Subject: 'Swapping' objects for render

I seem to remember Vue boasting that you could replace objects in a scene (i.e. low poly to high poly, etc) for the render. How is that accomplished?

I'm using Vue 9 Complete, and attempting a rather intensive render, but need to 'swap out' some pieces already in place with either low poly or place holders until the final render. (Nearly impossible to work with all pieces in place at the same time)

Right click the Hi rez object in the World browser and choose "Replace by..., Keep proportions" option, then choose your placeholder. It will replcae your hi res object, do the same again for final render to replace the dummy object with the hi res one.

I've tried that, but doing so re-orients the object, or the placement winds up being off in some way. I was hoping for a 'don't show until render' or a 'unload from memory' type of feature as replacing all of my objects one at a time places huge a huge demand on resources.

hm is the pivot point of the original high reso object off centre perhaps? sorry I've never really used that feature except to replace an object for one I thought looked better or such, not for the resource savings :(

Well, reading my post again, what you need is not "replace by, keep proportions", but "replace by, fit object".

You can always purge memory and flush history after replacing. This will erase the previous hi res object from memory.

No, I've tried reducing the object by its complexity, and then removed all texture maps to make it as small as possible in memory, yet when reimporting the original object back to its original place, it tends to reorient around a random axis.

Bruno:

I know what you meant as I have done both Replace By options. Flushing memory is part of my workflow, as is reducing the number of undos to 1, and disabled the automatic backup feature (That crashed Vue every time it ran) Currently running in 64 bit.

Was hoping for a magic pill that would make certain parts of the image 'invisible' to the computer until it was time to render.

I'll have to rethink my approach to this render.

Temporarily hide objects from the OpenGL views by placinf them in a hidden layer? Setting some viewports to wireframe? Disable background draw threads? These can halp to get better response from the program if this is your problem.

That is the easiest way to go. layers are better but just clicking visibility on individual items is great. I always hide my poser people for example either in a layer or just with visibility toggle.

I second Bruno and hobepaintball, place the objects on hidden layers.
