Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 1:43 pm)
One thing I'd really like is a hierarchy-type expandable dropdown for like body-parts of a figure... I hate having to scroll all the way down beyond what my monitor allows in dropdown length in order to get to feet and toes. Or, barring that, a better, more consistent body-part selection in the preview pane of the pose room.
Dials that don't overshoot when you spin them - like when you've finished dialing, mine sometimes keep moving on and on into the next week.
On the Parameter dials Window, the ability to select the figure or prop would be nice. I know: not huge, but it would be nice.
In the material room, I think anything that Bagginsbill has on his wishlist works for me... his imagination and insights are infinitely better researched and informed than mine.
And I've already made suggestions on another thread as to how the tutorials could be revamped.

I'd like to be able to click on a body part and drag it using the translate tools without it selecting the ground during the drag or some other thing.

You can doo that now ...
Try this ...
Just select the GROUND and then ...
Use the "Object" [menu] to "Lock Actor" and now you can't select the GROUND by accident.

hi, that will help but I seem to think other things start to move and get selected too. the ground was just one example of the most common thing.
But that will be very helpful!!!

I'd like to be able to select objects and props from the dials pallet too. Also, a Max like gizmo for doing translate and rotate.

Why not just... well... press shift? It'll prevent changing the selection from the currently picked actor... It even works if you press shift before clicking anywhere in the view port again...
I really, really hope that BB continues the good work with the Library. And I hope that SM let him loose on the Material Room to develop a more powerful, yet simpler to use method of putting nodes and shaders together. Maybe also expose some more of the Firefly engine's functions: it would be great if true Sub-Surface Scattering was possible, and caustics too.
Another huge boon would be to have a listing - in the library - of all textures and geometries associated with a character or prop. Each image file on the list would be clickable, opening the file in an image editing app (set in preferences?).
And how about having a section for Poser scenes (pz3) in the Library, along with a little preview?
As I'm currently considering how to re-organise my runtimes, some way of being able to move a character or prop from one runtime to another, with the option to move the relevant textures and obj files to the same runtime, preferably keeping the same folder structure, would be great. If something that does this already exists please let me know!

When I am working with magnets, which I do very often, I like to scroll between base, magnet and zone by using the up and down arrow keys. As long as the Magnet is on Figure one, no problem...but if a magnet is on figure 2 or somewhere else, you cannot scroll this way. Why not??? Utterly, uselessly frustrating.
Automate Dynamic Clothing. We ought to have enough computing power to add a piece of clothing from the library and just let Poser figure it out without us having to set up zero-pose frames and all that. Further, Real-Time tweaking of the parameters. Easier methods to create different zones for cloth behavior. Basically, get the dress on hassle free and then modify in real time. Fine detail tweaking last and make it easier.
Buy out "Morphing Clothes" algorhythms and have every single piece of conforming clothing temporarily adopt whatever morphs are in use on the figure it's conforming to. Have a menu option to update the morphs if the user makes changes to the clothed figure.
Make dynamic hair better and easier.
I don't want a new version of Poser until Poser 8 runs better!
I'd like to see Poser 8 improved so it goes as fast as Poser 7 (on my Mac, PowerMac G5, 2.7 DP, with 8Gb RAM), which is itself slightly slower than Poser 6.
Opened a file yesterday in Poser 8 for rendering (this being faster than P7). Noticed that deleting figures took longer - what is an almost instantaneous deletion in P7 can take 10secs or more in P8.
It might, of course, have something to do with the OS - I use P7 with OS10.4.11, and P8 with OS 11.5.8. But P8 was sluggish on 10.4.11 as well.
And I'd like the chosen tool to stick on saving, not revert to the 'twist' tool each time. That's not fixed yet.
Anyone else find P8 alow on a Mac? What's it like on Windows (32bit)?
Note likely to upgrade to 9, but perhaps the next version of Pro if the money is right and the features are worthwhile.
My interest is the Hair Room. I'm improving in my use of the hairstyling tool, but I'd like to see some major investment in time and thought with that. Even though I don't do animations (at this point, anyway), I almost always use dynamic hair now, and the ability to style it more intuitively would be a huge step forward.
I also think that there is something that needs to be done with how the dynamic hair relates to materials. While I understand that something very thin and semi-transparent is going to interact with light differently than a big solid block, the disparity between regularly-modelled stuff and strand hair on the shading front is just too much. I don't know what it would take to correct that, but it needs to be done, especially for those of us who want to use more and finer strands for better realism.
And of course, more stuff from Bagginsbill I'll take anytime. I agree that he would be good to let loose in the material room, maybe develop some really good quality presets. His freebies are great, but they're more involved to set up than most folk are ready for.

ooh **Dizzi - i did not know the shift trick.
Another thing I would like is for the scrolliing thingy for the library to be a bit wider, alternately, it could stay thin, as long as after you drag the scroll thing it can't accidentally fall off if you look away and select the wrong folder.

I'd like clickable spinners instead of dials on the parameters pallet, just like in Max, along with erh built in ability of zeroing them with a right click alone.

I would just like the parameters dials to respond quickly when i click and drag on them.

I second that. OK in Poser 6 but sluggish in P7 and P8.
I third that. And they overshoot. How annoying is that! Suddenly that arm is deeply buried in her abdomen... just wanted to move it like 5 degrees...

That particular problem is the intrinsic nature of a dial if the min and max settings are high. Means that even the slightest movement is going to affect things a lot.

That's if you can get it to move; damn thing's very stiff at times, even with just one character in the scene. With more characters it's easier to type in a value than to move the wheel.
it drives me crazy

As I said before, instead of dials, I'd like Max like spinners instead.

it's not too late to give them suggestions on P9, unless they're result of unfamiliarity w/poser.
I don't like the up-down arrow adjusters (e.g. carrara). they work o.k., but dials are
the poser trademark, like the vertical y-axis. larry did it that way because when he looked at the
apple ][ screen, y-axis vertical and x-axis horiz., just like on graph paper.

I second that. The new libraries are great.
I also second the request to be able to make the library scroll bar wider.
I would like Poser to be more intelligent about what you're trying to select. Often when you put the cursor over something, it highlights items that are 2-3 layers BEHIND it, and can't seem to see the frontmost object at all... except very briefly as you move the cursor around (but can't seem to stay highlighted). This is not a consistent issue at all, but it is frustrating when it happens. I know you can right-click and select anything that the cursor is touching.. but Poser could be a little more smart about it.
Bring back the thicker scroll bars! These are too damn skinny, even for a precision mouse and nimble fingers. If you have arthritic fingers and/or a balky mouse, those anorexic scroll bars introduced in P8 are a disaster. They are difficult to SEE, much less control.
A longtime wish... The ability to have two scenes open at the same time.
Oh yes, it would be nice for Poser not to crash when you move out of the app for a moment, say to check email or do something on the desktop. P8 is a jealous mistress that way... she wants your undivided attention, and not just when rendering.
bill has addressed users' concerns in re: poser library scroll bar in earlier msgs, and one might
add that it's possible to move items up/down in library window either by dragging the scroll bar
(1990s tech) or by locating mouse pointer anywhere in window, then moving scroll wheel up/down
or waving finger over magic mouse (OS X) as seen below:
however, bill may be persuaded to thicken said scroll bar if they pay for the time needed to do that.
p.s. the detail of showing 128X128 anti-aliased icons in icon view is an issue for the OS in
question, and we are aware of certain difficulties they've had in regard to OS X, but I daresay
Vista should not present any probs.
Quote - >>I didn't think about that... must give it a go

Ya that works... but it loads everything and over rides the lighting... so
- Selectable inventory when loading multiple PZ files....
Or at least a dialog check box that says import lights yes or no :)
IK off or on in preferences (global)

Try it a hundred times quickly... use a complicated scene and use what you suggest a hundred times to choose one hundred different characters, props, poses, materials, etc... then post again to say if that's as easy as just having a wider bar...to me a wider bar is easier.
Actually, if we had arrows 'up' and 'down' ( like the arrows on your right on your browser to this forum ) you could move the scroll with with finer movement... like in the heirarchy window... scrolling through a thousand items and the little scroll bar is slow to respond and flies beyond the object you wanna highlight.
This is nitpicking... but showing how much Pro 2010 rocks - lotza luv!!
You can have .pz3 scene files in the library – in a way. Credit to whoever posted this tip.
Create a text file and enter:
{
version
{
number 4.0
}
readScript ":Runtime:Pz3_files:borgqueen:Borg Queen.pz3"
}
Using whatever path corresponds to your .pz3. Save it as a prop file e.g. BorgQueen.pp2. You can also save it as a .cr2. Place it in the appropriate library folder with a thumbnail and you’re done. It would be easy enough to automate this and generate stub loaders for a folder full of .pz3s – easier if you already have thumbnails or images that could be batch converted to thumbnails.
You can also simply change the file extension from .pz3 to .pp2, which seems to work – I only tested a couple of files.
The advantage of the stub loader is that the .pz3 can exist anywhere, even on a network share using a UNC path. The requirement being that the .obj, .jpg etc. files being referenced have to be either in the runtime or have an absolute reference – either local or UNC. So you can have:
readScript ":OtherMachinePoserBorg Queen.pz3”
As long as the file references are in the form:
":Runtime:textures:BorqQueen:borg_queen_texture.jpg”
Or
"OtherMachinePoser borg_queen_texture.jpg”
N.B. I tried firing up the web server and using:
readScript "http://127.0.0.1/Poser/Borg Queen.pz3"
but no go. Since they're starting to use web protocols in Pro 2010, it may work in the future.
