Well, I can't speak for formats other than OBJ, but in the OBJ export dialogue, there's an option for "selection only" which will export only the selected mesh[s]. I would assume other formats would function similarly.

you're making an app speciic association (which makes sense). visibility has to do with what you can see in preview (eye icon) and/or render (image icon), not exporting. if you look in your Wavefront Obj export settings, the first option should be "Selection Only." just select the item or items you want to export, and check that box.
the other settings are kind of useful, too. i've got three export presets at present: one for props, one for morphs, and one for figures. i've never actually used the default.
edit: oops! x-post!
You can actually save those settings (selection only / polygroups/ etc) - thanks, KobaltKween! - by making your selections, then clicking the "+" next to Operator Presets and giving your presets a name. After that, you just chose your preset on export to .obj and you're laffin'...

Enjoy, Hedd... it's my clothing design studio (is Blender) and as they add capabilities and as I learn more, it's really going to be so exciting to make things (in my case: dynamic clothing) for Poser.
And yeah, I know about those closed sections thing - so much yet to discover!!

I mostly use hexagon for modeling but am getting into blender (and liking it ) but in hex I can have a number of meshes in my work space and can export them one at a time by hiding the ones I dont want to export
so is it possible to do that in blender it seems I export everything in my work area no matter if its hidden or not (even if its on a different layer)
