Subject: Poser 9 dynamic hair

I'm having trouble with dynamic hair in Poser 9.  Not sure if this is a new problem with Poser 9 (I didn't use Poser 8 much), but I did search this forum and didn't see the problem mentioned.

The Genesis Hair (a proxy that's supposed to speed up simulations, no relation to the new DAZ figures) doesn't work correctly in Poser 9.  In particular, it has two skullcaps, each with its own hair.  The point of this is to allow you to turn off the second skullcap when it's not needed, and turn it on when it is (for closeups, say).  Also, having two skullcaps lets you vary the hair - each can have different kinkiness, lenth variations, color, etc., for a more natural look.

But Poser 9 doesn't let me use both skullcaps/hairs.  It only shows one when I go into the hair room.  I cannot bring up the other one.

The results with only one hair look terrible.  Way too sparse, even with the hair density increased.

Hm, could be a number of things. The selection process in the Hair Room is slightly different than in the Pose room. As far as sparsity, did you remember to show the hairs as populated?

Are you talking about a render or a preview? One thing that usually needs to be done with dynamic hair is that you need to go into the Advanced Settings in the Material Room and check Opaque in Shadow... usually improves things a great deal.

Render and preview.  The second hair and skullcap cannot be accessed in the hair room.  But they still display and render.  Only the hair on the second skullcap is unaffected by the simulations.  It  moves with the figure because it's parented to its head, but it doesn't drape with gravity or blow in the wind or anything like that, because simulations don't affect it.  It just sticks out like a haystack.  The hair on the first skullcap is affected by simulations and behaves as you would expect.

I can make the second hair prop invisible via the hierarchy editor, but I really wish it worked like it used to with Poser 5 and 6.

Hm, do you really need the second skullcap? Any reason you can't move its hairgroups to the other skullcap?

The reason for two skullcaps is to speed up rendering for animations, etc.  Perhaps it's not as necessary these days, with faster computers and an improved Hair Room.

But the skull caps are really low-poly, and because of the nature of dynamic hair, that limits the amount of hair you can grow on them.

Where can I find this Genesis skullcap to try it for myself?

The Genesis Hair used to be in Free Stuff (for V3 and Furrette), with a product in the Marketplace that contained proxies for a variety of figures.  It included a tutorial that was very useful for dynamic hair.

But it seems the creator, Kirwyn, has left Rosity.  All his products and free stuff are gone, and he's taken down his gallery as well.

Attached Link: Jessi with Genesis Hair

Link is to a brief animated GIF of the Genesis Hair for Jessi that used to be in free stuff.

It seems there were some fundamental changes made in the Hair Room, sometime between Poser 6 and now. Apparently, many furred animals no longer work as they used to, either.

There were really some big hair improvements between Poser 5 and Poser 6.  In particular, the Poser 6 dynamic hair had skullcaps a tenth the resolution of Poser 5, which made simulations work much better.

Not sure where it's gone since.  Is there any dynamic hair included with Poser 9?  I haven't found any, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Hi randym77.  I'm still here.  All my stuff was taken down as a measure of solidarity with other Poser freebie artists.  But I'm still very much into Poser.  Just got Pro 2012 and have been working on a new project.  As far as my Genesis Hair...A year or so ago, I had a hard drive crash and my backup device failed as well.  I Lost a lot of work including Genesis Hair.  If the file is small enough, you can send it to my Email address. Just send an IM if you're interested and I'll provide it.  I'd be happy to go over it to see what I can find out.
