Subject: OT: Best Incremental Backup Tool (Windows 7)

mathman ( ) posted Sat, 21 May 2011 at 5:51 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 11:30 PM

Hi all,

Was wondering what other Poser and Windows Vista or 7 users use to back up their Poser data ?

Specifically I am looking for a utility that backs up incrementally (which the Win7 backup tool does not). This is because I am always adding new data (via purchases, freebies or stuff that I create myself).

Thanks,
Andrew

Acronis True Image has never let me down.

Thanks, cspear. I assume this works for selected sub-folders as well as an entire hard drive.

BTW, I love the chook in your avatar. Is that a Poser chook ?

Acronis True Image is a fantastic product, with lots of features other than just incremental backup.

For pure incremental data backup it's hard to beat Retrospect though.

As a professional photographer working digitally, my data is my livelihood. I use Acronis True Image to make an image of my system drive (3 times a week) and entrust my data to Retrospect (every day).

As an all rounder, though, TrueImage is the way to go.

Hello,

I use Rsync, it's free. It is similar to Mac time machine, I heard. You can restore to any given point in time.

Only requirement: Your backup medium must be capable of running a better file system than FAT (for example NTFS, because file system links are required). I have  a Verbatim external USB disk, which could be reformatted to NTFS. For some vendor's disks, that's not possible.

Additional benefit:  It's much faster than a full backup.

Best regards,

   Michael

It's one of Noggin's IIRC.

Hey there Acronis users :)

I can't seem to be able to  backup/image one external hard drive to another external  both plugged into a Toshiba Qosmio USB port.   It seems to recognize only one USB drive.

Any ideas?

Running True Image Home 2010 on Win 7 but from the x86 Program Files.

Thanks for any insight :)

I haven't tried it but the internal harddrives are always faster anyway.  Just backup to your computer and copy over to the USB drive.

masha ( ) posted Sun, 22 May 2011 at 9:31 PM

That's what I was trying to avoid :)  We're talking of a 1 tb external drive  partitioned, with 153 gb used and needing backup.  The internal of the Qosmio is just 300GB with 180 gb free but I may have to do what u suggest.

Was just hoping I could do straight external to external if someone knew how.

And I don't suppose I could do incrementals if I move the original backup from the Hd  to another location, can I?

Thanks for the rep :)

You are only backing up 153 GB. Dependeing on what you are backing up the backup file is only going to be 20-30GB. So there is more than amble space. Backing up with the internal HDs is always faster so this procedure is preferable even if USB to USB worked.

You can do incrementals even if you move the original backup.  Acronis always asks where the backup file(s) is. But the original problem that Acronis don't want to copy from USB to USB may still persist.

Thanks you Vintorix.

Also read a suggestion to, after I backed up to the hard drive, I could do a restore to the external.  Not sure which would be better, that or a simple copy, but I guess I'll have to go with one of them.

Again ty.

Cheers
