Subject: What;'s wrong with Daz -- incommunicado?

What's wrong with Daz? Via their website I requested two download resets because the items would not open in Poser 4. I re-downloaded but got the same problem despite the "successfully installed" message. The product note said "For further technical support questions or concerns, please email tech@daz3d.com," whuch I did, only to receive a response saying "All customer service inquiries must be done (sic) on our support page," which is where I began and which of course lists answers to every question in the world but mine. I also tried the listed Daz tech phone numbers several times but there was no answer. Has the company folded?

Victoria_Lee ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 1:34 PM

DAZ is located in Utah and they don't work past 5 pm Mountain time nor on the weekends.

The best time to reach them by phone is at 9am Mountain time M-F

Thank you. Noted. However, that doesn't explain the inconsistent messages or lack of a less-than high-tech telephone answering device.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 1:51 PM

On a DAZ web page, click the Support link at the top, then Contact us and open a ticket. What product is it? Poser 4 hasn't been a supported version for some time so it may well be that the thing uses features that don't work in P4.

Victoria_Lee ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 2:07 PM

RHaseltine is correct ... unless the product states it's supported for Poser 4, it won't do you any good to try and get some resolution from DAZ.  They really haven't supported Poser 4 since P5 came out.

Thank you. Not really good enough. The Daz page? I already have a ticket. I wasn't asking for support on Poser 4 (the best version ever) and Poser 4 was never mentioned by me. I wanted advice on download installation. As it happens I have since solved the problem myself: the active folder has to be manually removed from an outer one within Library and then all is fine -- Poser 4 notwithstanding. Nobody told me this. I am incensed at Daz's inconstencies and inaccessibity, which have nothing to do with my Poser program. Daz's performance in this instance is neither busnesslike nor minimally courteous and appears to reflect the sloppiness that can come from having an automated website onto with you can deflect your bothersome customers. Thank you all for your thoughts.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 2:28 PM

Actually, to the accompaniment of much grumbling, Poser 4 was the officially supported version (well, P4 and PoserProPack I think) while Poser 5 was current. it was only with Poser 6 that they moved on, and then they moved on to using Poser 8 as the baseline (though if practical I think they do try to help with older versions)

However, Poser 4 is the issue - it doesn't support nested folders in the libraries, that was a new feature in Poser 5.

wimvdb ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 2:33 PM

You mentioned Poser 4 in your first post. A very antique version (more than 12 years old) which is no longer supported by anyone.

And it looks like you simply have an incompatibility problem because Poser 4 does not support subfolders in the library, newer version do support this.

moushie ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 5:50 PM

OK, thanks for all the comments. Now let's broom away the red herrings and put this issue to bed:

  1. My Poser 4 with updates is as robust as any later version (some of which I have tried and dislike). It handles DAZ downloads just fine, once they are installed properly.

  2. Proper installation involves "de-nesting" the active folder in Libraries. It shouldn't be difficult to simply say so.

  3. However, my complaint wasn't about Poser-anything or compatibility but about a bad business; about a company that is so inaccessible I suspected it might have gone belly up.

wimvdb ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 6:30 PM

Your questions have been answered.

What are you complaining about?

SteveJax ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 7:02 PM

If you had simply paged down to the bottom of their home page you would have found their 1-800 support number which would have solved your issue in mere minutes if you had bothered to call during business hours.

Lzy724 ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 7:15 PM

Daz also has a forum on its website, you could of gone there and perhaps posted your complaint?

Dave-So ( ) posted Mon, 11 April 2011 at 9:14 PM

IMO .. DAZ has pretty good support. I call them on that 800 number and get instant response. Even the contact page, I usually get a response within at least 2 days. It goes longer, of course, if you do one on Friday as they leave and don't come back until Monday. Even worse when /Monday is a holiday. The bums.

Heck, Poser 5 isn't really supported all that much...;) I've got oodles of texture packs with .mc6 extension, when the 'kick out the jams' .mc5 versions are kinda thin on the ground...can't use any P6 (or rarely) textures.

Used P4 for many a year, but eventually these things happen...

Poser 4 was a hyooge thing, sure, but I'll take these days over those, any time.  While Poser 4 was accessible, there was a dearth of 3D editing software available in a comparable price range.  Blender wasn't really happening yet, Wings 3D was a ways off.  Ray Dream Studio was no fun at all.  We used to get excited about Anim8tor and such, back then, and that was awfully limited, too.  Now there are tools all over the place, many of them free, and a wide range of fairly affordable programs.  Not to mention cloth, hair, shaders, Poser Python, MAT poses and all their descendants, and ERC, none of which were there, in the P4 days.  (I could mention Firefly & raytracing, but I'm not sure I want to. )

Sorry for the OT.  😊  I came in here to post that I thought yesterday was Easter, and so Daz was closed today.  But I guess it wasn't Easter.  Man, I gotta get a calendar.  Thought it was Easter because Doctor Who started, and last year it began on Easter weekend.  Now I'm confused.

@moushie:

I hope your Daz purchases work ok for you in Poser 4. Daz, generally, has really good customer service and I've not really had a problem as long as I've been buying from them (since my own Poser 4 days - long, long ago). I don't buy much these days though.

@the general forum:

It's rather silly to expect that a content maker would support a program that is now nearly 13 years old. No one even bats an eye that a program made today isn't supported in Windows 95, so why would anyone expect that Poser 4 would still be supported? Sure, if you want to use it, that's up to you. But you can't really expect a content maker not to take advantage of the latest OS's, computer power and the latest versions of the software it's made for, can you? Even so, you can still buy Vicky and her friends all the way back to the first versions (some of which DO work well in Poser 4).

??

Since, by all that's been said, V5 will be a weight mapped figure it won't even work in Poser 8 (or DS3). We don't even know whether it will work in Poser 9, though we're all reading BagginsBill's last cryptic comment as meaning that P9 will have weight-mapped rigging of some kind.

I currently am liking P8, although my system is struggling. P9 will never work probably.

My stuff works on P8. Everything I had at the time worked in P4, 5, 6, 8 .. did they even have content for P1 and 3? other than the included stuff ?

Is you issue with the product and Poser 4 a library/folder issue or is it "...the product doesn't work..." issue.

If you are attempting to use any of the Gen4 figures or products in Poser 4, be aware, they do not work in this version.

They really don't even work all that well in Poser 5.  As a beta tester, the lowest version I usually test Gen 4 items in is Poser 6.

Perhaps if you give an example of the product and the problem, we can give you more help.

If daz doesn't support Poser 4, why does almost every installer default to a /Applications/Poser 4 directory?

:p

RHaseltine ( ) posted Wed, 13 April 2011 at 1:53 PM

The installers don't store absolute paths - that's either the last used path (fro recent installers) or the location of poser.exe (for very old installers).

Well...i have a few questions.  As always i went to the Oracle first,  but when i asked her to repeat her answers... they were completely opposite from the first ones.

So i'll ask them here in hopes of some answers

1)  Is there a Thought Police Academy?

2)  Is April 23rd the start of a whole new Dr Who series?

3)  If answer 2 is yes...then who is going to play the new Dr Who?

4)  Whatever happened to the Dr Who with the long scarf?

5)  What was the name of his female partner?

  1. OP did you try calling the Daz techies back?  (maybe they were on break and playing pool)

7)  Does Daz have a breakroom?

8)  If answer 8 is yes...then do they have a pooltable in their breakroom.

9)  Has anyone had any problems like i've had with Poser8?

3)  If answer 2 is yes...then who is going to play the new Dr Who?
