Subject: POSER VS DAZ

Now I' m really confused about Daz Genesis and Poser Pro because from both sides !!
As a Artist I just did my work with Poser pro .. As a Vendor as well ... But now because of the New Genesis Figure from Daz I gave Daz 4 a try . And I have to say . I was just blown Away because it was so easy to handle all the artistic relevant stuf for the First Time instead to Poser. And now with the content toolkit for the Daz pro Version that included the GoZ Bridge for Zbrush it seems to me Great doing the stuf also in Daz and leave Poser behind a Second Place. Just thought about because the New opportunitys. Now I'm confused where I my Focus is on in the future.

What do you think about the New Future of them?

This is going to get ugly fast...

Everyone should use whatever program fits their needs best. Neither is really "better", their main differences lie in their interfaces and a few specific features. Personally, I use DAZ Studio now, but I used Poser for years before switching and both programs are quite capable of creating excellent art.

I do not speak as a representative of DAZ, I speak only as a long-time member here. Be nice (and quit lying about DAZ) and I'll be nice too.

A HOMELAND FOR POSER FINALLY

Paloth ( ) posted Fri, 09 September 2011 at 7:00 AM

Poser Pro 2012 isn't available. Daz beat Smith Micro with an early release of Daz Studio 4 Pro, but I've found it of limited usefulness at this point,  almost a publicity stunt since they haven't made completed the manual. (Daz is very bad when it comes to documentation.) Unless you just want to play with figures and make renders, the only reason to buy Daz Studio 4 pro now is for the discount.

GoZ is nice, though. I'm wondering if Poser Pro 2012 will come with anything like Morphloader Pro allowing for the export of a posed figure and easy import for reversed morphing for JCMs. Personally, it doesn't matter since I will have both programs.

As for the Genesis figure...I pity the mainstream content creators who will now have to model their sexy dresses on that flat-chested androgonous default. lol (serves them right for dominating the market! ;-p)

Paloth-

ColorCurvature's PoseMorphLoader has offered the ability to work with posed figures in .obj for over a year now. Works with ZBrush, Hex, and about any other modeler

I saw where he offered it to SM on the RDNA forum, but don't know if anything will come of it.

Yes, I have it, but there are problems. The occasional flaw with shading aside, it is no longer available and probably won't work in Poser 2012 Pro 64 bit.

I have Poser 8, which is far less helpful than Daz Studio Pro 3 when it comes to importing morphs, so I've grown accustomed to using Daz Studio for this sort of thing. The inclusion of the GoZ feature makes it likely that I'll continue to use Daz Studio when creating moirphs.

Hey guys? Remember what I said about fanboyism?

The guy asked an innocent question - be nice.

My answer is that he asked it in the wrong forum, though not for the reasons you may think I hold:

Bloodboy, most (though not all) folks here in the Rendo Poser forum are sticking with Poser; sometimes for personal preference reasons, sometimes for technical reasons, sometimes for irrational ones (like ideology/hatred/whatever), and sometimes out of something one could call love for it.

Think of it as going to a Macintosh forum and asking the folks there how they like the new Windows Explorer Ribbon coming in Windows 8, or going to a Windows-centric forum and expressing awe at the App Store in the new Lion edition of OSX.

Let's just say that while most folks will remain silent, those who don't are going to include a lot of people whose replies are going to read as if the writer is a little constipated...

This thread might or might not have 'fanboys' in it, but no fanboyism has been expressed in this thread.

I use both programs so I am uniquely qualified to respond.

I wonder why Penguinisto thinks a thread with the title 'Poser VS. Daz' would receive more useful responses in a Daz forum.

By beating them to it first, Peng? :P

Honestly, no one can really give you an answer. P9/PPro2012 isn't out until the 20th of September, but you can see what it can do over at RDNA (and here and all over the net once the NDA has expired). DS4 may be 'out', but it is incomplete. Plugins either do not exist or have not been updated and released yet.

The Genesis mesh is not Poser compatible....as in you can not do the full body morphing in Poser. You can, however, do it in DS, then export using their Cr2 exporter, and using the already morphed figure in Poser. At least that is the claim. No one really knows how well it will work until we have both apps in hand....and at least when Poser 9 comes out, it will be complete and ready to go. I would also suggest looking at the Genesis morph packs and doing a little addition, just to see how much $$$ you might be sinking into it. Those same price ranges are a good benchmark when you start considering what -content- other than morphs (which you seem to have covered with Zbrush) might cost.

If you've looked at the posts by the beta testers, there are already plans underway to weightmap and distribute same for a lot of the existing Poser characters (without running afoul of anyone's IP). Content creators can still create for bloody Poser 4 and it will work in all versions after that. And most of DS's versions. But the Genesis creators will have to fork out $$$$ for the CCT kit; Poser developers just have to have Poser (well, in this case Ppro 2012, and regular P9 doesn't have some of the tools the big app has). The diverging tech is going to force just that; divergence.  Where it shakes out nobody can even guess; but I would think that the Poser market is simply too much of Daz's income to just toss it aside. Particularly in this economic climate. With 15 years of content to retrofit, Poser is in the better position, imho. And it is a more complete solution right out of the box.

I don't care to use studio because it doesn't work with a Wacom tablet mouse, may be lame but there it is, but I certainly don't care if someone else uses studio. None of my business. :-)

As the number of these repetitous threads increase, I'm more likely to suspect that they are just baiting, rather than honestly wondering.  But, I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

Actually, I hope both apps survive and flourish;  I wish I knew how to make equivalent D/S materials for my freebies, but I already have a list of paid license apps which I need to learn.  As Gandalf would say, "...not enough time!"  That said, this is my position;  it's just one man's view:

The doll is not my primary concern;  I'll put higher priority on sophistication of shaders, lighting, rendering, and on animation tools, including dynamic cloth and hair.  Advantage:  Poser.  Granted, I would rather that SM would make one good set of dolls (with good joint bending) than to make new ones every release.

Genesis may be the first DAZ new doll release to fail to gain a Poser market.  The new version of Poser may flop because of people abandoning it in favor of the Genesis doll.  But I'll not be surprised if DAZ releases a Poser-ready Genesis.  And I see a lot of Poser "early adopter" stars, so I think SM is doing OK, especially given the recession.

If this new Poser weight mapping works out well, I won't care that D/S had it before Poser.  I will be pleased if someone -more skilled than I!- updates Posette & Dork, the P9/PP2012 dolls, and Miki 3 (is there a male counterpart?)

As for the DAZ dolls, I'd like weight-mapped Aiko 3 & Hiro 3 dolls.

But if I had my druthers, I'd like to see Brad and Antonia take center stage, updated with Poser's new weight mapping.  For background "filler" dolls, I like Predatron's low-res folk.  We just need LotR-esque ears and clothes for these dolls, and I'm good to go.

Brad,  Antonia?  Do you hear opportunity knocking?  This is your time.

Exactly.  That's one reason Smith Micro's market capitalization has gone from over $600 million in January to $63 million today.  No money.

And it was also the truth.......or at least the fantasy of same.

And a lot of SM's trouble isn't Poser, but the nosedive in certain stocks, and the misses they have had with -other- technologies. Hopefully this version will start weaning folks off of P4, and convince them to upgrade....at least if they want the new toys.

Or hopefully to keep if from going on the market again and getting grabbed by oh, say, Autodesk......

I wouldn't worry. AutoDesk, Adobe et al have had plenty of opportunities to buy Poser. Heck for the money they've spent developing DS, maybe Daz could have bought it. It only gets bought by companies that mostly no one has heard of, which says something, though what, I'm not sure.

This, right here.

Any software development project that isn't a pure open-source effort is driven by money. Even many projects which are open-source are funded quite heavily by folks who benefit directly from the resulting product.

No money? You have a couple of options, both of which require a miracle:

  • The first is to go full-on open source, and hope for enough interested developers, with enough time and talent to spare. You'll also need a dedicated (and with no money, really dedicated) project leader, or lead team.

  • The second is to hope for angel investors or venture funding, and a business plan sufficient to get them to cut loose with the money.

  • Simply let it float around as freeware/abandonware until someone shows enough interest in it to purchase/buy it, like Poser was in the mid 1990s after Metacreation's demise.

Just the way it is, folks... you simply cannot level a charge of 'OAMG they're only in it for the money!', because both houses are equally guilty of that... they have to be. Poser's owning company has an obligation to its shareholders to do so, and DAZ' very survival as a company requires that they make an income as well.

====

Quote - Heck for the money they've spent developing DS, maybe Daz could have bought it.

DAZ already owns half of the Metacreations' original stable: Bryce and Carrara (formerly RayDream), respectively.

Corel owns Canoma, and keeps it in a codebase graveyard. I'd call it abandonware, but since Corel still owns the rights to it, the term wouldn't be technically correct.

This leaves Poser, which has had a far more interesting life to it. Smith Micro owns it now,.

I disagree with the idea of DAZ buying Poser as a good idea for the Poser-exclusive community. (I know, I know - gasp, right? Well, bear with me...)

You'd think it would certainly behoove DAZ to buy the thing if it could. OTOH, for Poser users (exclusively), this would be what is known as a Bad Thing(tm). Why? Because aside from the IP rights and salvable code that could be scraped out and put into D|S (dynamics, Firefly engine perhaps, some morph, joint, and materials editing bits)... they'd have no real use for it as a whole package, and it would end up as Bryce did - slowly left to die of old age, but kept around for those who still prefer and love it. Maybe make a few plugins for it to export content and JPs to D|S and/or Carrara.

BUT!

Yes, but...

...let's stop tape right there. Poser has a healthy life left in it. Tehre is no indication that Smith Micro is even considering such a thing... and we leave it at that.

I was speaking of the potential suitors for the old girl - (pre-DS for Daz), not how happy the kids would be with their new step daddy. Now that DS is reality, I expect you're veri right, though I'm not sure how many juicy bits there are that they'd want to cannibalize. I don't know what if any of Truespace was assimilated into the Microsoft Collective. I suspect it was just a random acqusition when Ballmer was clearing out his pocket change one day. Who knows, since they've decided to stick an (as of yet) uncessful smartphone UI onto Windows, MS may buy Poser and Win 10 will sport a revolutionary new Kinect enabled, USB FleshLight equipped, Naked Vickie interface - I might even upgrade.
