Is it possible to do 3D text in Poser, would like to try and create a fancy 3D animated title maybe...

Thanks,

Vanz

You can try Elefont. It was recommended in the following thread:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?message_id=3499826

I wasn't able to get it to work very well. I had all kinds of choppy/spikey edges, not smooth rounded.  But give it a try. Others seem to be able to get it working better than I did.

You're not doing anything wrong, Acadia;  Elefont does produce "icicle" artifacts, especially if using the fancy bevel types.  It also leaves an array of loose vertices around each letter, apparently marking kerning limits.

Also, Vanzagar, be aware that Elefont's output is .dxf format, which Poser sometimes has trouble importing.

I import the .dxf into the modeler Silo, fix the geometry quirks, then export the repaired version as an .obj for import into Poser.

If you don't have a modeler, then just import the .dxf into Poser, enter the (advanced) material room, and use the grouping tool to select the offending "icicle" polygons and assign them to some new group.  Now select all poly groups except the icicle, and create a new prop of that selection.  The new prop won't have the icicles.  However, you may find that removing the icicles left noticeable holes.

Wings has the ability to convert fonts into 3D models and it's a full featured, free modeller, too.

While we're on the subject, I have a problem specific to this...

There's a particular font I want to make into 3D objects and so far I've had no luck with it.  It's called "Batman Forever" but for some reason, Wings doesn't like the name or whatever name the system cares to display.

Any advice?

Is this it?

Elefont didn't have any problem with it - I used the large 45' bevel option.

Both the filled and the outline variants are TrueTypeFonts;  some apps specify only TTF.  I have more than once snuck an OTF (OpenTypeFont) past Elefont successfully, though.

Yep, that's the one.  Wings don't like it, for some reason.

I use Carrara for my 3D fonts because of all it's nifty beveling choices. Wasn't Carrara 7 Pro just offered for free with 3D World magazine or some such offer?

I wonder if it's the space in the fontname. Maybe make a copy and rename it with no spaces, Sam?

I've done Wings 3d lettering, but often find I need to smooth it.Er suppi 'works!'...;)

Hi pak,

Tried that ... didn't seem to make any difference.
Interesting though.
Font DOES show up and can be used in PSP and Carrara.  ???

P.S.  Looking at the file properties notes that ...
File Edittability: Restricted <=== maybe this has something to do with the problem ???

And ........... a close up view of the "... Outline" font.

Could it be that Wings checks the geometry and says "Uh uh, not gonna work."

And the plot sickens ... 😄

Nice one, Doc.  It wasn't the outline font I wanted to use, just the standard one.  The problem is, Wings can't even find it on my system.  It's installed but for some reason, Wings can't find it.

I'm using Windows XP, which seems to truncate some of the font filenames to things like Batma~ and other such useful stuff.

My Wings can't find it either ... if you try to use the "Browse" function ... BUT ...................................... I don't know why ... but ... if you **type in the Font name** (complete path), it seems to work.

BUT ...... for some strange reason, the letter "B" in the "... Alternate" font auses a problem.
Solution to this problem will be posted next ...
Stay tuned ... ;=]

The letter "B" works if I change the edge bisections from "0" to "1"

I tried typing in the font name and it didn't work for me.  Boo hoo.

I need to install the new version of Wings; maybe I'll have better luck with that.

Paul,

Yup, couldn't hurt ... Did you type in the complete path?

e.g.,"c:/Windows/Fonts/BatmanForeverAlternate" <=== (on my 'puter)

Spelling errors? ... Just a thought.

FYI - I am using Wings 1.2 (maybe not the latest)?

Hi Doc.  I typed in the full path and name and - as you know - I never make speeling erorrs.  ;)

The good news is, your method works perfectly in the new version of Wings. Yay!

Many thanks for your help.  👍
