Made of cardboard with a plastic gun, the original toy was sold for a very short time in Europe (by Meccano), OZ and NZ (TolToys), Canada (Kenner) and in the UK (Palitoy), but never the USA. Over time it's become a Holy Grail amongst Star Wars collectors and an original will easily sell for over 500 quid (800 US Dollars).

This freebie version is presented as an example of how as as 3d artists we should always try and up our game, improve our work and explore new ways of working.

In this case it's a totally new construction methodology I'm developing. One that can convert most 2D images into 3D models. Apart from the guns and base clips, the rest of the set was created totally using the new technique. So I'm presenting this model here to showcase that.

Partly because it's a new process, and partly because the original toy was made by folding up bits of card, some
areas are not 100% perfect. But hey it's free!

Also the model isn't rigged like the original toy either. The Top Section (Ring and Gun) doesn't rotate or have moving guns, the trash compactor section doesn't move and the trash compactor door doesn't open. So if anyone does fancy rigging it theres an extra ungrouped .OBJ in the zip file.

Obviously like all Fan-Arts freebies it's strictly non commerical usage only. Which is how it should be :)

BTW - Over the next few days I'll also be creating another unique highly fun freebie using this method. So watch out for that!

But for now heres a link......

This is very cool, your model looks so realistic!

Cant be many left of those in real life, cheap toys tend to have a short lifespan, therefore its collectibility today.

Thanks - thats down to Vue's lighting system.

Yep and this one is also a great example of how something can become a modern cultural object,

The 1st film had just finished it's run in the cinemas and was still incredibly popular. So when this appeared a few months before xmas, first on the cover of a Palitoy booklet and a few weeks later in the home shopping catalogues popular at the time, this was the christmas pressie most small boys wanted.

But a limited short production run, combined with the catalogue companies inabilty to deliver, meant a lot of dissapointed kids.  Then the toy totally dissapeared from the range. Because this was never being released in the US, tended to be sold privately rather than at trade fairs, and most of the "customers" being 8-10 years old with hazy memorys.

It soon became "invisible" and took on a near mythical status amongst collectors, with some folks beliving it was a prototype or mockup. Along with things like the famed blue Snaggletooth or rocket firing Boba Fett.

Those lucky to have one tended not to announce it either, often being the gem to be shown to other collectors. Either to show off or to demonstrate collecting skills. Usually accompaned by the story of how it was found or how they'd ripped off the original owner.

It wasn't until the web, when some collectors wanted started to show their collection and trade via ebay, that it's existence became widely known again.

It's also an example of big companies can get things wrong, and with star wars stuff twice. First time Fox never belived that star wars merchandising would be that popular, though Lucas wisely did :) Second time with Phantom Menace, fox though we're not getting caught again and licensed 10,000's of items which didn't sell very well.

OBJ origami?

Kinda. The meshes/shapes are made and then assembled like a jigsaw puzzle.

That is really cool.  :woot:

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Hi, I'll have to get it out from my storage unit, but sure. It needs photographing anyway.

Thanks everyone!

Never seen that one before those, but the ship looks vaguely familar.
Maybe because it's rather Y-wing like.
Though a great bargain after looking at some of the prices out there!

Would also certainly offer to host this if anyone makes it, if thats required.

The space ship cost £10 - the command base was another tenner. The base is mostly cardboard, and I am surprised that it's not too battered. I knew of the ship, but the base was unknown to me, so I bought both.

It does and I've been thinking why that should be.

It's a Vue render using GI lights which is usually good for photo-realistic stuff and glass.
But like most 3d apps not always so real for metalwork or work. So I wonder if this time it's worked because these are flat shapes with non realistic paintings on them.

Very interesting story-and work!!
Thanks.

A little bit more on the haunted house.

Apols the WIPS are roughish, the claymation renders might show the idea a little bit better.

What's here is a 4 roomed house in the style of the old board gane.
Each room is distressed in a different way, each with a different type of floor.

Stuff like worn plaster with or exposing brickwork, stone floors or wattle and daub.
Though as you can see from the claymation one, it's not a texture or displacement map but modelled detail.

Next stage is clean some mis-aligned bits and texture. Then add some stuff like a staircase and simple items like cupboards and fire with cauldron. It will also be supplied as both bare rooms and populated rooms for maximum useabilty.
