Hi Guys,

I have taken advantage of the recent sale at CP and bought Poser 8.

All seemed to be working fine until I installed the Poser 8 Service pack Number 3.

After which I get several error reports in the section of the U.I. where the library should be and a constantly blinking cursor with the Windows timer on it as if is constantly trying to load something, and the library stays fragged.

Can anybody help with some advice or a solution, as is the software is unusable.

I am runnning xp pro 64 bit, on an intel i7 with 12 gb ram. I have also attached a screen grab which illustrates the problem I am having.

any help / advice would be greatly apprieciated.

Cheers,

Swordman10.

Several or 2?

What are the other errors?

Regarding the one you screen grabbed:

The library GUI is trying to learn the CP search parameters for the Search tab. The GUI does not hard code the search parameters because the list of vendors, product categories, etc. changes all the time. So it gets them from CP on startup.

The error is that it was unable to do so. This can be because CP is down, but since you mentioned getting other errors, it is more likely due to a firewall blocking the GUI from talking to anything at all, including talking to Poser.

Firewalls usually give you control of TCP access on a per-app basis. Some firewalls remember the actual executable binary that you gave permission to, others just remember the name.

When you upgrade software, the name of the executable stays the same, but the binary changes. If your firewall is remembering the binary, it could be that it now believes Poser was infected (modified by a virus) and is blocking it. A service release looks a lot like a virus - it modified your existing program.

As a quick test, you could completely disable your firewall and try launching Poser. If that works, then you have to go into the firewall config and figure out how to re-enable Poser as an app that is allowed to talk via TCP ports.

Note that I'm not talking about necessarily allowing Poser to talk to the Internet. There is a difference. Imagine a corporate phone system. Sometimes you make office-to-office calls that do not leave the building. Sometimes you dial out to the world via an outside line. You can imagine that a user may be blocked from outside lines while still being allowed to make inter-office calls.

So a firewall can do the same. It can be configured to completely disable an application's use of TCP, or allow just localhost (inter-office), or allow access to other machines (outside line).

You have to figure out what firewall you have and how you configure its control of per-application settings.

Hi baggins bill,

Thankyou for your quick reply.

The error I am getting is the one illustrated in the screen grab..I mentioned that I thought it maybe comprised of several issues due to there being several lines of errors showing in the Library U.I.

The machine in question IS NOT connected to the internet and has no facility to do so. My firewall software is the windows standard firewall that comes with XP PRO and it is disabled.

The requirement for Poser 8 to connect with CP, was that introduced as part of the service pack upgrade.??, because I did not have any problems before installing SR3.

Cheers.

The ability to connect was always there - that's how the CP search gets populated.

But it's not supposed to generate a fault report. Nor does it really care.

You said the library stays fragged. Do you mean you clicked the error message OK button and it still doesn't work? It's supposed to. In my system, if I disconnect the network cable, launch Poser, and get that error, the library is still populated and clicking OK gets everything accessible. Is that not the case for you?

Correct.

I try to click 'OK' but it does not do anything.

I have just tried an install on my other machine running windows 7 Premuim 64, and although I get the same error I am able to 'OK' it and I can load the Library as normal.

Most odd.

Compare versions of flash player on the two machines. Are they different? If so, perhaps making them the same would make a difference.

Thanks baggins bill,

I will try updating the flash player and see what happens.

It is doubtless an old version as these machines, and the 'problem machine' in particular which is over two years old, are purely for 3D work, no internet, no multimedia, no other software accept CG related software.

Will have to try this later as my 20month old son is currently 'fighting' me for control of the keyboard..Lol

I have this.  The Only advince I can give is learn to live with it.  Which is basically what tech support at Smith mico told since it doesn't actully effect performance.

I tried updating to the latest version of Flash player. But the Problem still exists.

Its not a problem on my system running windows 7 as I can just click ok and carry on as normal.

But for some reason, on my system running XP PRO 64, it will not allow me to okay the error and carry on,  so the Library will not load, making it useless.

Anyway, to the back of the 'Hard drive' it goes, it was worth a punt at $99.00

Back to using Carrara 8 Pro.

Cheers all for your help.

SK.

Why does poser use flash to do anything? That sounds kinda weird.

Yesterday I jumped too on P8 bandwagon and encountered that dastardly empty library content problem.

I solved it by:

  1. removed Flash player;

  2. reboot

  3. using IE, go to Macromedia page and install the updated ActiveX control;

  4. using FireFox, , go to Macromedia page and install the updated plug in;

  5. check on YouTube with both browsers;

  6. check P8 (if you have a firewall, check that it can at least do whatever it wants on 127.0.0.1).

Things now work.

"That sounds kinda weird." Yes, it is weird, but dealing with DAZ people is much, much more weird...

Bye!!!

GIMP 2.7.4, Inkscape 0.48, Genetica 3.6 Basic, FilterForge 3 Professional, Blender 2.61, SketchUp 8, PoserPro 2012, Vue 10 Infinite, World Machine 2.3, GeoControl 2

Quote - Why does poser use flash to do anything? That sounds kinda weird.

The new library manager is not just Poser - it is for all Smith Micro graphic apps that have content libraries. Currently only Anime Studio and Poser are using it, but the goal is to have one library GUI application for all 3D. This reduces costs and accelerates development - no need to debug multiple implementations.

Flex/Flash was chosen because:

  1. It could be integrated easily into all 3D apps.

  2. It is nearly perfectly cross-platform.

  3. Developing in Flex is faster (more features in same amount of time) than any other candidate environment.

An addition to my list: IE MUST NOT be in offline mode, otherwise you are back to the empty window.
