Subject: Question about exporting a Facegen OBJ to work in poser.

bobvan ( ) posted Sun, 23 January 2011 at 1:17 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 9:29 AM

I am a DAZ user but have created a face for a freind to use with poser 7. What setting do I need to export it so it will work in poser? Or is there a way to get a 1 unit+1cm (Which I believe are the DAZ settings) to work in poser?

Unless there have been changes recently, there is no way to import a Facegen obj into Poser.  I know there a step-by-step tutorial by Denise Tyler at the Facegen site to convert V3 for Poser use.  But the process is not easy.

Ok thanks

Wait till next year for the version which supports poser import/export. It was promised for 2011 but got pushed back till next year I think. I am also waiting for this. Facegen does an amazing job at transforming a mesh from a photo with incredible accuracy. Faceshop was just a total waste of money. Another alternative in the meantime is Argile2. A bit more complicated but also very affective in reproducing meshes from images, except it is not automated. You have to adjust the mesh yourself using morph brushes. The only other "cheap" way is to import the obj file from facegen, make your daz figure head invisible and replace it with the obj. its tacky but it works to a degree. The only problem is matching the textures. You can also import the different expressions you save in facegen for your head.

Thats what I hav been doing except You have to adjust the neck with D formers plus you have to re do it all again to add expressions.  I dont use it much I just had made a facial morph for a friend who uses poser and he cannot get it to work.

Attached Link: FaceGen Example

FaceGen won't work for face morphs because the head has a different number of polys than V4, etc. I tried it when I was first beginning and had no idea what was what.

On another note, all the exprtessions that are exported from FaceGen, CAN be used as morph targets for the FaceGen head.

I used FaceGen to make the head of my niece, that I used in the image in my Gallery. It does work well, and it would be a blessing if it was compatible with Poser. Until then, I just wing it and find a way for it to work.

Actually im pretty good at matching texture I agree with the post above its great if you want to bring someone you know or some known actors into a story. Here is an example of Deanna Lund from land of the giants face genned. I still wond up replacing it with a close looking generic character since I prefer to work with native morphs plus the nice textures makeup that you can otherwise not apply.

hello all, I'm also more confused with facegen and poser, I have been making faces at facegen, and would I combine it with the body of James, who I ask, why when I create a morph, all vertices involved moving but when not in combination, only the vertices in the mouth moving, is there anything that can help me, this is a picture for example, sorry if my English bad,and thanks

Goodmalam can I ask how you are getting the facegen obj to show up in poser?

Zev0 ( ) posted Tue, 25 January 2011 at 7:45 AM

In poser go File import-wavefront obj- then go to where you exported the face from facegen and open that .obj file in poser.

Hello folks and I thank Bob for asking this question. I think these guys have pretty much said it's not possible because the error message that you get is: Target geometry has wrong number of vertices.

It is just too bad that the team at FacGen got lazy.  It looks like there are a lot of people waiting for them to pick up the ball and make their obj files Poser friendly.

Thanks for the repsonses people.

hi bob, this is how to wear head facegen in poser, first import your obj facegen, then scale and place it as you please, remember or write the number in the parameter setting, scale, XScale, yscale, etc, it is useful to provide morph, import facegen head to used morph, equate with the first parameter settings have you write, the head facegen 1 and 2 should be the same location, then export facegen head 2 with the settings as morph target (no world transformations)
if so, click facegen head 1, in the properties settings click load morph target and select obj that youu export ealier, now your facegen head have a morph. but the problem is that i asked above, sorry if my english bad,i use google translation

Hey guys, I have great news!  Or I hope so.

I'm receiving the FaceGen free trial Customizer tool from them.  You can get it from them for free by sending a request at: support@facegen.com  .

I encourage all of you guys to download this so that we can work out the problem of sending a obj from FaceGen over to Poser.

I was wondering if we could make the a team effort?  If so I have a FG obj that we all could share in order to reach the common goal of cracking the conversion problem.  The goal would be to try and make it work for a V4.2 model.

Does anyone want to try and help?

lukeswall ( ) posted Fri, 04 February 2011 at 6:01 PM

Oh, and here is the link to the users manual on using their Customizer:

http://facegen.com/customizer_help.htm

There you will find instructions on how to carry out the proceedure.

Has anybody made any progress on this? I tried once, let it run all night, and woke up to an error. I didn't set ti up on a drive with enough space for it to run the operation (10 gigs or something like that) and havent gotten around to trying again.

I haven't made any progress so far.  But next week I'm going to try and get a hold of a Wiz that I know over at Smith Micro.  That is if the terrible tech support (if you can call them that) will put me through to him.  They typically like to tell people that you have a training issue, yet they really don't offer any training there so they lead you to a brick wall and then say "Have a nice day".  I think everyone here has gotten their run around before.

The day a good company buys Poser from Smith Micro will be the day that us Poser fans will come back out of that dark cloud that we are under right now that leaves us stewing with problems like this.

I'll let you all know what happens.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 26 February 2011 at 6:49 AM

However, this is clearly not SmithMicro's problem.  And, to be perfectly honest, they are not expected to 'fix' a 3rd party's software just to make it work in Poser.  If there was a collaborative effort between the companies, yes this would be addressed immediately.  But has not been the case throughout all these years.

If i ever win the lottery,  i'd buy Poser from Smith Micro on two conditions, though.
