Subject: Book for Poser 7

kenmo ( ) posted Thu, 20 May 2010 at 8:32 AM · edited Wed, 26 February 2025 at 3:44 PM

I'm a complete 100% Poser noob and dummy... I recently purchased Poser 7 and now looking for a book to assist me...

I see two listed at Amazon...

Poser 7 Revealed: The Efrontier Official Guide
Kelly L. Murdock

OR

Practical Poser 7
Denise Tyler

Which would be the best for a Poser 7 novice?

Thanks kindly,.....

Ken

PS: I've been reading the Poser tutorials by Paul Francis in 3D Artist mag but they are presently a little advanced for me...

I'm not completely sure about that kenmo, however I have been known to do beginner training sessions on a one to one basis.  I had a guy much like yourself a few weeks ago, he had used Daz Studio but had not the faintest idea about Poser.  I had him up and running in an hour.

If you are interested, let me know through the site mail and we'll arrange a suitable time when we are both available.

There is the Manual, available as a pdf file in the poser folder or off the help menu. There are a bunch of tutorials at DAZ and here , probably runtimedna and a bunch of other sites.

You might ask at your local library system and see if they have anything. I hear Practical Poser is quite good.

Ken, if you're looking for a good book on Poser 7 take the one by Deecey, Practical Poser 7.

She's a member here and it's a great book.  I happen to own that one.

I agree with Victoria_Lee.  I have both Practical Poser 6 and Practical Poser 7 and they are much more suited for the novice.  I also do own Murdock's Poser 8 Revealed and it does have a fair share of grayscale illustrations and examples.  However, certain references made within the text are better clarified with color plates.

Whatever you decide, check at abebooks.com , as you can probably find a used copy since Poser 8 has been out for a while...

I have Practical Poser 7, which I also think is a good starting point for those just getting their feet wet in Poser 7.

This forum, however, will become your main textbook once you've covered the basics. Although search is a bit lame, searching by date-range will filter out much of the pre-Poser 7 stuff and then adding a specific user narrows the search even more. That said, it leaves a lot to be desired if you're in a hurry. If you just want to browse though, you'd be surprised at the gold nuggets you find.

It is a good idea to at least try Search on a topic before starting a new thread: chances are very good the question has been asked a few times before.

I have Poser 7 Revealed on My desk all of the time.   However,  now that I am almost permanently using Poser Pro 2010 it has become less useful.  So If You want to come and get it,   mine is Yours..!!   ;0)

Robyn is correct in mentioning the additional lessons you can learn checking the forum.  For example, you will never learn and understand the concept of Gamma correction in any of the regular versions of Poser.  It is an issue that has been bounced around over the last several years and is now being directly and seriously addressed by many technical users.  The notable Bagginsbill gets the nod for his noble effort.

And how to build a better shader.  Marginally mentioned in the texts and it doesn't get the attention it truly deserves.

Read the manual and the books, then jump onboard into the forum where the information is free and plentiful.

I went thumbing thru your gallery... Yeah, you'll have fun with Poser once you get the hang of it. I'm pretty new to Poser as well.  , and these guys are pretty darn supportive, and know their stuff.  And if all else fails, Google what you're trying to do, and most likely there's a tutorial for it (most of which I found to be located here at R'osity)

This pic was done with all textured 'primitives' (with the exception of the SkyDome and V3)

I was trying to prove to myself that I don't have to be dependent on pics I download for backgrounds and this is what I came up with.

I purchased the Practical Poser 7 book by Denise Tyler from Amazon and it arrived yesterday....

Thumbing though the book I was quite impressed with it and will obviously enjoy the book once I start to read it, which will probably be in late fall. Summer is really too busy for anything other then photography and car shows...

I believe the purchase of this book was money well spent and look forward to reading it...

Cheers

Ken
