Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 20 6:12 am)
You never did need the internet even with P8 you simply dont have the correct version of Adobe flash and or Air installed or your firewall Av is blocking access.. I know because I also never connect my Poser machine to the internet, and I have been using P8, Pro2010, P9, and Poser2012 all this time. Great library and no problems. Get the correct download for flash player (the full download) and your problems are solved.
Befor you start in with "well Poser 8 library wants to use the internet" No it does not, it uses your PC home addres which does not have anything to do with being connected to the internet. Everyone has the same PC home adress.
There are gads of threads on this subject from P8 times. I think BB answered this question till he was blue in the face. So there is a wealth of info at your disposal.
Stop saying whatever you think.
It uses Flash. It does not need to be updated all the time. In fact, if you install the one it is intended for and disconnect from the network forever, your machine will never ever need another copy of Flash.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
I thought Poser installed it for you, but if it did not, just go to a computer at your library - a computer you are OK with destroying by connecting to the Internet. Be sure to wear gloves.
Go to the Adobe site. Instead of installing, just do Save As and save the installer.
Burn it to CD.
Wash your hands.
Put on new gloves.
Take the CD home.
Install Flash.
Burn the CD. This time I mean set it on fire with a lighter. Gasoline may help with this.
Spray your computer for bugs.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
The Pro 64bit uses Air, because Flash is still in beta for 64bit Windows. You can install the beta and switch the library to Flash instead of Air if you like to.

So, in a nutshell, Poser 9 still uses Flash and, if I have Flash issues, I will have issues with Poser 9. That's all I needed to know. I did get Poser 8 working, once, and then I installed the update and it quit working. I tried the flash help instructions from here and still couldn't get the libraries to come back and gave up. Maybe it was a Norton's issue even though I told it to disable the firewall. I just know that Poser 7 works fine and Poser 8 doesn't. I just bought a new PC (two weeks ago) that has the new Adobe Photoshop (the lite version--not the CS-4). I haven't tried Poser 8 yet. Do you think it will have a version of Flash that will work?
It is a Norton issue, I think. Robbybobby has the same problem and we're going to try to fix it with me remotely operating his computer.
I did some research on Norton configuration dialogs. How confusing. I don't expect anybody could figure it out by you telling them what is or is not in front of you. I'm hoping that with me actually seeing it and operating it, I'll sort out what the issue is.
I can tell you from the little bit of Googling I've done looking at Norton configuration dialogs, that is a program that you should not be using unless you're very technical.

In my research, it looks like Norton completely changes their configuration user interface just about every year. So I cannot even point you to something general.
Here's a page describing how to fix it for a program called nmsrvc from Pure Networks.
I don't know what that program is, but Norton messes it up. If that is your version, and the dialogs look like that, try the same instructions, only you want to do it for Poser.exe, not the program discussed on that page.

I just want to add, that your firewall is not protecting you by interfering with Poser - it is not needed. Poser only has one listening port open, and it will not accept a connection from outside your machine. In other words, it has "firewall" style rules built into it, even if you have no firewall at all.

I just found the problem for Rob. Posted this at RDNA. I'm posting it here as well, as a general FYI.
Good news. Rob let me into his computer and I found the problem.
It was not Norton.
I wasted some time trying to configure Norton to allow Poser to work. No joy.
I completely disabled Norton and still got connection refused on that port. No joy.
I verified that the Windows firewall was disabled as well. No firewalls running, still no joy.
Hmmm.
Downloaded Microsoft Sys Internals utility TCPView to see who had port 11530 open. It was AOL!!!!
Rob had long ago used AOL but he removed it - or so he thought. There was this one program:
aoltpspd.exe
That had a BUNCH of ports open, just grabbed them for no reason. One of them was the Poser port 11530.
I killed this program and Poser and its library WORKED PERFECTLY.
Even with the Norton firewall turned back on, the library WORKED PERFECTLY.
So - the problem is AOL Communication Services. The program aoltpspd.exe is stealing ports and this prevents Poser from working.
I looked up in several TCP registries to see which company had registered their use of port 11530. Neither SM nor AOL had done so.
So - if you have problems, look in Task Manager for aoltpspd. If you see it you need to uninstall AOL Communications Services.
And this is AOL Topspeed, specifically. If you don't need that then get rid of it. It's evil.

Thank you. I'll look for that program. I don't want Norton's but HP sticks it on there whether you want it or not--bleh. The computer companies add so many progrms you never use to new PCS that just hog memory and sometimes cause problems. I'm sure they get paid to include it which, theoretically, keeps the price of the PC down.
I love Poser and want to stay up-to-date. I'll try installing 8 this weekend and see if it works. If I can see the libraries in 8, I should be able to see them in 9, I hope.
Quote - I refuse to connect my Poser PC to the internet after losing a ton of material to a virus several years ago. (I will never trust McAfee again!) I was never able to use Poser 8 because of the ActiveX setup for the libraries. They just won't show up. Is Poser 9 set up the same way? If so, I'll stick with 7and spend my money on content instead of software. Thank you!
McAfee isn't a bad program, but you can't just trust 100% in any anti-virus program. Avoid risky downloads, never click on email links or open emails from sites that you don't deal with. ALWAYS have 2 different emails that you use (One for junk and other for business only). I get bank emails all the time through hotmail, but I don't use my hotmal address for serious purposes, so I know right away not to even bother.
Highly recommended not to use hacked, cracked, or warez programs because that only opens the door that any anti-virus program won't be able to close. I could go through 50 things that the user should do in order to avoid virus before even getting to the anti-virus settings that should be used. Such as configuring firewalls and program permissions. I could go through all of the spyware preventions as well.
The reason I'm mentioning this because it appears that you are completely blaming it on McAfee. I've seen all types of anti-virus programs fail, and it wasn't the software's fault, it was the user that made it possible for the virus to work it's way in.
If you are depending on the Antivirus 100% then all I can say is just get ready to lose some more information from your hard drive.
