Subject: OT: Should quit Job if you're SLOW(mentally)?

If you look normal from the outside but you know yourself and you're really slow mentally.
Should you quit your job if they want to change it into phone/talking job?

You guys would say "keep it and just do it" but I have speaking disabitlity. the boss just thinks i'm being quiet but the reason i'm quiet is cause i can't speak. my brain is stuck.

Well she's thinking that i'm trainable. but I'm not.

I've been with them for almost one year doing data entry and helping with admin support and they're needing more people to do phone work. But i'm not a phone person/not a speaking person and never been and i don't have any experience talking and arguing. that's what they do in the phone... talk alot and deal with people who argue.

Recently they changed one guy that w as doing the job i'm doing.. from that, into a phone operator. But he's good at speaking. He's not a mute guy like i am. So his transition was easy.

I'm kind of mentally retarded but I don't seem like it from the outside.. People think i'm normal but i'm not.

Should i quit before they start making me a phone operator..

And it's stupid.. I haven't even shown signs of being a talker. I never talk at work. People look at me as weird..and whenever I talk to the boss about how my work is going... i always get stuck and stutter and i sound stupid.. This boss is just desperate cause one of her girls is gonna leave to do other job somewhere else and she doesn't want to go through the trouble of looking for a new person.

What to do?

they can't fire you under the A.D.A. in L.A. if a doctor has diagnosed you with a speech impediment.
I ain't a lawyer.  just tell her a doctor has diagnosed you (if true) with a speech impediment, hence
you would be a bad candidate for the new job.  if no diagnosis, get one ASAP.

If you was able to write this and all the post you are not a retard.
Beware of psychologists, who are retard are they.
You first at all must discover what you are. You can be quiet, don't like to talk and so, what's the problem? people are different, people love sport and I hate sports.
Discover your capabilities, skills, your potential and also your limitations and how to overcome it, nobody is perfect. But as said before, beware shrinks and use your brain and common sense.

Stupidity also evolves!

You should be able to express your concerns with your boss. You should  have a  little more confidence in at least trying new tasks, unless of course you have tried and failed at them before. You might just be socially shy and your lack of confidence is affecting your performance.

Someone on phone support should not be arguing with a customer.

If you have a genuine speech impediment I suggest getting it documented so you have protection under the various disability provisions.

Dont quit over this issue. Express your concerns, point out that you do well at your current job, and try to do whatever is asked. Try to relax.

You might start to look for another job. You will either find something good , or convince yourself to keep what you have.

I say check the laws in your state and don't quit.  There are both physical and psychological causes for being unable to speak and if you are diagnosed with one, you do have some legal protections.

No but i mean, Winterclaw.. If i know i can't do that job.. because i'm  not a talker. and they don't have any jobs for nontalkers.. then should i just quit and stop wasting my time and theirs?

If you have a diagnosed condition that prevents you from talking, in the way someone without your condition can, then it's unreasonable for them to just assume you can be trained to do a job that involves lots of talking.

Personally I'd write your boss a letter explaining everything, although she should already know the details anyway, then it's up to her to find someone to fit that job & keep you doing the job they've been happy with for the last year.

Don't go over the top in your letter, if you decide to write one of course, just stick mainly to the facts, perhaps put in a little about how upset it's making you thinking they might want to get rid of you & that you've been happy doing the job you've done so far & due to your condition you wouldn't be able to do the phone talking job to their satisfaction.

Whatever you do don't quit, unless they're absolutely going to force you to do the phone job & nothing you say will persuade them you can't do it.

Don't ever voluntarily leave a job without having another job to go to. If you do that you forfeit your rights to claim unemployment insurance.

Go to the doctor and get a letter from indicating the degree of your disability and speech impediment.

Write a letter to your manager and include a photocopy of the letter from your doctor.  Explain to her that you enjoy your job, but you are concerned that they are going to push you into an area of work that you are neither comfortable doing, but also are incapable of doing according to your doctor.

There are laws against firing people for a physical/mental disability.  They should be able to find you work within the company that is within your ability.

And if not, they will lay you off, which would entitle you to claim unemployment benefits.

But don't quit!!!!!!!  Don't quit!!!!!!

Also if you write a letter or get a letter from your doctor be sure to keep a copy for yourself. Always write down dates and what is said in meetings. Keep a little notebook so you can remember clearly what happened. Use this if you speak to your boss on the phone as well. As said before, don't quit. If she fires you you should be able to get unemployment and you may have a case against her. Don't get angry in your letter, just state the facts and let her know you are happy with the job you are doing. Saib it's always easy to tell someone to just quit but in these times jobs are hard to find if not impossible. I'm sure starving on the side of the road would make him a lot less happy.

Some people want to constantly move up, and others are quite happy where they are, doing their current job.  Both types are valuable but have different career development needs.

You could try explaining to your supervisor that you enjoy the work you do and feel you can contribute more in that capacity than in another role (with customer interaction).

You are probably limiting your promotion potential, but if you want to stay where you are, there was obviously a need that you were hired to fill, presumably that need remains.  Are there other (non talking) tasks you could offer to take on to enhance your current role?

At the end of the day, if it is clear that the only job available to you will be one you are not suited for and which will lead to stress and unhappiness - then I think you've answered your own question.  Tactically speaking, it is always better to seek a new job while still employed.

I agree. Honesty really works for the most part. Really, never quit a job unless you really want to.

I suggest you write a short clear note for your boss saying that you are happy with the work you are doing and that you would like to stay at that type of work but that you simply can not do telephone work for personal reasons. You don't have to explain the reasons why, simply tell her how you feel about it... that you can not do a good job talking to people on the phone regardless of any training that they have offered.

Ask your boss for a brief private meeting and in that meeting you can just ask her to please read the note you have prepared.

Over the years I have often typed notes to people at work and then sat down with them in their office while they read the note with me present. They have understood that I have done this to put my thoughts in order and that I am being respectful by presenting them with the note in person. When I am first doing this with someone new sometimes I have said, "Please read this note. I have written it to set my thoughts down clearly."

At the middle management level at which I worked in several institutions in the US it was common practice to prepare a memo or report and then present it in person to the supervising upper management administrator both as a courtesy and in order to be there to answer any questions. If they had no questions they would just say "thank you" and if they did have questions I would answer as briefly as possible. That was the nature of the hierarchy.

As for your boss, I think reasonable people for the most part respect straightforwardness and honesty. I think it is far more likely than not she will keep you with your present work if she is able to do so. She should appreciate that you have been honest in communicating that you do not feel you could do an adequate job at any phone work despite any proposed training.

well i have an example of why i Shouldn't do customer service.
A guy who was doing the same clerical work that I do.. recently (1 week ago) was changed to do phone work.. He is talkative and a good speaker but he is kinda slow too.
WEll, today he made a little mistake and messed up something with an important client of the company, and so he had a little meeting with the boss who called him up and
guess what?, they fired him. Fire him today because he wasn't good.

Well they didn't fire him from the company but they fired him from the customer service job and told him to go back to the clerical work that I do also.

So that's the end for him in customer service.

Remembering your post from a few weeks back and reading this, the best thing I can suggest is to tell your boss straight out you ain't right for the job.  You can always point out the other guy's mistake and tell the boss you wouldn't want to be responsible for anything similar.

As for being slow and/or retarded, you ain't.  You're articulate enough with a keyboard.  Not everyone finds it easy to converse so don't be hard on yourself.
