Subject: OT: Facebook not efficient way of Making friends(if you start from 0)

Facebook sucks for people with no friends. Yeah you can get a few messages of people mainly saying "who are you?" or sometimes exchange mails...but usualy they'll be people from overseas who just want American friends or whatever.

To me, it seems facebook is meant for people who already have friends....

I've sent messages to tons of people and like i said , either no one responds OR i'll get a "who are you?" email  in which then i reply and they stop contact

You hear people telling "Alone? get out and meet people". Easy to say but, when you are alone, any "outing" strategy results only in feeling even more harshly your loneliness and been even more lonely.

to me, it seems thats banks only make loans to people who already have money.  maybe principal is same.

But on serious, I just joined the facesbook recently so I could track progress of new Miki 3 character.

To do this I become friend of "Miki Smith" (their joke, she is child from Smith Micro), and many people who are also "her" friend send me friend request, because maybe we have something in common.  After all, things in common is basis for friendship.

Of course, many of peoples were ones from here only using their reasonable name and nots forum name.

Maybe is sound silly being friend of 3D character, but is interesting so maybe you can try this.

This place - or any social place like forums and such - are great places to get to know people. I've made some incredible friends on here and elsewhere online. Like any friendship and relationship, it takes time and honesty and a willingness to care for others: that will guarantee you friends. The rest? it's just contacts.

I have friends on here that are heaps closer to me than most people at work, and a lot of people on Facebook.

That's the thing with facebook. For me, i want to use it to meet people who live in my city and want to make friends. So i just try and message stragers who live in my city..not easy to find..the only way to find is by messaging people that are FRIENDS of a local university, or language school in my city etc. Usually these people are young or foreigners..

You guys probably aren't looking to find friends that live in your city. You go to Graphics or Poser(as Medzinar said) related pages in facebook, and of course you have a common interest and you may message people there..

The way i do it.. is just message people who may live in my city. wee have nothing in common except maybe be near the same age.

I could join a facebook page about Poser and i would, like you, make friends. But that's not my goal. My goal is use facebook to make friends with people who live in my city.

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Sat, 06 November 2010 at 11:39 PM

Friends based on what, Joster? What do you have in common? I guess I define friendship on what do I share with other: common interests, similar views on things, etc. You need a point of departure.

Go with what interests you. What are you passionate about? There are going to be others passionate about the same thing. With these people, you will find it infinitely easier to be friends with than someone who does horse-hair-dressing and likes sitting in cellars chanting Celtic hymns sipping Red Bull with strong herbal elixirs.

Unless that's what you're looking for. I'm sure there are clubs that do that sort of thing.

I really don't bother so much with CG things in the facebook (there are plenty more specialized sites).

My most interest there is finding another person speaking same language.

Is not common interest, but is easier to find out if you do haves one.

Facebook is basically an extension of phone texting: short-attention-span theatre. It's "lol-wtf" territory. If you're -emotionally- older than twenty-five, you're not going to get it.

"Got pissed last night... what a wreck!"

"Hey, my puppy Squeamish at 5 months..." "Oh, she's darling!!!" "He!" etc...

another problem on facebook is that it has a bad reputation for pervs trying to meet little girls and all that stuff, so trying to find a friend there is high risk. Who you are talking to may not be who you think they are.

Better to go to the library or even grocery store and meet people there...go to an event that is about something you are interested in. Find a club or something that does stuff you like, maybe an astronomy club or something. if you're trying to find a quick escapade for the night, go to a sleezy bar someplace, whatever.

The point is you will have much better luck face to face than on facebook.

I recently got back in touch with a dear friend of mine from college thru Facebook and also got in touch with my old grammar and high school classmates. It is a joy to know how their lives has turned out since we parted ways at graduation. Facebook is a good way to get that instant connection and contact with long lost relatives, friends and acquaintances. If it's friends you want to make, why not start with those you already have in your past e. g. high school classmates, college classmates, grammar school classmates, your work mates, etc. You may find out that a few of them may actually have an interest in 3D art.

I use facebook to stay in touch with family memebers in Afghanistan, every now and then they send a status update if they happen to be near a pc and got a little time, and we can see they are doing... as well as they could given the situation. Also my closest family member is 6 hours in a plane away Facebook does make it easy to see new pics of my nephews and share pictures of my daughter with her grandmother etc etc.

I do not have anyone on facebook though that I do not know face to face, I generally prefer to know someone in person then just online so no random people get added to my list.. ever.

Yep. I just got a facebook account last summer and looked up all of my friends from high school and nursing school.

Only a handfull of my facebook friends are friends I've met online, and none are friends of friends that I don't know.

So far as meeting people goes, go out and get involved in life.  Volunteer at a hospital. It's a great way to meet new people: other volunteers etc.  Try volunteering at a nursing home too.  There are lots of seniors who are isolated from their own families and have no visitors and would enjoy the company. One of my very best friends was a lady that was 40 years older than me. I met her when I was in my early 20's and she became like a second Mom to me. She died 6 years ago.  So never discount the ability to be friends with an older person.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it! My advice is get off the computer and go out into the world and start interacting with people. You will get no where if you solely depend on the internet for your social life.

In order to use webcams for video-conf for the last ten or more years, you had to use a credit card.  And the other person is usually nekked and is only texting back.  Doesn't even own a microphone.  WTF?

As Acadia so aptly put it: FB is for re-establishing old friendships (because you can easily find anyone on there) and for keeping up with friends you already have. It's not a great place for meeting people... not really set up that way. There are other networks that are.

We kept in touch with our girls whilst we were in the States on holidays last August (we live in Oz)... would have been lost without FB. MSN just isn't quite as handy, somehow. FB lets more of the family know what's going on. If they want to know, all they have to do is log on.

If you're an intensely private person, FB is definitely not for you. Anonymity and FB are mutually exclusive concepts.

Acquaintances help you move, friends help you move bodies.

From what I have read the only place where friendship can be experienced is a foxhole in which you and your buddy are squatting while the enemy is throwing you everything they have, kitchen sinks included (but beware of that guy as soon as the bombing stops).

I myself have never trusted anybody outside my parents even just my wallet.

I have over 300 freinds on facebook. Many are people I worked with at Disneyworld. Many are people who do ghostbusters stuff as we do.

Its how we all keep in touch. When I was in the hospital this past year, and posted about it there, all my freinds knew that day I was down and might possibly be out for the count.. and hearing so many well wishes really helps when you are in a pinch like that.

Do I talk to everyone every single day? Nope. But am I always interested in something going on with them? Yep!

markschum ( ) posted Mon, 08 November 2010 at 10:27 AM

Friends cover a large range, from people who would make large sacrifices for you to those who will say hello even if its a bit forced.  Friends happen with some common interest so you can start with people you work with and expand as you meet people.

You can begin by just asking some of the people at work if they would like to stop for a drink after work one day, or go to lunch. You dont have to pay for them, just suggest a cheap place to eat or get a coffee.

I have a lot of 'friends' at various graphic sites and I dont talk to most of them, nor do they talk to me.  No one on my friends list at Artzone sent me money on my birthday for instance.

Gareee ( ) posted Mon, 08 November 2010 at 10:34 AM

Hmmm artzone....I haven't visited there in ages!

There are varying levels of freinds though. I have family of facebook, close freinds I've known for 30 years, and people I have had un hanging with we met just a month or so ago.

But facebook just categorizes them all as "freinds", which is fine with me.

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

I use Facebook to keep intouch with family I don't regularly vist with such as neices, nephews and cousins. It saves a lot of postage come Christmas time. Most of my Facebook "friends" are muscians. It allows me to know who is playing where, who just released their latest album, and who "partied too hard last night." I have no one on my list I do not know face to face and very seldom get friend requests. I like that.

Dispite the fact there is an account for this screen name it is for the most part to plat Mafia Wars as kyhighlander mentioned earlier but I do not get friend requests about the game. My real name is how I deal with Facebook. That is where my real friends are though there is some overlap as folks recognize my face on pdg's account. These folks will get a confirmation.

There is no real privacy when you use it though. Set all the flags you want but sooner or later some spammer gets your email addy. Google searches pull up Facebook as well.

If you want to make friends pick a way to meet people face to face as was mentioned earlier. If you want to meet a lot of folks who couldn't give a rats a$$ about you; play a social media game there or join a "cause."
