x 4550. But it is still blurry at this focal length. You just have to stay away from zoom focal lengths. Stay under 50 mm, and 20 to 35 mm is best.

You are really great **baginsbill ** I was trying to understand your tutorial of Envsphere, Its a great tutorial.  

Can you please link a free pz3 file with your EnvSphere with a great sky showing

The Image I was mentining above is 2400 x 1200. 

so I can put my these figures and they should look nice.

Hmm. To post PZ3 with a great sky, I'd have to also post the sky image. I generally don't do that since then I'd have to find out what the copyrights are on the image. I tell people where to get sky images (flickr) and you would just load it on the EnvSphere and deal with the copyright.

Most of the images on flickr are free for non-commercial use in derivative works. But sometimes that means you must use it in some way that does not actually copy the work as-is. For me to post a copy of it would require that I post it as-is and then I'd have to figure out if I'm allowed to do that or get permission to do that. Also, I may someday offer some commercial version of EnvSphere or a variation or something, and then things could get confusing about copyright.

So - I don't really want to do what you ask.

Now - I could post a blank PZ3 with the EnvSphere loaded already and the camera set to 20mm focal length. But that won't save you any time. You could do those two things yourself in less time than it took me to write this post. Of course you have to move your camera to get closer to the subject, but I can't do that for you - I don't have your scene.

I particularly like the philohome images because they have no ground objects.

Don't forget to learn how to use my shaders.

In that last render, I modified the shader settings like this, to make a super-saturated blue and increase the contrast. This is like using a polarizing filter on a camera.

Realize also that the main point of the EnvSphere is not to look at directly. It is to provide lighting for IDL, and something to reflect for shiny objects.

If all you want is a clean background image, then don't bother with the sky sphere. Find a nice sky photo, an ordinary photo. Load it onto a Poser one-sided square. Set the shader up same as the one for the environment sphere. (The shader will work on any object, not just the sphere.) Then you still can manipulate saturation and contrast, but it can be done with any image, not just an equirectangular one.

You then scale the square in x and y until it has the same aspect ratio as the original image. I usually just type the image dimenions into the scale factors. So if my image is 800 by 600, I use xScale=800 and yScale=600. Then I may adjust the overall size of this rectangle use the master Scale. Then position it behind your subject. It works great for backgrounds.

Of course, that image is so good already, there is no reason to alter the colors. I restored the shader to normal setings here.

I scaled the square to 1500%. I loaded an airplane in front of it.

Voila.

The size of the image for a billboard or for the EnvSphere?

Like I said, for the EnvSphere, you need an image at least 10K by 5K.

For a billboard, it only needs to be big enough to fill your render.
