Funny that you are getting wonky display only in the galleries, and for me it's in the forums.

Richard, were you using any type of custome CSS Style Scripting?
We've discovered that my problem is the result of something funky having happened with some recent change in site coding that has caused my custom CSS script that some people, including me, were using for the forums and the gallery.
With the custom CSS Style coding being used, the site displays wonky. If the custom CSS coding is removed, the site displays fine, but isn't displaying for a widescreen monitor as it would with the custom CSS coding.

Yes, yesterday I noticed that my gallery wasn't loading right either. I was using a custom CSS script there too. I've since removed the script. But I want my custom CSS script back and working again :(

Same problem, galleries only, using Firefox. Not using any custom CSS script. I went into My Gallery Settings where I had selected to force the images to display at full-size. Changed it to display images to fit my browser. Problem solved. But I have to click on the image to see it in a new window at full size and apparently it has to reload the entire image again, thereby eating up more broadband. Must have been some major change in code lately cause I had to re-enter my password to get in, and the Gallery problem started at the same time. I'm not changing back to IE - too many problems on other sites. It would be nice to have the gallery displays back to normal, tho.
This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

Try deleting everything in the CSS style box. Leave it empty and then save your options.

Just throwing this out.
What about going to the gallery options and pasting the following into your CSS Style box and saving the options? It might fix it. If it doesn't, you can always just delete the text again and resave the changes.
table { width: 100%; }
.content_cell { background-image: none; min-width: 98% !important; }
#topnavbar td table { width: 120; }
#topnavbar td { background-position: center center; }

Unfortunately it doesn't. The way the HTML is structured and sized is worse for the gallery because the widest chunk of content (the image funnily enough) always ends up overflowing the layout when the browser window isn't wide enough to accomodate the inner tables.
Although it's possible that there's a combination of style tags that will achieve the desired result for some people, for others, it's just a fact that their screen isn't wide enough to fit everything on when viewing some images.

been looking at that layout - squashed like that - for 2 years. it's not a new issue. (I just thought it was the way I've used Adblock and Noscript on the site..)

No, nothing to do with any addons, the layout is broken by design for the "use full image size" option. No amount of stylesheet tweaking will fix it, the underlying HTML needs a thorough reworking.
