The picture I've included here is the something similar I hope to recreate in Bryce.

It's by Hans Holbein the Younger but I have a problem with it. While I can find 2d versions of the left-hand facade, the right-hand side eludes me. I'm hoping someone could find a link or copy of the right-hand view that I could use for reference.

It's known as Zum Tanz or House of Dance and it resides in the Kupferstichkabinett, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung, Basle

I see lots of problems with this right away. This was a painting on two walls of a room and never in 3D. As such the middle arch that splits the corner can't exist. If it were visable from the projection on the left it would be seen on the back wall of the right projection, not the arch. The arches perspectives are too deep. they run into each other. The balcony is alternately 6 or 20 ft deep. Still if you want to make some adjustments for reality I'm sure you can come up with something great.

I managed to get an earlier sketch of the left side from wikipedia. I'm guessing this was a facade on the outside of a building and the dark grays represent actual windows. That's why no further ornamentation was done even on the final sketches. You could leave these blank or create a large rehersal space 1st floor and rooms 2nd, 3rd, 4th. The first arch was probably the door and square over it was the address sign.

Electro? Some very good points there. It took me a while to see that your pic as you say is an earlier version of the left side - I have that pic too. As for the arches being too deep, I agree, but I think it is possible to break some laws of physics and see what happens - you all know I've done that before...LOL. I wonder if MC Escher was inspired by Holbein. However, this stuff does demand a lot of study. Everytime you look at Holbien's work you see some detail you missed at earlier viewings. I do have something in mind for ALL those blank areas.

When I first came across the Zum Tanz it had an article attached that talked about this being painted on the outside of a building in Basle, but I've lost the link and never copied the article.

There's a great old bookstore here. It used to be called Book Eddy. All kinds of interesting old stuff would wash ashore. I picked up the Book of Kells and the Dore illustrated Dante's Purgatory and Paradise among other things.

They moved because the Henley street bridge is closing for three years. Now they're called Central Ave. Booksellers. I've been wanting an excuse to hunt them down now they are in new digs. I'll let you know what I find out.

However, I've been in touch with the Museum in Switzerland and they've offered some help, so I'm hopeful. The reply to my first enquiry lead me to believe that this building actually existed and the painting completed, but both were destroyed and there is very little information on either, though it is thought that two of the faces on the right-hand facade are the owners of the building and that the commissioner was a goldsmith.

The Sandrart site has a button at the top right of the page that gives you the English version of the text :) The facade was painted on the house at the corner of the Eisenstrasse (Ironstreet) and the Tanzleingasse (Little Dance alley) in Basel, both streets are still there in the Basel market area. There is some doubt whether the work was actually done by Holbein.

As far as museum fees go, a while ago I contacted the Whitney museum of American Art in to ask if they had a poster or whatever of John Sloan's "Backyard". They had a postcard with the image and were willing to send it to me for $ 1.50 + $ 84.00 (shipping and admin. costs). I asked if they couldn't just plunk on a stamp and mail it to me as postcard, but that was not a permitted option, I decided to decline.

So the 35 Chf was not that expensive in this day and age :) 

If my little project had any monetory value I would be happy to pay for the pictures, but like most of the stuff I do, it's just for fun. As for $85.50...they have to be kidding.....

In the end though, a facing pic of the right-hand panal would be useful, but I can just about get by without it.

That's the Backyards, in the end we found someone, who knew someone, who had a book with pictures of 20th century American Art etc etc :) 

Well I finally got the image I was looking for. I e-mailed Sandrart.net and asked permission to access their site. They came through for me and I got a pic of the right-hand panel. I don't think I can post it here though because it is not in the public domain.

However, the detail is amazing. Lots of stuff I couldn't see on the 2 panel pic. Having studied it for a few, I think there is probably a lot of humour in it. Baccus stands by a barrel while a drunk lies asleep, resting against the barrel. I'm sure I can see Venus and Brittania. I'd bet good money that the characters were all known to Holbein in one way or another. There's one hell of a party on the second level.

Rosie? You mean the locomotive? I'm doing this to get my head back into Bryce. I've found it hard to get my act together since my stroke so this is kinda like therapy. The loco is giving me serious headaches. I just haven't bothered to sticky this because it's nothing to write home about really.

Electro? Yup! That's Bart. I've been trying to find Mr Burns too, but no luck. My thinking is that Holbien knew the characters in this work or they were well known figures at the time. So maybe I can fill this with figures from our time....................
