Subject: REHASH: V4 Expressions: Bizzaro world

What's with the expressions/mouth/face of V4?
You create a smile, whatever, and when it renders it looks so bizzarre that its scary. I've just deleted a number of renders that appeared upfront prior to render to be looking pretty good..then render...holy yikes !!!!

Its very frustrating. I've seen some real good ones, but I surely can't get them to look right..the mouth is always contorted in some strange way..the lips seem to grow, the top part of the mouth sticks out...I don't know...it just isn't good for me.

Maybe I have to move to Miki 3 ...although her face doesn't look too good either.

is it smoothing or something like that?

Its so frustrating to me, that I ended up shutting down Poser and writing this post. It makes me not want to even continue on with Poser anymore. Maybe I need to learn DAZ Studio...any better in there?

and if you have the banner up above with Alice..she's looking pretty out of it too ..
in fact, right now, there are 4 or 5 ads on the page..none of the V4 have smiling..they're all serious looking. hmmmmm

and just to add...it gets old having the serious look expressions all the time, but at least the face ends up looking normal pretty much.

also...purchased expressions...I'm now thinking they look maybe pretty good or at least better, on the unmorphed V4 head ... as soon as you inject a different character, they look all strange....at least my experience.

The morphs will behave exactly the same in any rendering app, so changing from Poser to D|S or 3DS Max or whatever won't help you if you stay with the same figure and morphs.

Yes, expression morphs can have a lot of problems when mixed with face shape morphs.  Yes, that surely sucks and there is no easy workaround for that when it happens other than doing your own expression morphs.  At least you do have the morph brush in Poser, although it would be a huge improvement if they added an "Along Surface" mode instead of only the spherical falloff range that it includes today.

note another aspect of this problem appears when doing fitting morphs for conforming clothing by hand - very often they don't mix well with each other.

I find it funny too, when I'm playing around with morphs or expressions (especially the smiles, the part between the mouth/nose) that I notice the difference between view and render.  In constantly spot rendering (habit from when I started 3D), I always make sure I know what I'm getting before I hit that render button.  I even full render a small image at times just to be sure lol, I don't like spending hours rendering to find something wrong.

They are truly awful.  I can only advise that when you use smiles, you have to adjust mouth height and width, reposition the teeth, and try to take the dips out of the lips because when lips stretch they tend to disappear.  You might have to change the lip depths too.  It seems that Daz doesn't take this stuff into accountability when they make morphs.

However, I've noticed that the Girl 4 morphs work very nicely even on plain ole V4.  You just have to use them sparingly.

There are a million reasons to quit this heartbreaking, frustrating hobby.  This is in the top 100.

This isn't entirely DAZ's fault - although granted, there are problems with some of the morphs in the default shape, when you morph the face into a very different shape from the base morph, there is just no way to be sure how any of the expression morphs will mix with that.  The greater the difference from the base morph, the more borked the expression morphs are likely to be.

plus , thinking about it, a lot of the characteer morphs are done in zbrush and other apps, so the entire mesh is pushed around differently for sure

Or more likely very few people bother to adjust the teeth, tongue, and inner mouth parts, meaning that when combined with other morphs are more likely to be exposed.

This is a good example of why DAZ's androgynous mesh planned for V5 is really a terrible idea by the way.

I had the same thing occur to me when using V4's expression morphs with my custom morphs, they all look distorted even when smiling.  I cringe using the built-in expression morphs themselves.  I never knew you can correct it with the morph tool.  I had to use it to smooth out the distortions just through her gumline.

This is exactly why I showed Sabrina Blinker in some different expressions (not released yet so no promo images available yet, I did submit her though, still waiting on Rendo), and a little on Tindra Thompson, so that you can see they're able to express without disfunction.  I'd have liked to include free expressions for them, but don't know how to create the pz2/fc2 files without including morphs (unless I delete them by hand in Notepad++). > Quote - plus , thinking about it, a lot of the characteer morphs are done in zbrush and other apps, so the entire mesh is pushed around differently for sure

And this is why I agree that it isn't entirely Daz's fault.  But the thing is, I can imagine it would be that much more difficult creating expression morphs for every kind of character morphs you can imagine.  I think it's impossible to be honest.  I think it would be a necessity for vendors to include some expression with their characters, I would if I knew how to create them.

what I do is create a morph for my characters face, then all the other morph and expression dials should be zero.  Then I add the expression pose at say frame 30 and then I render at say frame 16 or something, and that often looks fairly okay.
