Subject: What image editor do you use to save to upload your pic?

drifterlee ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2010 at 12:46 PM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 3:42 AM

What image editor do you use to save to upload your pic? I was using Photoshop CS, but it won't activate or work in WIndows 7 64 bit. I was using Image Ready. I also have CS4, but the save for web function is working terrible. It grayscales the image and makes it pixelated. What am I doing wrong. Is there a better image editor to use to save images for the web? Thanks, Sherrie

Does PS 7 have a save for web feature?

I was using GIMP and then got Photoshop elements 3 and Paint shop Pro with a graphics tablet.

I dont see why Photoshop should not run in windows 7.

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2010 at 2:04 PM

well with Ps7, it errors on install.. so many said it can't be installed.

you just copy the CD to your HD, set everything you can to compatible with 98/xp in the compat mode, and it installs.... runs great infact...

If you upgraded to Win 7-64bit, you need request new activation code.  In any case, activation issues are routinely handled by Adobe support (I think lots of things go wrong with this little wonder)

Well, my copy of CS would not activate. They said they don't support CS anymore.

My Photoshop 7 installed without trouble for me in Win7 64 Ultimate. No compatibility modes. Straight install. I've never tried CS. PS7 (with Imageready) does everything I need.

I had PhotoImpact 11 on my first PC, and I still use PhotoImpact X3 on my current machines, even though a desktop and a laptop also have PhotoShop CS4 Extended.

PhotoImpact's animation utility is GIF Animator 5, and I still use it to make GIFs and AVIs, though now I generally use Flash CS4 if I'm making a swf or flv.

I use Paint Shop Pro version 7.04 and/or 8.1

I also have a version of Photoshop (can't remember what number), but I just can't get the hang of it. It's got too steep of a learning curve. The only reason I bought it is because it's such an expensive program and my nephew was able to get it for me at a very low price through a place he used to work.  I much prefer Paint Shop Pro.

I used to use the GIMP until KobaltKween convinced me that I really should give Photoshop a try. I was able to find a copy of CS3 on eBay for AUD$ 85!!! plus shipping: shrink-wrapped and totally legitimate. So, I've been doing everything I can to learn this incredibly complex (full-featured) programme. I agree with you on this, Acadia: very, very complex programme!

I reckon if you want to get things done, stay with what you know and what works for you. When you have time - which I never seem to have enough of - then learn a new app.

One of our premiere artists, Callad - who uses Daz Studio and Reality, incidentally - went from Photoshop 7 to the GIMP recently. He didn't say why, but he'd just got a new computer which I suspect was 64-bit and was therefore unable to get certain apps to run on it, which is why he went with GIMP... which I understand does come in a 64-bit flavour.

Learning curve for the GIMP? pretty much like Blender. You love it or you hate it. I'm weird, so I love them both. But I'm getting my head around Photoshop (play a LOT with tutorials!) and growing quite fond of it. For the first bit, however, I had to force myself not to open The GIMP at all.

ETA: oh, I forgot to say: the artist I work together with - HeRaZa - uses PSP. She's productive... I'm only marginally so. That should say volumes. :smiles:

like what? I ask out of real interest, because other than a couple of very old games, I've gotten everything I've tried to run, to run...

This is conjecture, MC... quite frankly I can't imagine someone going from Photoshop to the GIMP unless GIMP ran on the system where PS wouldn't. You could ask him - he's a well-known artist. I say "him" only because I'm not really sure if Callad is a guy or girl... hard to tell from the image descriptions...

You will be hard pressed to find something that won't run on x64 bit. The only thing I've found that is limiting are virus security programs...but even those are getting more options now. cough kapersky cough

Besides, all 3d programs smooth out operationally through x64 bit.

Photoshop all the way.

I loaded my old Photoshop 7 and Photoshop CS3 onto my new Windows 7 64 bit machine with no problem and and no requests for new activation codes.  The upgrade to CS5 went smoothly too.  So if certain features are acting strangely, I'd get in touch with Adobe.

drifterlee ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 10:20 AM

Adobe does not support Photoshop CS anymore. There response bascially was get a new version.

kawecki ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 10:51 PM

You can use PaintShop Pro 9, it does many things that Photoshop does, newer versions of PaintShop are by Corel and you know what happens with things that falls in the hand of Corel. If you can find somewhere the old PaintShop Pro 5, it does all the basic manipulations you need for an images, is very fast, runs verywhere and is portable (no installation needed).

Stupidity also evolves!

They told me this for PS CS2 as well, but I got it working myself. After you install it, right click on the PS icon, & pick the compatibility tab. At the top under compatibility mode choose Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (service pack 2).

Doing this allowed me to run & activate the program. I get that annoying User Account Control pop-up every time I use it, but that I can live with.

I use PSP and it's okay unless you want to do a thumbnail (those always turn out bad for me after compression).

I just save the image as TMB.jpeg, and use the cropper to crop a 200 by 200 pixel image. Then I open it in Image Ready and pick the right size I want to upload.
