Subject: What's the latest word on Poser to Maya conversion?

Here it is short and sweet. I've got a character in Poser Pro that a friend wants converted over to something that Maya can read. The clincher is it needs to keep all the texture maps. All I've got is Max 3, and Poser Pro what do I need to do to make sure the UV mapping is preserved upon conversion. Hey thanks to anyone who spends a sec to read this.

Maya is still a problem. I've asked for a plug-in, too. You can export .obj files from Poser. If the .mtl file is in the same folder as the .obj it is supposed to be translatable to Maya. At Siggraph a couple of years ago, Vicki was shown in Maya... so it is possible. I tried taking a couple of samples through 3DExploration (license was about $100) and converting to .xsi format, which I think is something Maya can read. PolyTrans is a better tool, but i didn't have the money for it. They have experience with Maya (we exchanged emails) and ought to know what formats will convert cleanly. Good luck! If you do discover a working method, please let me know! Carolly

Pro Pack/Maya plug-in? It's on our long term road map, but there are few things in front of it for now... Steve Cooper

Steve, we missed each other at the Game Developer Conference. (I kept hitting your booth as well as DAZ's.) Someday we'll meet. hmmm... We are planning a Bay Area Poser party... :) Anyway, Maya is a fantastic program, but it doesn't seem very compatible with anything else. As Poser becomes a more high-end tool (at least with the Pro Pack development) I hope there will be some convergence. As it is, Poser is progressing faster than Maya. I've been astonished at the leaps in excellence over just the past 6 months. Better hair and better joints are only part of the improvements to Poser. You probably saw the new nVidia card at the GDC... 30K polys and smooth? We might be able to get some quality characters into games! Carolly

Thank you very much Mr. Cooper and Carolly. My people are going to continue to test till the weekend to see if we can find a solution. Hopefully there is a simple way to preserve texture maps.

hauksdottir, Are you attending Siggraph? We're throwing a party with Rhythm & Hues (Cats & Dogs, Babe, Planet of the Apes- there's a theme for ya) on Monday the 13th and having a gallery exhibit with press of community artwork on Wednesday in our booth- 713 I'm open to a SF party, we can probably drag a few Curious Lab rats along and show some of the latest work... Steve, I won't make it to Siggraph, unfortunately. Just did Origins last month, and have to watch pennies. I'm in Emeryville, which is more centrally-located. Kate is in Richmond, and has a backyard with 2 grills. We'll probably meet at Kate's first, since BBQ is a nice ice-breaking activity. I suspect that a peek at your latest work would bring a few more of the lurkers out of the woodwork! Carolly
