The winner of the June Bryce Challenge - Orbital - has thrown down the guantlet with this for July.

"Next challenge will be called "Adventures of the Comfy Chair" Please build  a scene of anything you want, but it must include this model
http://archive3d.net/?a=download&id=32620
That way we have some continuity. So use your imagination and use Bryce as much as possible. Postwork is allowed as are other imports if you need them. After all we might as well be heretic on this challenge.
Anybody unfamiliar with the comfy chair reference needs to ask the Bryster!

**Sounds good to me.

****Good luck to you all. The Entry pages will be up shortly.

****The Deadline will be 12 NOON UK TIME July 31st 2010
**
Contestants are permitted only one (1) entry.

**WARNING!!!!!  Anyone posting finished renders in the galleries before the end of voting will be disqualified from this challenge.

WIPS are fine as long as they are only posted in this thread.

I have a question about the model chosen. When you import it into Bryce, the material zone are screwed up! The wooden legs material zone are melded into another chair area material zone such that if you try to add the leg wood material, the result is not a good one but rather a patch work effect. It doesn't look right, see above.

Anybody got a solution to this problem? (I thought I would take it through 3D Max and re-work the mat zone but it's big in polys to export back out)

Great idea but Mac users above Bryce 5.0.1 can't load .3ds files (bug). Don't see any restrictions about conversion though... I wonder if that would be OK? to publicly post it in another format?
Edit - nope, just found this when I went to the DL page:
"Single reselling or redistribution of this model is prohibited."

The entry link works just fine.
You can also go through the green 'Challenge Page' link at the top of this page.

If you're having a problem with this download I suggest the you make/build a similar chair in Bryce or import a like object from another source. I won't disqualify any entry for not using this particular model provided the replacement is more or less the same design.

If you can convert this one through another (heretical) app, feel free. Just don't scream too loud when I make you sit in it. ;-)

Cool challenge and many thanks to orbital for the huge model archive link...what a gold mine.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

If that's OK with you and Joe to substitute a different comfy chair that would be excellent!

Joe's on holiday and I'm in charge - so no change there then. ;-)

Dan, just so long as it looks like Joe's chair..

Would this one be more acceptable? http://www.sharecg.com/v/22735/3D-Model/armchair-collection-7a... If you download it, be prepare to spend some time tweaking it... Bryce  import is horrible!

I get the same error when trying to use the challenge link, Challenge Page link and can't see it on the Open Contests page.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/contest/index.php?contest_id=1163 - You do not have permission to do this.

Is it working for anyone?

P.S. I am able to access last months Entry Page so I guess its not my account that is the problem.

Huge apologies, Guys! I'm sorry. I hadn't actually 'Opened' the challenge. It was still in 'pending'.
You should be able to get in there now.

I forgot how addicting it was to work with Bryce (been about 10 years since last I used it). Stayed up (very, very) late last night tweaking textures onto a single mesh chair. It's amazing the varying results you can get even when working with just a single mesh object.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Wed, 07 July 2010 at 4:55 PM

I hate that 3DS files like that don't maintain prper material zones on import to Bryce Poser or Carrara! I mean come on people! How long has that format been around huh?

ugotaccpaced ( ) posted Fri, 09 July 2010 at 10:51 AM

WIP sample images. The chair model  is all one mesh so my options are limited but I think I'm liking the results. I need to work more on the rest of the scene. I think the windows need to be larger.

orbital ( ) posted Sun, 11 July 2010 at 2:34 AM

Sorry I was a bit rushed when I posted the model link and didn't have time to try it out before hand. If you have problems with it, use something similar.

Is there a prize for these challenges? I won't win it, I am nub.

ThunderStone ( ) posted Thu, 15 July 2010 at 6:17 AM

No real prize except the knowledge that you did your best and tried to expand your skill set with Bryce. This is a challenge, not a contest.

Just started this week end - should have something done before the deadline.
But July and December traditionally are the 2 slowest months for challenges.

Well, I saw the entry page was still open earlier today, so I started on an entry to play with Bryce 7 (huzzahs for Daz) and then I saw that voting was already on. Next challenge I suppose....

AeroJett ( ) posted Tue, 03 August 2010 at 3:13 PM

I went ahead and finished my would-be entry and loaded it to my gallery if anyone is interested.
