Subject: Backsides of meshes don't render...why?

danidh ( ) posted Fri, 05 August 2011 at 6:11 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 10:08 AM

I run across this problem frequently...the back side of the figure/prop won't render.  I've attached an image and you can see the background through the costume's head...and you shouldn't be able to.

I use PoserPro 2010.  It doesn't matter what light set I use, the angle/focal point of the camera or if I use indirect lighting.  Can anyone give me some pointers on how to solve this?  Thanks.  Dani

Is Remove Backfacing Polys checked in your render settings?

Yes, it is.

And what happens when you tell Poser to stop removing things facing backwards?

Have you check your material setting? Could that Normal box be checked?

ThunderStone,

The polygons are gone - invisible, not just black.

When they are invisible, it is because "Remove Backface Polygons" is enabled - which danidh confirmed already.

The symptom corrected by normals forward is they show as black.

It renders!  Thank you so SO much.  I've been fixing this in postwork but knew there had to be a simple fix.  Wish I had posted my question earlier.  smile

What happens if there are backfacing polygons that need to be fixed on just one item?  I run across that problem when I use older products such as the Angelyna Wings.  Under the material settings I can't find "Remove backfacing polys" so how would I fix it without applying the universal render setting?

Sorry for all the questions.  I've been using Poser for about 10 years now, went from Poser 4 to PoserPro 2010...a bit different.

In the object's materials, check "Normals Forward" on every material so that any backfacing normals will render forward.

I'm not aware of a parameter or property that would help with that on a per-material basis.

However, it is possible to actually build a material that does that. I can think of some hacks that can be done with materials using the N or Normal node (tells which way something faces). But the N node is not relative to the camera, and so using it to test which way something is facing, with respect to the camera and not the world, is difficult.

Edge_Blend is a node that gives us an indication of facing the camera versus facing to the side, but sadly it was coded to give the same answer when facing away.

Among the many nodes I'd like to see added to Poser, an Edge_Blend that includes positive and negative directions would be fantastic.

Then we'd just use that in the Transparency to make back-facing things invisible.

Quoted for agreement. When you want them to render like P4, do that.
