Dr Geep, are you trying to do this for your own purpose, or for the benefit of visitors to your web site? 'Cause if the latter, you're at the mercy of whoever has something that will actually play wmv files in the browser, and that's a minority. It would be better to convert to something that has a higher percentage of in-browser support, e.g. mp3 if it's a straight audio file.

Okay, no I wouldn't rely on something that would serve up wmv only. Most users won't have it set up in their browsers. I'll try to dig up some code I discovered on the web a while back.

geep, the following code works in firefox:

give it a try in yer page.  it may also work in this forum, but they'd keelhaul me if I said how to do it, as users tend to freak out when this happens.  just substitute yer swf file, path/location and size in the above fields.  the above code may appear somewhat redundant.

So long as you provide a link so that the file can be downloaded and viewed locally, I wouldn't worry to much about having it play in the browser, as there are always going to be some people it isn't going to work for (intentionally or otherwise).

IE

Opera

BUT ........... NOT in Firefox !!!!!!! .............. WHY ???????????????????

oops!  flash was the html 4 standard (h264 is the html 5 standard).  I dunno if wmv was a web standard.  I haven't got IE, but there may be a way to ask users to install an FF plug-in to view embedded wmv. content type=wmv doesn't appear in the FF applications pref (OS X).

I'm pretty certain that it's something like Firefox doesn't (by design) use the required ActiveX control.
Alternative handlers (e.g. VLC) do work if they are installed and both FF and the player are configured correctly. The bottom line is that there is no HTML solution that will always work in FF due to either user choice or other factors.

I use Camtasia Studio 4 to make my video tutorials. It has video and the ability to do audio with it.  The files save as .wmv. 

All I do is upload it to my website.  Provide a link with some code that will play the video in its own pop up window in the size that I want it, which is usually 800 x 800 pixels. When the person clicks the link, the video pops up and plays.

What I do seems to work the same in IE and FF.

I wish I could email you the code.  But I use FrontPage 2000 to generate my website code and an addon called "Spawn" by Jimco.  It generates a unique code for each popup it creates. 

Here is the link. I don't know what "Web Expressions" is, but the plugin works for Front Page, and it's so very easy to use.

The guy who created it is very nice. When I first started using it, it wasn't geared towards frame pages and I was having trouble generating popups.  I contacted him and he  provided an updated fix for it within a day or two.

Here is a tutorial on how to do it using HTML code.  I think I'll try it myself the next time I need to create one for my website.

What I'm trying to explain, Geep, is that whether it works for your users is completely dependent on what they've got their browsers set to do. And most non-IE browsers are highly unlikely to be set to play a wmv file in-browser by default. Only a relatively small percentage of users are likely to change that intentionally. So if you want most viewers to see your video in-browser, you will need to provide alternative formats.

Can you point to live examples where this supposedly works for everyone? (Pretending for the sake of argument that Mac users don't exist.) I'm still skeptical you can get a browser to do what it's set not to do in its preferences... The code above is simple HTML, so it's not bypassing anything like that.... So if it's truly universal, that's great information, but it makes little sense considering all the kerfuffle about how difficult it has been to provide universal video support, pre-HTML 5.

Howsome ever, having said that, I believe the simplicity of this standard html code will allow it to run as expected on 99% of those PCs whose owners do not explicity filter this code.

Geep, I have full confidence that the code works. I develop web sites (and by that, I mean coding by hand for almost all of the HTML and all the CSS) as extra income and I can see by looking at it that it is functional code.

What I am less optimistic about is the "nearly universal" ability for this to work in browser. People have been stumped for years for just such a video solution (and Flash, flawed as it is/was, was the closest we got); and it's only now with HTML 5 that there is promise for that difficulty to disappear (but obviously it will take some time for everyone to have browsers that support HTML5).

User testing is a good idea. Try a page and ask people to check it and see what your results are. Maybe I'm being pessimistic. I suspect you'll end having to do some additional work to get things working for the widest possible audience. At the very least, a regular link to the same file (sans the target="blank" etc) with some text there asking people to right click and download if the video doesn't open in their browser. An alternative format for non-Windows users wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I hope you won't need that, but again, I'd be very surprised if you don't....

This simple code works just fine for me and ...

Clicking on a graphic:

using Firefox - ... downloads a short (~3 min) video file

using IE - ... opens and plays the video in a new window

using Opera - .... plays the video in a new window

This will satisfy 99+% of the viewers for this specialized information.
(in addition, there is an email and phone number on the web site, also)

These videos are supplemental and the basic information on the web site is available with additionl text, graphics, links, etc.

Your point(s) is (are) well taken and I appreciate your input, especially considering your expertise in the area.

Aha! Firefox downloads the file. That's exactly what I expected. But my understanding was that you required something that played in the browser. So yeah, if that satisfies, definitely. Glad you got the solution you were after.

Correct ... Firefox does not permit ActiveX which is why the Windows Media Player will not play inside the web page.  However, I keep the vids short (~3 min) so the download time is, I believe, acceptable, e.g., < 1 min ... Unless the viewer is using a 300 baud modem on a voice line. :cursing:  Then, well, what can I say. :lol:

I have since installed the Chrome browser and the code works just fine using it, also.

There is a test in progress from 2 viewers using Macs but I have not heard back from them yet.

I'll post the results here after I get the feedback ... just for da heck of it.

P.S. for 3D ... NOT "required" but .......... was the desired goal, heh, heh. :biggrin:
