Subject: OT: Why didn't Yoda tell Luke that lightsabers can block lightning attacks?

acrionx ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2010 at 12:24 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 7:38 AM

In Return of the Jedi, Yoda told Luke, "No more training do you require."  Then near the end of the movie, Luke gets zapped by Palpatine after throwing his lightsaber away.  Just an interesting question that popped into my head.

Yoda is kind of like my high school physics/chemistry teacher.

Sure, he taught a LOT of stuff.  Most of it useful.   But most of the stuff on the test weren't in the lessons (I was that girl with the notebook full of carefully taken, color-coded notes :P).

That was you?  I wanted to ask you out, but I was too shy... 😉

If Luke hadn't gotten Zapped, Vader wouldn't have had to turn away from the Dark Side to destroy the Emporer (Palpatine himself said in RotS that Sith often killed their masters)  Obviously, it was his destiny...

I would have been completely oblivious, unless you suggested getting together to come up with a good argument for Debate, work on a project, or run some lines for Drama. I didn't worry about dating until I was 17, and by then I was completely out of my league and the most awkward girl on the planet.

I was your male counterpart. By Grad School I figured  how the dating thing worked, and married a wonderful lady who took good notes.  😄.

MagnusGreel-

Dammit! You just made me shoot Mountain Dew out of my nose! Now I'll have to take apart my keyboard to clean it out!

jerr3d ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2010 at 11:16 AM

Oddly enough I don't think Yoda covered the Mountain Dew spewing technique either.

Lol.  I imagine that would be the most logical explanation.  Yoda did get zapped by Palpatine too in Episode III.

For that matter, why didn't Yoda tell Luke the Emperor could DO lightning attacks?

I don't think Luke had any idea Palpatine could shoot lightning out of his fingertips.  Up until that scene, all the dark side was good for was for telekinetically throwing things around and choking obnoxious, uppity subordinates.

When prequels you make, continuity a big problem becomes.

JenX ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 5:47 AM

He may have thought it was something he just couldn't do anymore.  I mean, think about it.  When Palpatine attacked Mace Windu with his Force Lightning, he went from Mildly Old to Sweet Lord How Is It Possible That He's Still Alive(?) and became all weak-like.  I mean, it's a logical progression...when you get old, there's certain things you can't do.  I'd like to see Yoda do some of that neat acrobatics at the end of Return of the Jedi.  /nod

Jen, palpatine used force lightning on yoda after killing mace... plus luke was only supposed to defeat his father, not go directly after the emperor... and maybe blocking force lightning wasn't part of the necessary training to be a jedi.

Morbo laughs at the flimsy human Jedi being electrocuted by Morbo's good friend, Darth Sidious.

But seriously, I think it was a suicide mission anyway, Yoda objected to it. I mean Yoda couldn't defeat Palpatine, so I don't think they really knew how to best Sidious or really thought it was even a possibility.  I think Luke was just meant to carry on the Jedi tradition, and not to actually go against the powerful Sith Lords all by himself.  Yoda was pretty much a pacifist in the original trilogy.... and oh my God I can't believe I was tricked into typing all this  stuff about Star Wars.....Argh!

D'oh! Why do things that happen to stupid people keep happening to me?

The real truth is, Luke threw away his lightsaber because he couldn't get it to render very well in Poser Pro 2010 with Gamma Correction set at 2.2 and using IDL. If you don't believe me check the stickies at the top of the forum or ask BB.

Rumor has it Luke is taking lessons to make a new lightsaber from Dr. Geep!

The medals were on long ribbons that went around their necks - so that the cameras could get a good bust shot of snooty princess leaning over the guys.

Chewie could have easily been included in the medal ceremony. That was clearly discrimination against large furry humanoids and is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Crazy alien chick FTW! (yeah....right....)

But knowing how to defend against lightning attacks would at least give Luke a sliver of a chance at defeating Palpatine.  With a bit of luck he probably could have beaten Palpatine all by himself.  Darth Maul almost killed Obi-Wan but Obi-wan was lucky enough to have Darth Maul allow him to flip over him and slice him in two.

I have been wanting to create some lightsabers for Poser.   Do you direct me to any specific threads pertaining to that?
