The zip of Catharinas new Kain-textur contains a file which create a hidden folder on your PC, start a connection into the internet and !!!!!!CHANGE YOUR REGISTRY!!! while extract in a new folder. Could be, this will start only a promotionshow, ever you open the folder in your explorer, but I,m not a programmer and can,t interprete the rest of the script. Otherwise, such doing is bad enough, I think! You should open the archive with winzip and extract only the Poserfiles. Never use the "extract to folder" option of winzip with this file. Robert

Thank you for the heads up warning. This could have been quiet a bother for some if it is a virus of some kind. Thanks again. Sharen

Robert Kopp ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 5:48 PM

Not a virus, Sharen! Seems, it,s a promotionscript from Catharina herself! But doining things like this is really hard stuff and I see this nearly installing a trojan :-( Robert

SAMS3D ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 6:02 PM

Oh I see, my mistake, but yes you are right. Sharen

Dolphins-Dream ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 6:34 PM

I dont think she put it there on purpose.. she might have gotten it somewhere accdientally and you know how those little critters are.. they crawl into everything

Suppose what we call "evidence' (the things we believe to be true) is only what we see because it is the only thing we know to look for?

igohigh ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 6:39 PM

Has anyone given Catharinas the courtesy of contacting her before posting? (haven't yet seen this script but there's lots of woe in the forum today....)

Robert Kopp ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 7:05 PM

I,ve send a mail to her. I think, Priority by things like this is to inform and warn the people first and not to wait until they do have problems with it. Robert

igohigh ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 8:15 PM

Also it might be well pointed out that artists trying out "new things", especialy scripts, should best make a well visable post of such. With all the viruses and cr#* on the web today, even the slightest variation of the 'norm' could cause panic. Look at NStorm's infamous game Elf Bowling, they were actually put into Norton's code as a potential virus for a while two years ago simply because they came out with a new way for their players to interact their scores on line. (if your not familar with Elf Bowling, check out http://www.nstorm.com - very fun games & free too!) Also remember an earlier version of Spawn that was declaired to have a trojan. But in all fairness one must always be sure to contact the 'suspected carrier' first as to prevent panic and wrongful blame. Those who 'do not understand' tend to jump to conclusions and in some cases even "mobs".

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 9:18 PM

Hummm, how did you see the hidden folder? I unzipped it to a folder of it's own, I always have done it that way so I know what's going where...but didn't see any kind of scripts or hidden folders and I have view hidden files turned on. Think she changed it already? Marque

nitreug ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 10:25 PM

folder.htt is usually not really a folder but the setting of the directory. I do not understand why Catharina did that but do not think it will do any harm. On the other hand, i do not understand the desktop.ini file in the zip which has the following content: [{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}] WebViewTemplate.NT5=file://Folder SettingsFolder.htt PersistMonikerPreview=%WebDir%Preview.bmp [ExtShellFolderViews] {5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262} [.ShellClassInfo] ConfirmFileOp=0 I just hope that the artist do not start to spy or force us on some kind of marketing stuff. Claude

nitreug ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 10:26 PM

Good Catch Robert.

Marque ( ) posted Sun, 19 August 2001 at 11:36 PM

That's actually pretty rude. I don't think I'll be updating my account when the time comes. Marque

phoenixamon ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 12:37 AM

Hey folks, this was probably a mistake! A file called "folder.htt" is created by Windows automatically when a user customizes their view for a particular floder in windows explorer. It is an HTML file, like a web page, and it is created hidden so even the person who created it never sees it. This artist probably zipped up a full directory without being aware that a hidden file was in that directory. It would be an extremely easy mistake to make. You just zip the folder rather than adding files one by one to the zip. Let's not overreact. Phoenix

leather-guy ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 1:18 AM

This is true. I've recieved several flakey inclusions in zip folders that were honestly not known to the sender. It's an easy, 'though (luckily) not common mistake. to make. I"ve seen it more often when a MAC user uses a WIN9X machine than not. Until I setup filtering to block EXE's & ZIPs in my newsreader, I was getting 1 or 2 flaky files imbedded in newsgroup postings a month. Usually a WIN9X readonly/hidden/system file included when someone ZIPS something from their desktop. I use Ad-Aware 5.5 to keep on top of the most common Spyware, & visit Steve Gibson'e GRC site to keep abreast of the latest in sneaky datamining techniques & privacy assaults. I'd be pretty certain this is nothing suspect.

AprilYSH ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 1:35 AM

geeze, all the bad press renderocity gets do add up... even if the complaint is later withdrawn... the words are out, you can't erase them 100% with apologies. ( i've learnt the hard way :( and will probably still make this mistake!! :(( ) i'm thinking be a bit more considerate of renderocity's feelings... instead of seeming to bash, help her. i've seen her post here (i'm not a subscriber) and she seems english challenged, and that could be a big part of some of the mistakes. there's such a thing as constructive criticism, as opposed to bashing. as far as i've seen, she makes great stuff... what good would it do to bash her into non existence? her stuff is lost to the rest of us. instead, help her get better and we all get better stuff.

I know about the script more. If you don't know I am user of Windows ME, I made the up the zip file to folder that are not that self that by Win95/98 you can see dyrect in the folder what you have in the map without to open any image editors or another software. By install the zip the Windows the to update your windows and connection to Internet , that is ALL!! I change right now the extra folder to normal folder and you will not more have any scripts. That is also in the Poser4 you don't have the rsr files, the Poser4 Pro Pack don't create the rsr files any more, but I will post the rsr file about 30 min with the camera files for Kain. Hope you understand, it was not my intention to make you wory. See you, Catharina

Eowyn ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 5:14 AM

Thank you for letting us know this, Catharina. I think this issue should have been handled elsewhere and not here.

Marque ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 7:54 AM

Sorry Catharina, just so paranoid about virii and trojans these days. 8^( Actually it's good that this happened because I just bought a notebook that has ME on it and I probably would have freaked out if I zipped a folder and put it on my regular machine. Now I know what to watch for. Maybe we need a Valium dispenser here at Renderosity...lol Marque

Catharina Przezak ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 8:02 AM

Nice response.

black-canary ( ) posted Mon, 20 August 2001 at 2:08 PM

winzip has a checkbox in the add window that says "include hidden files." If you leave that unchecked it should only include files you can see. FYI

nas4a2 ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 11:04 AM

My (official) apologies to Catharina! I was wrong.

FYI nas4a2
Like I explained to Catherina (two years ago) I was wrong. At the time, as this happend, it was in the middle of the night here in europe and I could not be sure to reach Catherina fast enough via mail. That was the reason to post this warning first on this place. After some emails between Catherina and me, it was clear that it was a misunderstood. My apology and explanation was in one of this emails and its not impossible that I,ve posted an public apology in another forum too.

I believe you found this topic while searching the forum. If you find posts like this again, please take a look to the date first before answering. This was two years ago and it,s a closed topic.

Hello Catherina :o)
Much luck with your new server.

Robert

joffry ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 1:34 PM

oh wow Robert, this is one of those occasions where you 'read a thread' decide whether you should myob and keep your opinions to yourself, or post something. Then sit back and have a cup of coffee and decide not to post. I would have owed you an apology. Not that I was going to say anything nasty, but another voice to the thread was really not necessary. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned for us all here,,, learn to read... hmm coffee was good though,, pumpkin spice...

Robert Kopp ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 1:59 PM

Hello Joffry. I don,t understand the phrase 'I would have owed you an apology'. It,s a translationproblem. Could you tell me where the word 'owed' comes from? or could you write it in other words? But don,t expect an answer for now, I,m on the way to the airport to jump over to Mexico for some weeks (in one hour) :o) Robert

joffry ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 2:29 PM

enjoy your trip,, owed as in, I might have said something to offend you and would have to say I'm sorry... :))

Mec4D ( ) posted Sun, 24 August 2003 at 4:35 PM

OH guys.. this is old story.. please!! I forgot this incident a long time ago.. I was confused when I got the notification about..but after I look on the date was all clear.. as you see nothing was changed in the many years.. Thank you Robert and Joffry. ;) Keep Smiling! Big hugs to both of you! Cath
