Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 24 6:22 pm)
Not sure what you mean here (and although I've made some interiors, it's not what I do most, so it's not that I feel slighted L)
But.. are you saying that things shouldn't cast shadows? because I would disagree with you. If a wall casts shadows in a room only lit from the inside.. it's because it is NOT only lit from the inside but also from the outside. And then of course it'll look wrong, but the problem isn't the model but the lights used.
Or did I totally misunderstand what you said? :) Might well be :)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
Wall shadows are complicated. If the room is purely rectangular, and you're going
to shoot purely from inside, then the walls should have shadows turned off
for speed. But if the room is L-shaped or has any inward-projecting corners,
then you need to have shadows from those walls for realism.
One thing for sure: floors and terrains with displacement surfaces should
never have shadows on.
The renderer will try to cast shadows from every thread on the carpet or every
blade of grass, taking lots of unnecessary time.

I'm trying to think of a situation where I would even want the light shining from outside to go completely thru the walls and ceiling... Thru a window, yes. But then the wall needs to cast shadows ;o). Using an infinite light to light a room isn't the correct way to do it if that's what you're getting at. For that, you need spotlights or point lights placed inside the room.

Using infinite lighting then is out of the question or, once again, you have to kill the shadows manually.
O.o
Infinite lights for an interior? There's your problem, right away.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
Think of Poser lighting like you would real lighting. While the sunlight may enter the room thru a window or door, the sun itself is outside and the walls and ceiling are definitely blocking the sunlight (in other words, casting shadows). Inside the house you have ceiling lights and lamps for which you would use spot lights or point lights and on those, the light is not infinite. It falls off after so many feet... That's the reason when, should the lights be on inside and it's dark outside, you get bright light near the sources (lamps, etc.) but there are darker areas in the room's corners and recesses and other things in the room cast shadows from those sources.

They do cast shadows in real life, depending on how you light them. I'm looking up to the ceiling at the moment and I see shadows from the ceiling cast onto the wall and some objects close by, since certain lights in my living room cause this effect.
Having said that, the infinite light shining outside is off at the moment :-) But even when it's on, it sure doesn't shine through my walls, like in Poser. If you do interior scenes, you really have to pay attention to how you light your scene.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(
Food for thought.....

There can be several things that I find annoying in the vast majority of Poser products. I mean, the kind of little things which can have you spoil time on problems that should not exist.
There's the issue of the "most of female standing poses are set for high heels", and then... there is the issue of "everything's got a shadow".
Now don't take it the wrong way, people, but honestly...
Let's imagine I am standing in a simple, cubic room. There's a chair, a couch, a TV maybe and a poster on a wall. Does the poster have to have a shadow on the opposite wall? Does the floor have to project a shadow thanks to the only lightbulb hanging from the ceiling? A lightbulb that's inside the room? Do the WALLS of a room project shadows when the only light source is inside the room?
I see tons of products coming out with that problem. If the product is a composite scene with lots of tiny props, deco items on the walls, etc, going through every item that can't project a shadow can be very tedious.
Merchants, O our merchants. I love your stuff. I buy even when I'm broke, sometimes, despite not being very wealthy ( Ok, not wealthy at all) but could you pay a little bit more attention to the shadows-that-should-not-be-there? The only case when we would want to see them is when rendering some Dr Who themed picture. I'm sure someone will get that one :D
Thank you for your kind attention. Bow
