Subject: Watermark on images

Bea ( ) posted Sun, 06 June 2010 at 12:31 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 2:50 AM

There have been a lot of comments (particularly in the copyright forum) about theft of images.
I know that Rendo has said that they cannot prevent people saving images out of the gallery.
Would it not be possible for Rendo to add a watermark to images to make it more inconvenient for those people who want to take images and claim them as their own or add them to their own websites?
If ther was an option on uploading an image to have a watermark added that might please a lot of people.

Can't you just add your own watermarks?  If people are so concerned about someone stealing their art, maybe they shouldn't upload anything.

Because not everyone knows how to. Not everyone had 2D graphics software that they know how to use and because for some time there have been requests for Rendo to help make things more difficult for those people who want to steal images from this site.

True, but people steal images from tons of other sites too.  It is one of the downfalls of uploading ANYthing .... someone, somewhere, might copy/download/steal it.

Personally, I just don't think it is Renderosity's job to watermark anyone's images, that should be left up to the individual.

Why not? If there is something that might help why would it not be up to the site to make it safer for its community?
This is one of the larger communities here why wouldn't they do something that might help prevent theft. I have seen so many posts in the copyright forum from people who have found their's and others' art on other sites being claimed as belonging to someone else or being sold or given away as tubes etc. If there was a way to slow that down or atlest make it a little more difficult why wouldn't Rendo do so?

Maybe they will, but my point is..... if an artist really wants to protect his work, that artist should find a way to watermark it or keep it offline.

It should not just be left up to whatever site allows you to upload images.  The artist does have a responsibility also.  They cant just complain about people stealing their art and leave it up to everyone else to prevent the theft.

You may be right - but I believe that sites with communities like this one should also be thinking of what they can do to help. Deviant Art can do it why can't Rendo?

We have to remember that this site attracts people of different skill levels. Some of them might not even think that their art was at risk.

Well, if their art isnt very good to begin with, it probably wouldnt get stolen anyway, lol.

If Rendo tries to do something that's great, but if not, then these artists need to try to do something themselves.

Hiya, I was asked a few years ago to do a tutorial on how to create a watermark, well the way I do them as there are various ways, here is a link, if you don't have photoshop then the idea can be used in programmes like paint shop pro
http://www.lullys.com/%21POSER/COPYRIGHTBANNER/index.htm

Once you have made 1, you can just save it and use it over and over again.

I know Deviant art has a facility for adding a watermark so it is feasable, but in the meantime it might be an idea to add your own and remember to save the original before adding watermarks, I've made the mistake of adding watermarks then realising I didn't save one without it. lol

At the end of the day however, those who do steal your work and wishes to take the time to remove the watermarks, will.
