Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 02 3:30 pm)
Whenever you re-organise your installed DAZ3D figure runtimes, please simply run the DAZ3D Figure Update batch file to update the location for the morphs to work. Typically, this would be a shortcut placed on your windows OS desktop (I don't know bout Macs, sorry).
You may run into some local security issues if you let Windows 7 block executable files outside of the Program Files folder area.
Eternal Hobbyist
Hmm... I wonder if you have your Runtime in a different loacation than the Poser program (which I belieeve is the default setting in P8); the DAZ installer may have installed it to the Poser program directory.
Make sure you install V4 and your other content where the base Poser content is stored; better yet, create a folder called V4 and install all of your V4 content to that folder. Put in an empty text file called 'poser.exe' to fool the DAZ installer, or tell the DAZ installers to install for DAZ Studio. After you've insttalled the content, you can add that directory to the Poser Library; just click the Add Library button (the folder with the running man) on the right side of the Library. and browse to the V4 folder you created.

The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Thanks, everyone. There is so much help here.
I tried to move the V4 material manually into the P8 runtime (Still don't know what a runtime is or why it is called that) and unfortunately when I opened P8 to look for Victoria in the Library I could find ONLY the material labelled Poser 8.
I suspect I will have to reinstall P8 again.
Yes, also noticed that the instructions for installing the V4 is to load it into P8... so it seems that dosen't work. I have to directly inticate that it should install the P8 runtime... is that right?
Thanks again... Just another happy day learning :)
Randy
Well, my P8 content is in Poser, and I think that is the default place for it.
I didn't know I could put my Poser content (You mean my library?) anywhere else.
So how do you devise a separate content library for V4 stuff, and keep it connected to P8 for easy access, through the Library I assume.
Thanks.
Randy
Hi everyone.
I downloaded again - I am really really glad that thing is free - and picked the path directly to P8 runtime for installation. Installation and initialization told me it was fine... so I opened P8 and looked in the library... again, no V4, no item in Downloads.
I did a search and no V4.
I have tried so many different ways to do this... nothing works so far.
I haven't tried starting a new file because so far, I can't trust the steps I have already gone through.
Don't keep downloading, just save the installers to your machine and you can run them (if needed) multiple times. Now, exactly which installers are you running? For Poser you need only the base, the one with dpc in the name. And exactly which folder are you installing to - it should be the folder that holds the Runtime folder, and if you are using Windows 7 or Vista it should not be in Program Files or Program Files (x86).
EDIT: Never mind! I didn't read the question correctly! lol

First, I want to thank everyone for trying to help me through your information and posts. I sincerely, deeply, appreciate all you are trying to do for me... and, of course, I feel so stupid... honest.
So I will tell you what I did last... of course, I re-read all the posts, then as markschum stated, I installed and made sure it was along this path... RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ People
There was no problem with the installation, and initialization tool place.
Then I opened P8 and the Library showed no indication of that download. There is no indication of anything new in the Library at all, no download or new character. I used "Explore" to search C drive for the material in P8, and the V4 material is there.
But it will not appear in the library, and so I cannot yet load it to use.
I know I have to be doing something wrong... I just can't figure what it is, even with all your help... some day I will laugh at this :)
Randy
V4 is tricky to install. I think we all had problems. I know I sure did.
Here is a picture tutorial. I think you might be installing into the wrong folder (the actual runtime instead of the actual program folder itself). Which causes a runtime within a runtime.
Hope this helps. Don't forget to do the initialization after installing.

Note that I've selected the Poser 6 directory. You will select whatever version of Poser that you are using. Not the Runtime, the actual folder containing the version name.
Then just click OK and proceed with the installation.

I chose Poser 6 so this is my path to find V4.

If you are using Poser 8 yours will be under

Are you sure about that? I tried reinstalling Poser 8, and the default location for the content is in the Shared Documents outside of the Poser directory. There is also an option to install it in the "classic" location of the main Poser directory. (Screenshot attached) I have it installed as the classic method, myself.
Check C:/Shared Documents first; If it's not at this location, try a search for the file Andy.crz

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Hi Acadia.
I went through that very process when I installed V4 one time, using P8 of course.
I will check on that again.
Hi WandW.
I can't clearly remember, but I think I used "Poser Directory," the 3rd choice, as I thought that was probably the best to use as the "traditional" option would work in a most straight forward way... after all if it was "traditional" I thought it was what most used, had no problems, and such.
I am the only person using my computer, PC, with XP Professional os. What do you think? Did I use the best alternative for installing P8 ??
I suspect I might have to delete and reinstall P8... what do you think?
Thanks.
Randy
Now, the only thing missing from the OP is which OS is the Poser installation. Vista and Windows 7 will prevent direct access to Program Files folder as a security measure. Much of the information provided is still rather unclear or too convoluted to exactly determine what is actually happening. Acadia provided a detailed step-by-step illustration for V4 installation which is, by far, as accurate as anyone could ask for.
Also, I would advise anyone installing any type of software application, read each step of the installation process. This is not to be a no-brainer procedure, there are too many hidden steps which will elude you if you choose to rush the installation. WandW's comment is a perfect example.
Can you please go and manually find the directory for your Daz People folder? Please don't do a search. I want you to go into your program folder and open folders. Once you are at the Daz People folder, please either make a screen capture and post it here. Please include the address bar. Or you can copy the entire address including the drive letter from the address bar and post it here.

Acadia,
That path is:
Poser 8/Runtime/Libraries/Characters/Daz People
There is also a path from the same Libraries just indicated:
Libraries/!DAZ/Victoria 4
Yes, that is !DAZ, with a "!" in front of DAZ. Inside this is what appears to be the needed Victoria 4 file of 10 Mega Bites. But I can't get a link to that when I open P8 and go to the library. It shows nothing downloaded and no new figures.
Are there other files that load V4 in P8?
What is Victoria 4 Base Power Loader? Is that needed to load V4 through the Library?
Thanks again.
Randy

We're trying to do two things:
Verify your FULL path. You did not include starting from the drive letter.
Verify the CONTENTS - that you have the files we think you should have in that folder.

Go back and look at my post. I added my screen. Does yours look like that?
We know it's C drive. We mean we want the full path, starting with C:, not some abbreviation.
My V4 runtime is
c:/User/Ted/Desktop/Ted/Runtimes/V4
Yours, of course, will not be in Ted's desktop because you're not me.

Here is the path:
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibraries!DAZVictoria 4
This (Victoria 4) then contains a load of items such as rHand.
No images appear in the opened P8 program.
There is another path, strangely:
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ PeopleRuntimelibraries!DAZVictoria 4
And this also leads to items such as rHand.
I suspect there is repetation, possibly because I installed V4 in a number of ways in my attempts to get it to show up in P8.
I will have to go now for work purposes.
I will return here tomorrow.
Sincere thanks to everyone.
Now we see what you did wrong.
You told the Daz installer to install into C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ People.
That was a mistake.
You must tell it to install into
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8
You created a whole new runtime inside the existing runtime. It's like you grafted a whole copy of yourself onto your own foot.

@ bagginsbill
Bingo!
Thanks for addressing the fix bagginsbill :) hugs
Hopefully this gets Randy on his way to using V4 :)
@ Randy
The !Daz folder you found at the following path, are injection files that poser uses. Don't touch those!!!
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibraries!DAZVictoria 4
This (Victoria 4) then contains a load of items such as rHand.
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ PeopleRuntimelibraries!DAZVictoria 4
As bagginsbill pointed out, you created a runtine inside a runtime. That's why you can't see the files inside Poser. Poser is looking in this path for the files: C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ People and since they are not there, it can't show them.
You need to reinstall into the path that bagginsbill instructed you to install into.
C:Program FilesSmith MicroPoser 8
Here is a link to a picture that may help you understand the various file formats in Poser and where they can be found.

I install Vr4 into an external runtime (I don't find it necessary for it to be in my main poser folder at all, i think it can be anywhere in poser 8 and above). After you go to that little suitcase icon top right to add the runtime to your runtimes, it is then important sometimes to run the little round refresh semicircle arrow thingy for the folder to show up.
Love esther
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!

Actually Poser 7 SR3 and above - and even in earlier versions of P7 if you have the search behaviour set to "Shallow". Not sure if the original PoserPro counts as an "above", but it does with SR1.
Randy, did you get it figured out?

I would try installing the V4 and if that doesn't work you can reinstall P8

If you have installed DAZ content in the wrong place, you can uninstall it if you hadn't unchecked the uninstaller tick box on installation. Look in your Start> All Programs menu for a DAZ folder, and the uninstallers will be there. Then reinstall it in the location BB gave you...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Randy said he has a PC with XP Professional - he's the only user - and he installed P8 using Poser installer 3rd option - traditional - Program Files.

Quote - Sorry... I don't know how to do a screen capture.
And it is drive c.
you can learn how by searching with google (www.google.com) using the words"screen capture xp". The first link is this: http://www.seoconsultants.com/windows/print-screen/ and its explains how to do a screen capture
Thanks everyone. I apprecaite all of you so much.
You know, I am not terribly skilled with computers.
I write reports, send mail, and such, but this is certainly pushing my boundries as far as program and computer smarts go. So please be patient with me. Let me reread all you have written, look up things, and think about what you have said, so I can approach even a small degree of decent understanding.
Sincere Thanks.
Randy
I missed that BB.
How to do a screen capture: Usually its this way, ensure that your favorite 2D program is up be it PSP or PS etc. Then to get the screen shot: your keyboard, upper right locate the key with the word PrtSc SysRq then hold down shift key and press that key. The screen shot is now loaded to your computer's clipboard, go to your favorite activated 2D program and click on paste as new image (Im using PaintShop Pro so it may have different wording for your paint program). Then crop, adjust etc to your heart's content. Jan

Hi Folks.
I downloaded V4 (the basic) and then followed the directions for installing it into my PC.
I initialized it, and then went to Poser to play with it. It is nowhere in the Library. I then explored on my disc, and I see it is in Poser under People. Is that ok or should it be manually placed under or in another file?
Thanks.
Randy
