Dell website won't show me a Vostro with I7 880. Only I5 or I3.

Where did you find this?

Last month I got a new desktop with I7 860 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive. I love it.

I think you'll be very happy.

Whaaaat?!? Why is it so expensive?

I know that the 880 CPU is twice the price of an 860, but still that's only a premium of a few hundred dollars. I paid US $1250 (about 1287 AUD) including monitor and with a Radeon HD 5770 graphics card.

What's the deal on this machine? Do you have a 200% national tax on computers in Australia?

In Oz, everything is expensive, particularly up here in QLD. The iPhone? Back when I bought my 3G (initial model) going price was 750 - 850 bucks at the Apple Store. At that time they had a promotion going in the States for $100 US. And the ads were worded so obscurely that it took forever for me to sort out that those prices only applied to the US. :crying:

Windows 7 Home Premium at Walmart was - if I remember correctly - somewhere in the neighbourhood of $168 US. Here? AUD $ 269, and that's with discounts.

Back when Poser 7 was all the rage, it sold at Harvey Norman's for over $700.

Oh, and we have the GST... 10% tax on stuff like that.

Mind you, even with ridiculously high cost of living (here in Bris-Vegas) and shabby wages, this is still an awesome place to live!! 👍

Speaking of the iPhone: how much for one in the Eastern US? Here? $859 - $999, depending if you want the 16gig or 32gig model.

New customers get a sweet deal right now on iPhone. With 2-year contract, $99 for the 3G. For the iPhone 4, $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32 GB. Upgrade with another contract, $299, $399, or $499. Outright purchase without eligible upgrade, $499, $599, or $699.

I jumping into this threed, since I'm thinking of buying myself a new computer...my dear oldie is getting...old. (bought it 2002 :P)

So I'm looking around and I really dont know what to go after. Shall I buy one with just one core and then conect it with my oldie. Or shall I go for one computer with dual core, and make my oldie rest?

And if I go for a computer with dual core, what is the thing to think about?

Oh and I uses both Poser and vue. And I also play lots of game, and right now I'm wanting the latest starcraft, but I cant play it on my oldie

2002?  Your best bet right now would be to get a new system or build one yourself.   You'll need a new motherboard (if you're current one is intel or if the current MB won't support a newer AMD socket), new processor, and a new graphics card at the least.  Depending on how much money you want to spend, what you'll be running, and what gfx card you choose, you might even need a new power supply (I had to upgrade my power supply when I went with the gtx275).

Basically you need to ask yourself what you are able to spend and what you want.  I think the lynnfields i7s are the best bang for your buck if you can afford them.  For GFX cards I wouldn't spend too much because if what I've seen is true, the new AMD cards are going to be better than the 480s.  Plus the best cards are always overpriced.

About cores, they are mostly for hyperthreading or multitasking.  Each core does something on its own so even if each core is a little slower, you might be able to get more done overall.

edit: BB aren't the droid phones just as good?  The main thing I'd worry about going with iphones is you might need to jailbreak them because of how apple are pretty fascist when it comes to their store.

I don't know how much computers cost in Sweden.  However dual cores are old technology.  You should search for a quad (4 cores) and at least 6GBytes of DDR3 Ram memory.  If you buy and out of package unit like Dell etc, everything in it is balance with the right stuff.  In the U.S., you can buy one for under $1000 US.  That type of computer works extremely well with Poser, Vue, Carrara, and ZBrush.  The chips are Intel and I prefer those to AMD because they have a metal shield surrounding the chip giving one IMHO better EM shielding.  Jan

@Winterclaw: I've never used a Droid or an iPhone so I couldn't say. I was just posting the prices RV asked about. I do have an iPad and I jailbroke it right away. grin

@jecnodde: I have Poser Pro 2010 and it is able to use 32 cores very effectively, so the more the better. The best choice for processor right now, IMO, is the I7 860. This is 4 cores with hyperthreading, giving 8 effective processing units. Arrow1 is getting the 880, which has a higher clock speed, but that adds a lot to the cost.

Intel 8xx processors have dual-channel memory interfaces. The 9xx processors have triple-channel memory interfaces. It is common to see see the 8xx come with 8 GB of RAM and the 9xx with 6 GB of RAM because you need 3 of everything and 12 GB gets very expensive.

I did a lot of research and felt that for 3D rendering, the 9xx is not worth it. You need lots of RAM, and having 6 instead of 8 matters. As well, the similarly priced lower-end 930 is not much faster then the 860 - it is usually less than 10% faster, while adding a lot to the cost and losing 25% of the RAM.

Of course, if these are out of your price range, then the I5 can usually get close to the performance while reducing the system cost by a couple hundred US dollars. But the I5 is 4 core, not 8. In Poser Pro 2010, this would nearly double the render times.

Of course, all of these factors depend on your sensitivity to cost. For me, I used to never think to buy a computer over $1000. I could get a nice I5 system for about $900. The I7 860 was $1150, but nearly twice as fast, and that $250 difference really didn't matter to me. I got a package deal with a 22-inch monitor all for $1250.

My oldie have been upgraded during the years, but I have reasch the limit of what the mothercard can handle...and  there is signs that my graphic card is getting old.

Start mixing with new mothercard and such is over my head; I'm not techical minded at all and I'm very proud that I manage to upgrade both memory and graphicard without any help from some of my male friends.

I have a very thight budget...being out of work. Lucky there is a company in sweden that sells used computers for a good price. So if I'm going for the high priced computer, it mean saving for about 1-2 years; not sure my oldie will "live" that long.

I'm kind of used to work with limits in both poser and Vue; rendering in layers, save often, reduce texture size and soo.

If I were in your shoes and I was for many years,  I would keep the old computer until it dies.  Just because its old doesn't mean that it as an expiration date stamped on it.  IC chips can last indefinitely providing you don't dunk the chassis in water or have a cat throw up on it.  Just blow  it out every year with a straw (let the spit dry for a couple of hours) and it will just fine.

I still have a hard drive that I bought back in 1997 that works just fine.  Jan

PS use a good software cleaner like McAfee or even the built in MS Cleanmgr every couple of days, having junk on your hard drive will slow things down fast, also defrag the critter weekly.

I'd just recently gotten a new computer myself, and it's a beast. AMD Phenom II X6 processor at 3.2ghz,  8gb of RAM, and a 1tb hard drive (still kept my internal 120 and 160, and my externals.. I don't like having all my data in one spot).

This sucker runs Poser 7 like a champ. I'd love to eventually get my hands on Poser Pro 2010 so that I can take advantage of the 64 bit stuff, and try out IDL... buuuuut Poser 7 will have to suffice in the meantime.

Phenom II X6 is cool too.

They are neck and neck. In 3D rendering benchmarks, sometimes the I7 860 is faster, sometimes the X6 1090T is faster.

Those were the two processors I had in mind, BB, but the price of the 1090T won me over. Haven't been disappointed yet, I must say! Granted, anything was an improvement over my 2ghz Celeron with 2gb of RAM.. :D  Now, renders with volumetric lighting take at most about 20-30 minutes, instead of 20 hours like the one I did on the old computer. :>

I am keeping my old computer and using the hard drives as a storage, software and  a program base. The reason I am getting Windows ultimate is so I can wireless network the new and old machines together in separate rooms as I do not have enough  physical space for dual screens and the towers. My theory is that the less I put on the on the new machine the faster it  will be  as a rendering tool.I mainly try to put together animations and as you are all aware they take long time to render. I am also learning to make models with Blender. Along with all the software needed these days: Adobe Photoshop,Premiere Pro and all the Microsoft Office products they all use a lot of RAM. I suggest get as much RAM as you can afford. Cheers

Ok, after some saving, birthday and christmas money + the fact that my oldie started to make odd sounds...I decided it was time to buy a new one.

So I got to an swedish website for a company that sells used computer, that they have checked and empty the harddrive.

I wanted to buy from a company, since in that way I get both return police and support - compare to if I would buy from a private person.

So new I got myself a new compter:

Intel dual core 2,33

4000..ish ram

Geforce 9500GT

all coasted me around 500 US dollar

And whoow... the diffrent; its silence, its fast :) Ok I know this computer aint very much compare to those new ones that is out there today: But I'm happy, for a budget I could afford I have got myself a real big upgrade from my oldie - and hopefull this new one will last 8 years too as my oldie did :) (my oldie do still live...just me sick of the slowness :P)

Thu I run into problem when i tried to install my old harddrive...the new one dont have any slots for IDE, so next thing on the shop list is an IDE adapter :P

Total came to $671 after taxes.

My only complaints right now are about the monitor.  It was all set way too bright and I'm stilll fiddling with the settings. Second, and most major complaint is Windows 7. I hate it! The Control Panel and Windows explorer are now a total joke! I'm calling it Windows for the 'hard of thinking'.  Anyone know of a file manager program I can use in Win7?
