While listening to Coast to Coast AM (formerly Art Bell's show), James Cameron was a guest a few nights ago. He said there will be a second movie in "about three to four years". Woot!

he also mentioned that there was a very cool, large hunt sequence that was cut from the movie for the sake of keeping it from being too long.  : (

When will a Director's Cut version of the movie be released (I'm hoping that will sequence will be put back in)??

As a 3D experience, I liked Beowulf better.

It was always called Coast to Coast AM, the hosts just changed.  I think Art still guest hosts every now and then from the phillipeans.

BTW, I'm the opposite of an avatar fan so what's his face can get lost for all I care.

Oh god, not me. Even though I liked it, Beowulf looked less real than Avatar IMO

Looking forward to the re-release of Avatar and the re-release of the DVD in Nov with 16 minutes extra footage as opposed to only the 8+ in the theater version.

As excited as I am about Avatar 2 and the third one (going to be a trilogy) it's still a ways away and anything can happen, especially since Sam W has quite a few projects on his plate right now.

I thought the fully CGI scenes worked very well with the 3D, but the scenes with the live actors looked distorted. I thought Beowulf, being all CGI, was more consistent. I don't think Beowulf went for a full realism effect either. Kinda 80% real, 20% Shrek like look.

I can't say I'm looking forward to a second Avatar, I haven't even watched the first yet, my son has a copy in his room & I just can't be bothered watching Pocahontus in space.

How long can it take to make a 15 minute movie (including the credits)?
Here's a plot summary of Avatar2 (spoilers ahead!):

The Marines return with a second battalion and carpet-bomb Pandora into a smoldering cinder.

The end.

I love animation of all sorts, whether it's cutting edge CG or the traditional hand drawn style, but Avatar left me cold. No matter how talented the artists might be, if they don't have a good story to tell, their efforts will fall flat.

That seems to me to be Avatar's great shortcoming. The plot was just another dose of the sort of hackneyed social commentary that seems to dominate so much art theses days. The human characters were grossly simplistic stereotypes, out to rape mother nature and commit genocide against a superior species without a trace of remorse.
Okay, I get it already. Perhaps one human in a million deserves to live, while the rest of us murderous slobs deserve death,  preferably a slow one with lots of suffering.

Beowulf's characters and story were much more compelling, which made it far superior to Avatar in spite of its less polished look.

Yes, the story line was pretty thin (Unobtainium?!?). But the manner in which it was told was simply stunning. I'd give almost anything to have a small part in the sequels, but the chance of that is less than that of Hell freezing over.

I didn't think the movie was THAT horrible, but it can certainly be made WORSE by adding a sequel.

Winterclaw ( ) posted Thu, 26 August 2010 at 4:01 PM

About the story, TMQ pointed out two interesting things:
1.  There was a canyon full of the stuff ripe for the taking.
2.  There's something called horizontal drilling, which allows to mine under something without destroying it.

Ergo: James Cameron stinks.

I really liked the Avatar movie - definitely looking forward to the sequel which is supposed to have an ocean theme.  I imagine it could be as good as The Abyss , if not better...

I heard it was going to be made using only Poser 10.  Not the pro version either.

I liked Avatar, a lot. In fact it is one of my favorite movies at the moment.

Those of you who don't like it can go ahead and not like it. That carpet bomb thing ain't gonna happen so you might as well just forget that idea. If the movie bothers you so much just ignore it and don't post in threads about it. I hate politics and I don't search out threads about politics and say I hate it and all politicians should be carpet bombed... (even if some maybe should)

Ooo Pocahontas in space, yeah it is a recycled plot, big deal it has been used before. You think that is the only plot ever reused by someone in Hollywood?

Now excuse while I go find out when I can go see the expanded version  at the local theater

Now, now, its just a movie. No need to flame on either side. Its O.K. if some didn't like it. Not every movie will appeal to everyone, and that's to be expected. Its just part of individual tastes.

If some people want to read this thread and say they didn't like the movie, that's fine with me. I understand. I just know that when the sequels are released, I'll buy a ticket and see them. Its a form of entertainment.

I know that I, and many others, will enjoy them.  : )
