"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.

Looks like I'm getting Syntheyes 2008 as a replacement for my orphaned copy of MatchMover HD 4.0. Now I can do camera tracking for modo.

Quote - I enjoy both 2D & 3D work but I must admit I do find 2D more relaxing...perhaps the reason i it's less technical? also 3D work seems less forgiving... It's much easier to cover up your mistakes in 2D... LOL...
I'm not good at figuring out where shading and shine should come into play when I'm 2D drawing so things coming out of Sculptris look much better than what I can do with a pencil but I do envy those that have the brains to be able to paint and draw 2D.
I have inkscape, GIMP, Paint .NET, Photo POS Pro and Project Dog Waffle all sitting on my desktop but I'd be hell bent to have the brains to make something good with them other than quick front and side sketches to load into Blender background for trace modeling.
I used to draw 2D all the time as a kid but my sketches never had light or shade or shadow or any sort of feel to them that gave them depth..
Anyone can learn to extrude, scale or rotate a 3D shape and memorize hot keys but it takes a certain inborn skill at eye/hand coordination, ingenuity and imagination to be able to old school draw and paint. =)
