Subject: Poser 8 stopped working after sr3

I bought Poser 8 last week when it was on sale. I installed it and it worked fine. Then I installed sr3 and now the library palate won't load. I thought these updates were supposed to make the software work better, not kill it. What's up with that? Do I need to uninstall and re-install without sr3?

Oh yes, the PC starts ticking like a bomb (seems to be searching for something that's not there).

You need to tell us more:

Mac / PC ?
OS ?

If on Windows 7 or Vista, is it the 32-bit or 64-bit version (of the OS)?

If Windows 7 or Vista, is Poser installed under C:Program FilesSmithMicro ?

Post that info here and maybe someone can help.

It seems to be trying to connect to Content Paradise but ha ha, there's no internet connection on this particular machine. How do I tell the software to "forget it, it ain't gonna happen"?

I'm using a Dell Precision T7500 running XP Professional. Poser 8 is sitting right where it's supposed to be, under C:Program FilesSmithMicro.

There is no internet connect to this machine. It is isolated and stands alone. (like me)

But Poser 8 must talk to your local host, even if that is just you and that machine ;o).The internet doesn't even enter into it.

If you have Windows Firewall on your machine, that's probably what's blocking it. Open that up and let Poser through.

Just for fun, check to see if the Windows Firewall is ON or OFF. If it's on, turn it OFF, and try running Poser. If that sorts your problem out, and your PC has no internet connection, it's safe to leave the Firewall turned OFF.

Let us know what happens...

The error message clearly says it wants to talk to Content Paradise. If this is a one time connection to verify registration or something, fine, I can connect it up for a few minutes to take care of business. I don't need this thing talking to it's mommy every time I start it up. I had that problem with my ex. It ain't gonna happen.

Now go into your prefs, and if the option "Check for Updates on Launch" is enabled, disable it.

Eventually it times out, the pane goes white and I get an IE message saying "Page not found"

The only other thing I can tell you is to make sure Flash is updated. The Poser 8 library makes use of Flash.

The program obviously wants something from Content Paradise. The question is what does it want, why does it want it, and what happens if it doesn't get it.
What happens if I uninstall Poser and re-install without the SR3. It seemed to work fine before I installed the blasted thing.

That is your prerogative, of course :o).

There are things in SR3 you might like though, such as an improved Library and scaling changes...

If the search facility here was any good I'd dig out one or more threads that deal with this issue with contributions from bagginsbill, who 'did' the library.

Before going down the re-install route, make sure that Adobe Flash and Internet Explorer are up to date. Nothing to do with accessing the internet, but Poser 8 uses some of IE's bits and pieces, plus Flash, to communicate with the library.

If that doesn't fix the problem, a re-install may be your best option.

All that junk is up-to-date. I don't think they have anything to do with this particular problem. P8 is pitching a fit because it wants to talk to Content Paradise. That is not going to happen. Period.

This is just my personal preference, but if a software is going to refuse to run unless it can get online and talk to whomever about whatever, it can bark at the moon for all it matters. I don't need it.

Building a piece of software that relies on bits and pieces of third-party software that may or may not be available and then forcing users to be connected to the web in order for that software to work does not strike me a a viable business plan.
But I guess I'm just old fashioned, expecting something to work right out of the box, so to speak.

Ah. I did the re-install without the SR3 and everything is working fine again. I'm a happy chapee.

Maybe it's time to move to Daz Studio.

Or you just contact the support of the company that sells the product rather than rely on 3rd party support from a forum full of people who try to diagnose a problem like Dr. House without knowing the right questions to ask? ;-)

Don't forget that you're in a tiny minority - most of the thousands of Poser users have had no problems.

Here is the useless answer I got from Smith Micro:

*Hello Harry,

That error message is popping up because of the lack of an internet connection.  Simply click on the OK to close out of that error message.

You won't be able to use Content Paradise within Poser because you don't have an internet connection on that computer, but that wouldn't affect the rest of the Poser program so there's nothing to worry about there.

Be aware, the software is not calling home, it is establishing an internet protocol for the library to function correctly which you are denying.  There is no exchange of information nor is it actually connecting to Content Paradise. As long as Adobe Flash from the installation disk is current and IE is current, you should have no problems.  It is your perogative to chose which SR you would like to stick with in P8, but you will miss out on some of the new very convenient features introduced with this update.

I didn't notice a disclaimer in any of the literature about the program needing an internet connection to function properly. Had that been mentioned, I probably would not have bothered to buy it.

I don't think I'll miss the "new and improved" features since I haven't actually used the program yet and the "new and improved" features don't allow me to use the program at all.

That's why you should continue your dialog with support. Because people here have no or outdated knowledge. Poser can search Content Paradise in addition to the local files with SR3 and for that tries to get search parameters from the internet.

But this error is as I said irritating and irrelevant, the next one is more relevant, but tell support about it.

I sent them a copy of the error message. Upon further investigation on their part, they had no clue.
Their final answer was, just use Poser without the SR3. Well, I'd already come to that conclusion myself. From my experience over the years, tech support is as useful as tits on a boar. TS is kind of like techie welfare.

I've gotten a similar error on my laptop when I'm not connected to the internet. There is a button on that screen  to click and the Library then functions normally.

I've gone back to using Poser 7 exclusively.  I tried every suggested thing in a bunch of forums here and on other sites, but could never get the library to work at all.  I started using the Semidieu Library Manager and that worked fine for me for a long time.  For the past few months, though, every time I try to use Poser 8 at all, as soon as I start loading things into a scene the system abruptly closes down completely.

They fixed that problem. The button is now greyed out.

I verified that it is the same message on my laptop.  If I click on the 'OK' button, the message goes away and it works.

Crosspost:  The button s on odd colour, but it works.  If clicking it doesn't work, perhaps it is an issue with the version of Flash installed.  Mine appears to be Flash 10d

The contentparadise error will of course always appear when there's no connection to the internet or to contentparadise possible... ;-)

It'd be more interesting to see a screenshot of the problem (when all error messages are clicked away).
Are all firewalls off?
What happens with SR3 installed, if you open "Poser 8RuntimeuiFlexLSMGUIbin-releaseLSMGUI.html".
What does the "netstat -b" command print to the command line when run at that time?
Does changing the ports in both the poser.ini and LSMGUI.html help (search for 11530, change to another value like 21098).

Everything on my PC is up to date. The button was non-functional. It's a mute point anyway since I just re-installed P8 without the SR3 and it works fine.

I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions on how to fix my P8 problem. Despite what some have said, I get more useful information here from people who actually use the software than from various product tech support people who have probably never even seen the products GUI.
Who knows better how something works than the people who actually use it?
