"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
Um, mine does, but it takes a bit of fiddling. I've graduated to Photoshop CS3 now, but I drew eyebrows in the GIMP with my Wacom Bamboo. The trick is to launch the GIMP using your tablet... not the mouse.
Do you have a link? Which version is this?

Really, what version of GIMP are you ya'll using that doesn't support tablets???
I'm stuck with 2.2 but I've never had any issues with it not supporting my tablet. I constantly switch back and forth between my tablet and my system mouse for different tools while using it. The only thing GIMP2.2 doesn't do is recognize my pens as different, no matter what I try, it never sees them as different stylus and treats them as the same pen..

Having probs with tablet since 2.6.8It won't save my options for my Genius tablet and I've heard some complaints about GIMP and Bamboo.
The most I've been able to do with my Genius tablet is scribble all the way to the left of the new file no matter where, on the canvas, my pen is positioned.
Aside from starting GIMP with the pen tablet, are there any more tricks to get it to function?
Quote - 'Purchase photoshop' What sort of answer is that?
A smart-ass one... you get that. Thankfully, not too often on these forums: people usually go out of their way to be helpful.
Believe me, I've been on forums where "help" consisted of insults, smart-ass remarks of the above sort, or expressions of incredulity that their dream product should have a problem, such as crashing (which is what I went to the forum to get help for in the first place) randomly and at the worst possible times.
I'm a strange sort: I judge a product by its community. I would Never recommend a product where the Centre of the community approaches calls for help with "yeah, we've heard some people might have a problem with this... so?"
Oh, and thanks for the link, MC...

It's the response another guy got (I was reading a forum) who supposedly had contacted technical support about this issue.
I mean, to some logic, if someone was serious about photo manipulation they would want to save up for PS, where no problems exist, but It's not the kind of response you're expecting from a customer service agent.
Quote - That sucks. So tablets worked fine prior to 2.6.8 then? I wonder what they did that broke the compatibility and when they'll get to fixing it.
There have been complaints about Bamboo but as Robyn has pointed out there are a number of ways to work around the Bamboo issue and get it running.
Genius is now odd man out. But Genius works great for everything else that isn't GIMP or Inkscape so I'm not going to complain.
With the Wacom tablets at least, there should be a tablet settings interface available after the drivers are installed. Set it to not use "mouse mode" and you may have to fiddle around with area scaling. (It's been a while, so I may be spotty on recalling things.) You don't want mouse mode, because it'll remember the cursor position and pick up from there instead of using the relative position on the tablet. Also if you have Vista or Win7 you may need to disable that gestures thingy. (I found it annoying and gets in the way more than it helps in regards to graphics software. It may be handy for taking notes on a tablet PC, but that's about it.)
The tablet should work with any graphics software once setup like that. The only problem I found is that in some cases software doesn't support pressure sensitivity or is able to tell the "eraser" end from the "nib" end.
I wouldn't be too surprised if there's a config file somewhere to fine tune things with GIMP, but then you'll have to get answers from the GIMP developers and more experienced users.

There might be something worth downloading.
I don't update if the update makes a program worse. Like Vue or Hexagon.

Pauljs75's comment reminds me, there are some options in GIMP to fiddle with. In the preferences under "input devices" there should be a button for "configure extended input devices" when you click on that, it'll open a few options, once of which is "modes" for your pen, like "screen" and "window" its possible you may be able to play with the stuff in there to get your tablet working better.
I've had issues with pasting from clipboard before, it seems like sometimes it won't paste if what you copied to the clipboard was copied before GIMP was launched, yet other times, it works just fine, so...who knows. If it becomes too much of an issue, you can try GIMP's screen capture function, that should [one would think] be more reliable [its in the "file" ---> "acquire" menu].

But it still doesn't support pen tablets. =L
