An interesting, although truly nasty article about Thomas Kinkade's business @ Salon.com

How was it that went again?

... and if you can appreciate schadenfreude, don't miss the reply comments.  Some are more fun than the article:

-- "He's an artist. That's not exactly a career known for mental stability."

-- "He's a parasite, a purveyor of some craptacular parallel world where Day-Glo sh** passes for "light"."

-- "This whole article made me like him more. Especially the peeing on Winnie the Pooh story."

I'm not going to comment on the situation....but, seriously, is schadenfreude the new hipster buzzword?

What?  JenX hasn't been visiting the "Hipsters' Buzzword-of-the-Day" website?

Along those lines however, that is, if we are examining some of the unusual language applied there, one really must admire any correspondent who could employ the proper usage of the word "craptacular".    I found that particular term, in itself, an inspiring concept that may in fact lead me to a whole new genre in my own artistic pursuits!

SnowSultan ( ) posted Sun, 20 June 2010 at 12:49 AM

I didn't know he did all those ridiculous things, lol. However, I've heard far too many people here criticize him as an artist (in the past, not in this thread), saying he paints the same thing over and over and, as one of the comments mentioned says, "day-glo sh*t passes for light".  Most artists create pretty much the same thing over and over, and frankly, there are VERY FEW on this site with his skill. People rendering naked Vickis without ground shadows ought not to throw stones.

Please correct me if he's not really the creator of the works with his name or if there is other shady business going on with him however.

I thought I was going to be the only one to say I actually liked his work (thanks, SnowSultan). He may have issues as a human, but he did pretty nice artwork. No, it's not everyone's taste, but it is mine. And yes, it does beat the eternal Vickie glancing around for her clothing once again in a temple trying to return the sword she'd borrowed to smash walnuts with.

But, to each their own.

I couldn't stand the saccharine sweetness of his work, but he was extremely talented in his art, I'll give him that.

Too bad for him.  He seems to have let his ego get the better of his greed, so: Boomz, Baby.  Bye-Bye.

Most artists go through a mid-life drawing phase in their life.  This is nothing new.

A toy, he liked to rub up against it. People have asked if it's an eyepatch, a tumor, and other crazy things, but it's just a plush mouse toy.   ;)

Must be a girl thing.  I can sit and just look at his painting for ages... there's something soothing, something homey about them.

I'd love to do artwork like his, except with Poser.

Looks like a bit of a collage to me, Shawn... and not a very good one. Someone superimposed all that violent rubbish on to one of his paintings.

His paintings have soothing colors and themes and are therefore soothing. Don't think I could stand a whole house full of them tho ;o). But like Robyn, I've always wanted to achieve the look in Poser.

Well if anyone else like's his works, you should see our very own DOM1 right here in the Vue Galleries! DOM is one of the few artists here I do follow in the galleries! I love images like those! Very rustic and homey and folksy. I almost expect to see pixies peeking out from under the flowers sometimes!

From the article: "And then there was the time he supposedly relieved himself on a Winnie the Pooh statue in a Disney hotel in Anaheim, Calif., while saying, "This one's for you, Walt." "

Okay - I can give him mad props for that one. I don't care who you are, that was funny. :)

My ex used to get all hot and bothered over his stuff (even kept badgering me to buy a huge one, but I didn't feel like taking out a second mortgage. No frickin' way, dude). Me, I figured it was fluff at best, and his work never really blew my dress up, so to speak. Made for the masses, etc. I think I even used the term "McArt" once in describing one of his paintings.

Maybe made for the masses, but certainly not the kind of work that can be made BY the masses.  :)

LostinSpaceman: Yes, DOM comes about as close as anyone here can to Kinkade's style. Run his stuff through Painter and people would probably think Kinkade painted it.   ;)

DOM1's art is better than Kinkade's work.  DOM1 has been following the style of the masters, such as Koekkoek.

Well I only had the one image to compare DOM's work to from this thread. The Church with all the violent images tacked onto it after the fact. Same sort of rustic homey image that DOM1 does.

I always felt Kinkade over commercialized himself.  I have 3 of his prints signed plus a couple of smaller prints but then I'm near his home area.  He seemed nice  the one time I met him but anyone can be pleasant for a few minutes.  I would imagine that any amount of fame and fortune would create a stress that I certainly couldn't fathom.  (love the Disney story though) He's just not unique any more.  Anyone with the ability to "paint light" is doing it, at least based on the last art auction I attended, and I met a woman who was peddling her versions of Kinkades work.  She had some close copies.

I was never really a fan, but he's got a lot of skill - in art and (I thought) in marketing.

No amount of skill or talent or super-intelligence can offset a man-child bad personality - if that article is to be believed.

And without Rockwell's social sensibilities in his later life. I can't imagine Kinkade painting "The Problem We All Live With" http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ed/The-problem-we-all-live-with-norman-rockwell.jpg
