Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 23 1:20 pm)
What's causing it is that you have not used any of the options to customize it for how you want to use it. It is set up for noobs who have small runtimes and can't find their way around after closing and re-opening.
Search the forum for "klingon toothpick" and read about the options.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
If you have a long session and open many folders during the session - and you have the option checked - it will re-open those folders when you start Poser. The number of open folders will increase if you open other folders in the next session. After some time you will have all folders opened in your library and Poser will open them when you start.
In a large runtime this will take a lot of time and also makes the library window contain a huge number of items which is more difficult to navigate.
The library scans folders one level below what you see. If you open a runtime library in a given category and it has 20 folders, each with 20 folders or items below, then 400 items will be scanned. If you have 1 folder, with 400 items below, 400 items will be scanned.
Splitting runtimes can help, but so does splitting folders. The important factor is simply how many items must be scanned when you open a branch in the library. If you split them in such a way that there are still 400 items to be scanned, then you won't gain any time back.
To really gain speed, you want to cut down on how much must be scanned when you open something. This usually requires that you insert another level of folder and split the existing tree into multiple branches.
Imagine you have a props folder in some runtime that has the following folders:
A (and 20 items under that)
B (and 20 items under that)
...
Z (and 20 items under that)
When you open this runtime in props, you immediately are presented with 26 folders, A through Z, and the library scans the insides of those as soon as it shows you a label (A, B, etc.) for any of those. If you can see all 26, then it will immediately set about scanning 26 * 20 = 520 items.
Now suppose you create four new high-level folders and rearrange the content like this:
AtoG (and you move A through G inside this folder)
HtoN (and you move H through N inside this folder)
OtoT (...)
UtoZ (...)
Now when you open the props folder, you will see those four folders and the contents of those will be scanned. Since collectively there are only 26 items in all four together, only 26 items will be scanned instead of 520. And these are folders, not content, so they are cheap to scan. (Items must be examined, whereas with folders all you get is the name and date info. Particularly bad are pose files, since they must be opened and parsed to find out if they are animated poses and how many there are. 520 pose files takes a long time to scan.)
If you then open one of these, such as AtoG, then the subfolders will be scanned - A, B, C, etc. But there are only seven of those in AtoG, so the items needing scanning upon that action are only those 140 items in that branch.
So - if you really want to reorganize, splitting runtimes or folders alone won't really do it. You would do best to create another level of organization and put things in that organizational structure so that you group the things you use together in the same folder, and things you don't use together in different folders. Then you won't be opening (and scanning) things you have no intention of using in the current session.

Maybe I missed something... but WHY is it scanning all the sub-folders? Why can't it wait until the main folder is clicked, then go to it? Why does Poser 7's library seem so much quicker? WHy is it doing all these transactions at the bottom of the window all the time?
I didn't find anything on the PoserPro libraries after looking for "Klingon Toothpick",btw.

I think I see what you mean with the folder structure.. I have my own structure since the dawn of time, but it's gotten quite clogged throughout the years and probably needs some reworking. :)
I don't know if this has anything to do with the long access time before something loads.. Like a pose can sometimes be stuck in "loading" for quite some time before anything happens.
Also, in Item List view, how do you get out of the folder you click on without going back into "Tree View?" In all other poser versions, you'd click on the up arrow, which would be a boon in the "Item List View".
Never mind. I found it from experimenting. A FAQ about the major differences included with the program would have been a LIFE-SAVER!

Quote - Maybe I missed something... but WHY is it scanning all the sub-folders?
Because SM UI design people insisted that you would want to know the count of items inside a folder before you try to open it. The only way to know that is to scan the folder.
We're changing this in Poser 9.
Quote - Why can't it wait until the main folder is clicked, then go to it?
Because not everything that seems like a good idea is a good idea for all users, and they wanted it that way. I don't think the original designers understood how many items this would require to be scanned. It will be changed.

Where did you go to "find" anything? I was suggesting a search in this forum.

There are three ways to go up.
The backspace key will go up.
The other two are buttons in the breadcrumb bar. Which you probably do not have enabled, because you don't know what to do with the Klingon Toothpick.
There is a button with a picture of a folder with an up arrow in it. This goes up one folder.
And the individual folder names in the breadcrumbs are clickable so you can go up any number of levels in one click.

I guess you think reading the manual you actually got is pointless?

No this is unrelated. When loading something into the scene, this has nada to do with the library. The library click handler is nearly instant. It's Poser that is doing the loading.

I got a material disk from SM and apparently it does not come with a "Poser Pro 2010 Reference manual" The tutorial manual it does come with shows the Poser 7 library which is useless when talking about the Pro library.
THAT is the "Klingon toothpick"? I searched the forum for mention of it and found only this thread. WHy didn't you call it the pull-up bar at the bottom of the library window? That is what the bar on the animation bar was called a couple of times. I never heard SM refer to it as a" Klingon toothpick.". That's pretty descriptive.
Saying I have no use for a manual I apparently do not have is sophistry I never received a Poser Pro 2010 Reference Manual with my purchase of Poser Pro 2010. I have Tutorial manual and Python Manuals only. I cannot reference material I do not have or knew I needed and didn't get. Is it downloadable from SM? If so, I will definitely read it after downloading.

Well I can certainly understand if you don't have the manual. That's really odd.
On the help menu, you don't see that item, or do you mean that when you click that item you get an error saying you don't have the reference manual?

mine is in the main PP2010 folder. here's a download link from the S/M support pages
support.smithmicro.com/graphics/downloads/Poser_Pro_2010_Reference_Manual.pdf
lost in the wilderness
Poser 13, Poser11, Win7Pro 64, now with 24GB ram
ooh! i guess i can add my new render(only) machine! Win11, I7, RTX 3060 12GB
It's not in the Poser Pro folder nor is it in the help menu. Just the Tutorial Manual and the Python Manuals. That's all thet had on the disk besides the program itself.
Off to download and read. Back later!

Klingon toothpick brought up 23 references for me. Did you have 'in the last 45 days' selected for the search? Whenever I search I change the date range to 'older than 1 day' then refine by post date if I have to.
Sorry for opening this thread again, but my Poser 2010 library problems have not improved much.
Some days it's better, others it's worse. Like just now.
Starting up Poser. Library seems to work... After a while it gets slow.. stops responding..
Category icons at the top disappear..
Closing down poser and the library, starting up poser again.. Library shows.. Nothing. .No libraries, and I can't add any either.
Same process. Closing down poser, starting it up again.. Shows library, but doesn't load all the category buttons. Only some. Clicking on them brings up the root folder, but it doesn't update beyond that.
4.. Trying again.. getting up all the category icons, runtime showing, but it won't refresh at all. All is set to ? and no refresh is available.. It says 22 transactions pending. Waiting for 5 minutes. Nothing happens.
Rinse and repeat.. These errors are random.. Sometimes they happen constantly. Sometimes it starts working, if a bit slowly. It doesn't seem to matter what options I set in the library. Restarting the computer usually fixes it for a while.
Something is definitely wrong, but I can't to save my life figure out what. I understand that I have a lot of options, but it should at least work regardless? Meaning refresh things after a while, show all the libraries and icons?
Grappo,
What you're describing is very different from anything I've seen. There are certain things that are typical misbehaviors and this is not one. 22 transactions pending and stuck for 5 minutes is not a "fixable via options" type of problem.
In such cases I would contact SM - particularly John who is "ratscloset" here at Rendo.
He has a collection of things that have been messed up and found with other users help that you can check.
Things like Flash version, IE version, various drivers and DLLs etc.

A friend of mine reported a problem like that to me. He said it was some kind of problem he had with flash not being updated. At least that is what it seemed to me because it went away when he updated Flash from the Adobe site.
That's always a good idea to make sure it is updated to eliminate all suspects. When in doubt, call Smith-Micro or go to the Ratcloset!

I had weird library problems when I bought Poser 8 also - I went through all of John's solutions and nothing worked - it got to the last week of my return option so I went for a refund. This last week I felt my stress levels had returned to normal and I could maybe try Poserpro 2010.
No changes to my system whatsoever since P8 didn't work - This time Pro2010 installed perfectly, libraries work perfectly, one little issue with rendering not finishing but I'm sure it's fixable and I'm going through forums and the manual now.
Is there a difference to the way Pro2010 and P8 libraries work?
I've heard the permissions structure is slightly different in Pro from 8. I'm only vaguely aware of what that even means. I think it has to do with how it communicates with the OS and with the library which acts on my machine as a separate ap sometimes.
I'm sure Bagginsbill or Ratscloset will have the straight dope instead of barely understood over-hearings!

Poser has had weird interactions with other programs historically. Now, whatever might interfere with Flash enters the race to mess up Poser!

I don't know if anyone has had similar issues and figured them out.. But with Poser 8 (SR3) and especially Poser Pro 2010 (SR1), The library can sometimes take an eternity to refresh.. Sometimes it doesn't refresh at all and I have to restart the program and hope it does. Also, it's not uncommon for it to sometimes take a full minute in "loading" when I am selecting something, like a pose, before it updates the project.
What's up with this? I never had problems like this with Poser 7.. Does anyone know what is causing these library lags that sometimes makes the application nearly unworkable?
