Subject: OT- Did you folks know that the cost of premium rat meat has doubled?

Hi folks, while I was in the bathroom and reading Uncle Johns' UNSTOPPABLE Bathroom Reader 16th Edition page 62  I came across an article on curried rat meat and decided to Google "Price of quality rat meat".  I didn't realize that the price of quality rat meat has doubled to $1.50 per kilo for free range rat nor that there are over 68,000 websites devoted to this yummie for the tummy.

One can even go to ratbeef.com and get yours delivered to your home carefully packaged for long lasting loveliness.  Some folks state that it tastes like free range yak or gorilla or a combination of both.  That website has photos of that lovingly prepared free range rodent.

No I did not know that, or that it was available for purchase on the interweb.  Whether customs would let it in the country is another matter.

The question I ask though is this, how doess anyone know it tastes like Free Range Gorilla?  And is there any other kind of Gorilla (zoos excepted).  Is somone somewhere farming them?

Farming Gorillas, yep and the proper method of preparing one is to club one over the head after wrestling him to the ground.  Unfortunately its very difficult to hire good gorilla wranglers -- very few survive the aptitude test.  Jan

Homeless people in my town have been advised not to eat rats that they catch as they're likely to be poisoned.

In Belgium they call it a water rabbit. (waterkonijn) but that's even less gros then "roof hare"  (dakhaas) which is a dutch nickname for a cat, a relic from ww2.
My own roof hare caught a water rabbit some weeks ago, I'm glad he did because they are a pest around our house, perhaps I should catch them and sell them.

According to C. S. Forester, the author of the Hornblower series, they were a staple on long sea voyages.  It was said that the best tasting ones were those allowed to run free in the bread locker.

if it's only $1.50/kg .... hmmm... but if it's curried, then only humans would eat it IMVHO.
no doubt very popular with scousers, but could one feed it to one's pet animals?

I remember reading about a Beijing resteraunt "Better than Deer" specializing in rat. They had their own farm where they raised grain-fed rats. I don't think that I would have a problem eating rat, but suspect that, like rabbit, it isn't something that I would particularly care for. Pigeon, on the other hand, I found delicious. (Albeit a bit scary -- I didn't realize that they shipped them with the heads still on.)
