Subject: can Sculptris make morph targets from exported .obj ?

MistyLaraCarrara ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 11:20 AM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 4:50 PM

does it keep the geometry clean?  or does it do unpredictable stuff to geometry?

is it easier than poser morph brush?

is it easier than wings3d?

there's no sculptris forum, so i'm wondering if it's a useful tool for poser

Thanks 😄

cough http://www.zbrushcentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=110 the Offical Sculptris Forum. but I don't see any poser heads there.. you can get help to learn it tho.

now you can make morphs from what I hear. don't subdivide the mesh in Sculptris seems to be the main advice... other than that....

Sculptris is the temptation into Zbrush, sounds like.

Misty, Sculptris can absolutely make the morph that you want and poser will accept it.

However, there are rules.  You must export only the part that you want to morph into Sculptris.

As you know V4 is broken down into hip, chest, face neck, right thigh, left thigh etc.

If you want to morph portions of the face, export ONLY the face as an .obj into Sculptris and include only As morph Target, Include body part names, and figure name in polygon groups into Sculptris, make your morphs and save as a .obj

Then in Poser, press load morph target and select the .obj.

A dial will appear so you can adjust the morph.

DO NOT LOAD THE COMPLETE V4 BECAUSE YOU WILL GET WRONG NUMBER OF VERTICES WHEN USING MORPH TARGET.

If you can export your V4 part save the head, remove the clutter from your hard drive using a good cleaner tool that removes junk from your registry, temp files cache etc.  Jan

No joy for me.

The mesh gets triangulated in Sculptris. I get the "Wrong Number of Vertices" error on import back to Poser.

Blender has some really good sculpting tools. I know people like to gripe about Blender's interface but the sculpting tools are really easy to use. It can do symetrical sculpting and it wont triangulate your mesh. Sculprtis is great for sculpting an original mesh(for later retopo) but not for morph targets. Blenders great fo retopo too.

Anything so I can get this morph for the V4 Bodysuit out of my system. :)

I have Blender on here too, so I'll try that.

dlfurman ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 8:25 PM

Quick question, what version number for Sculptris?

I was using 1.01. Is there a later version?

Just checking something else...the object triangulates on import in to Sculptris.

Are there any options to preset in Sculptris before importing objects from Poser?

I'm using Alpha 6 here.. and I just imported a mesh in, it's all quads.... edit exported it, still all quads.

Plutom ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 8:34 PM

Dif, when you take this breast morph directly from sculptris to Poser, do you get the wrong number of vertices

Cybermonk ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 8:36 PM

She was talking about making a morhp with sculptris. I was offering an alternative to it. So.....

you  need to click on the chest in poser before using the load morph target

Plutom ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 8:38 PM

Yes, there is a later version out go to Pixologic.com

Plutom ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 8:39 PM

Yes it does triangulate, but it still works JUST as long as you don't do any subdivisions as Kai stated

@Plutom and Khai-J-Bach

Then the sub-D process happens when I import.

Here's the step-by-step after saving bodypart out of Poser.

  1. Fire up Sculptris. (thought I d'ld the Alpha 6 version????)

  2. See the ball in the middle of screen.

  3. Click "Import Obj" button, upper left hand corner.

  4. Get dialog "Import 'V4 Suit for Morph.obj" Facing Camera is lit, Don't Resize is not.

Click "New Scene' button, I don't want to add it to the sphere.

  1. Get new dialog box "Got to paint mode?" OBJ has mapping data, go to paint?

OK/Cancel?

I click cancel.

  1. Object comes in and clicking the "Wireframe button" upper left I see the mesh is subdivided.

OY!

Will Alpha 6 clear this up? Are there any settings I should be on the look out for before importing the object?

Steps in poser:  Select (in your case) chest only.

                        export as .obj

                        check As Morph Target

                                 Include body part names

                                 Include figure name

then in Sculptris, do what you did:

Should look like this if you have Alpha 6

dlfurman ( ) posted Tue, 13 September 2011 at 10:37 PM

RATS!!

Got Alpha 6, looked good on import, but back in Poser, exploding mesh!!!

Any settings I should look out for?

Can you use symmetry?

Tried again, no symmetry and it's all good. There is a warning about non-symmetrical elements being removed. Wow. I thought this mesh was symmetrical.

If you're still getting the error and as long as you have not actually divided the mesh, you should be able to also load the thing into UVMapper (I use Pro so I don't know if UVMapper Classic has this) and import the original body part's via the reorder vertices command. Should solve the problem if all else fails.

dlfurman ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2011 at 8:23 AM · edited Wed, 14 September 2011 at 8:24 AM

Ah, yes!

It's working. Just have to get an acceptable look to the morph. Looks good in Sculptris, meh when when back in Poser. There is some pulling/tearing of mesh, but I'll have to work that out.

No symmetry! Bit of a bummer, but I just have to be careful.

Thank you for all your help.

the triangulate could be helpful for dynamic cloth   can it do the special tris hex tesselate?

i finished the Sculptris d/l - it's alpha 6 version.

dlfurman ( ) posted Wed, 14 September 2011 at 3:17 PM

Solved a potential problem, alas the solution is an old utility that cannot be downloaded.

To solve the symmetry problem:

Export the bodypart (or whatever) following the instructions in this thread.

Follow the instructions for importing in to Sculptris. Do not bother with symmetry.

Work on one side (a small bit of overlap is ok)

Export out of Sculptris as directed.

Now what to do? Dig deep in your Poser file backups (around 2003 or so lol!) and try to find MT Mirror II!

If you had signed up to the old PoserPros site, this link will give you more details onm working with MT Mirror II. (Links, alas are busted)

Apparently this works for me, YMMV.

Great! I did not have this site. I knew I had the file (Had a bad data loss early and backup EVERYTHING!) and doing some sleuthing (gotta love Google) got the links to the old PoserPros site and using the WaybackMachine site to the original site.

This is cool!

Thanks again!

Try Winebottler: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/

A lot of simple Windows programs will run on the Mac with the help of Winebottler. I have used it with Daz Windows installers for example, and MT Mirror does run. I didn't try it out fully though.

is there anyway to tell if subdividing is off?

the Detail bracket has a Q in it.

Misty, the slider just under the Detail function all the way to your left.

You can tell when you drag your mouse across the surface, if it tessalates, it is subdividing.

By clicking cntrl z , it will undo the tessalation..
