Subject: Special characters in filenames?

pjz99 ( ) posted Sun, 13 June 2010 at 5:35 PM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 8:17 AM

Would anyone freak out and/or foam at the mouth if a Poser filename contained a special character "é" (for example, "lamé") in the filename?  From a technical standpoint, under modern versions of Windows at least, this is not a problem, and Poser 8 can handle it fine.  It's not a really big deal to me, but my inner Asperger is really bothered by calling something "lame" when it should be "lamé".  Any opinions?  Thanks.

No problem .... if you specify what language you're using, no?

It's not really language-dependent, "lamé" is always "lamé" (it's a French loan-word).  Obviously it'd be a different story in Cyrillic alphabet but I can't really cover that.

Oh ... I only ask because when I press the "e" key on my keyboard, it does not come up with an accent acute on the "e" that is displayed so I would not know how to put that character in a filename anyway, that's all. 😄  If we are using English, there would be no accent on the "e" anyway, no?

No problem with this on Mac OS X.

The character can be obtained under Windows with the Charmap utility, if you have an English-only keyboard (you can also type ALT+0233).

While the "é" character may not be on an English keyboard, it is nevertheless wrong to use the word "lame" when you mean "lamé".

THIS IS NOT LAME.  (at least not in my book)

I agree. The "lame shaders" has been bothering my eye for a long time. And exactly because they're NOT LAME!

(they are, however, lamé)

I just went through the Wikipedia article on keyboard layouts and gah I pity all of you who has such limited keyboards. I mean for real. It must be very inconvenient to type ANYTHING but English on them.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

Poser handles other character sets nicely, as long as the basic keywords remain
in pure ASCII.   Japanese figures use plenty of Shift-JS characters.

You might check, though, to see that the é shows up properly on various computers,
especially in the P8 library that depends on Flash or whatever it is.

It works in my P8, but different installations might vary.

I've had no problem with filenames in other character sets, but when someone uses the copyright symbol ( © ) in a shader node, it loads fine once and then has extraneous characters after saving it.

Yeah this will only be in the filename for a MAT pose.

Yeah like DAZ does for V3/M3 etc ;)

Anyway the consensus seems to be that peoples' heads are not going to spin around and projectile vomiting will not occur, so I'll go ahead and properly call the MAT pose "Lamé".  Thanks :)

The addition of accents onto letters doesn't bother me in the least, nor does their absence.  The ASCII English character map (as used on a keyboard) is limited but I believe the intent is that many words (and therefore the way they are pronounced) is as much context dependent as anything else.  English contains many words which depend on context for the way they are pronounced and also their meaning.

That's the problem with being a compromise language with Germanic roots which then adopted words from yet other languages.  The French say they have a word for everything (they haven't) but English has at least three.  :)
