Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
Heya Ralph,
Your post timing might take a little while to get a good answer. It's late Sunday night, most are in bed or getting there. So don't be disappointed if you don't get a good reply right away. It'll get more attention tomorrow. There are a lot of very talented texture artists here who, I'm sure, would be willing to help ya.
Two questions:
Are these "Mythical Wings" a free item, a purchased item, or something you made?
Can you post a pict or two of what you are trying to do? That'll help us see what you want.
Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things! ; )
Do you mean these wings?

If so, you need to go into the material room and reverse nomals on all of the different wing sections.
There is this wing package too. I haven't used it.

Here is a handy script that will turn on Reverse Normals for everything all at once.

I hope you mean PoserPro 2010. Even though reversing normals will alleviate some problems, you must take into consideration that certain mat room tweaking must be applied to make the textures respond to light better. By default, gamma correction is active in the render settings, which means all transparency, bump, specular maps will need to have their own texture gamma settings reset to 1. Diffuse_values should be decreased to less than 100%. And whatever lighting options you are incorporating into your scene, should be reevaluated and intensities decreased to accommodate Gc.

What i am trying to do is create 3d props as realistic as possible to use in my photography.
What i am finding is that i am spending way too much time in Poser .
This is as realistic as i can get my wings to look...
The wings are called Mythic wings
I can upload them if someone needs them to try.
cheers

Ralph,
No one here is without sin. We're human, we make mistakes.
That being said, there are a lot of very talented modelers and texture artists who work very hard and struggle to ink out a living doing what they love. And its a real honor when they decide to share anything they create with the rest of the community.
You are a talented artist and could contribute (and learn) much, and be a valuable addition to our community.
The wings you are using, and the link, is to a Warez site. This is prolly the biggest sin you could commit here. But there is a path to redemption.
Please take a look at some of the links provided above and perhaps consider purchasing a product either here in Renderosity's store, or over at DAZ3D's store. A legally purchased product means, you too, take art seriously and want to see other artists succeed and sincerely want to continue to be a part of us.

I am so sorry for posting a link to the Warez site ,i didnt realize it was until you pointed it out. :(
I Did a google search for the wings and that was the only site that came up with a description for them.
I did pay for them but cant find the site i purchased them from.
I will check my DEVART account and any other 3d account i still have access to,had a major Hdrive failure and lost alot of my Files.Cant find the original Zip for the wings .
I have paid for all the props i use ...here is a summary of my purchases from here
111806296* $15.50 08/20/2010 Paid,No Shipping
111736273 * $8.00 03/21/2010 Paid,No Shipping

Last digit removed to break the link.
Admin should be able to comfirm these are in my account.
I totally understand the amount of work that the owners of these props must put in for minimal reward and I need for them to succeed so as i can use them as a resource for my work. In my original post i am sure i stated i was willing to pay for assistance so money is not an issue .
I would like to thank you for your very civil heads up and i will make sure that I look a bit closer at the links i post.
Kindest regards
Ralph
"three different texture maps for the wing bases, six different texture maps for the feather parts"
so maybe that means some of 'em are realistic, once ya buy it from rdna. only $6.95 (mythic wings). then the experts can tell ya how to texture it and render realistic.
p.s. that is another badd warez site. at least now 'rosity and rdna know about it. (posted on 11 Jan 11).
Great to read your apology! Very cool
Perhaps the easiest way to make the Wings a 1-click trick is get get them set up the way you like and then "re-save" it to your library. This will record all your current settings and apply them the next time you load it from the library. Now onto the problem.
I think, what you're saying is the wings look too solid and flat, like cardboard cutouts. Here's how to fix that.
What you want is some texture to them. Apply a texture map to them, but also note that there is a Map Strength dial in the Material Room. You do not have to set the strength to 100%. Ease that dial back a bit to keep the wings kinda etherial looking. Also, (very important) assign a bump map to them. Again, the "Bump" has a map strength dial, go easy on raising that dial setting. If the Wings came with textures, there'll also be a bump map.
Next look at the "Transparency". The Wings should be a little bit transparent to wards the tips. If the wings have different parts (which they do) you can dial in a little bit of transparency.
Once you have the wings looking just the way you want them, re-save them to the library.
BTW, the image you've posted looks great! A little attention to the wings and you'll knock it out of the park! ; )

Having gone and looked at the Wings in question, located at runtimedna.com
Great looking wings and at a terrific price. But the textures appear to be painted rather than actual bird feathers. I'll post 3 feathers I've located.
Perhaps you can make, or get someone to make, a decent bump map from one of these. Then its a matter of baking your own bump map for the wings using Photoshop or similar proggy.
Here's the first...

Thank you All for your time and input.
Looks like i will have to spend more time in the material room trying to get the wings right.
If anyone is interested in setting up a set of realistic mythic wings and selling the file please feel free to contact me.
Meanwhile i better get back to photography and putting bread and butter on the Table.:)
Sometimes i wish i had never delved in 3D...as much as i love it i cant afford to dedicate the amount of time that it needs :(
cheers
all and thanks again.

I have spent way too much time with my mythical wings trying to make them look realistic without any luck.I am using Poser 2010 and are a real novice ,i am willing to pay if some one could set up a file that i can just load into poser and pose the wings and render them without having to play around with the materials lab..
If anyone is interested that has used these wings and has them looking realistic i would much appreciate your help.
cheers
