I have been working on a scene for months now. I have even rendered a bunch of pictures from this scene in the past. Today when i click render it CRASHES!! It reads all the maps and shadow maps but once its ready to start the render it crashes =-(

Any clue how to fix this?

I've had this happen (with small files) and after re-building the scenes from scratch was able to render them fine.  I thought the file(s) had somehow got corrupted.  Are you able to load the scene into a text editor and scan for errors?  Do you have earlier versions of the file?

Somethings you might be able to try is changing your render settings, clearing away any cache files and/or temp files.  I know I still have hair sets that don't play well with certain of my saved light sets.  Some combinations simply can't be rendered with my current setup.  You say you've rendered the scene before so I think you don't have that issue here.

Maybe someone else will come by with some suggestions.  Best wishes,

i can try and redo the scene from scratch. one problem, the light sets i have in the scene is there a way i can save them so i can re use them on the next scene? I would never be able to re do the lights with saving them somehow

Yes go to your lights library and add the lights to the library, the same as saving anything else.

Also can you resave the scene file? use a different file name and save it as a pz3 and see if it will work for you.

Try to use the external render engine, this may help if it's a memory issue.

Lower the bucket size in the rendering options. This may help too.

It could be a memory problem, especially if you don't have a 64-bit OS.

Bantha's comment made me think of something else.  Memory issue.  Have you made any changes to your system recently?  You mention you were able to render portions of the scene before, and I assumed the file changed, but did your system change?

Certainly try to Render in Separate Process.  That's a good bit of advice as well.

External render engine? How do i do that?

Edit menu, General Preferences, Render tab.  Select Separate Process.

I had an experience that may help. I have Poser 8, never had any trouble with it, then got a virus, cleared it all out, but the residual was that my P8 was now very unstable and would crash on renders it used to fly through. After trying everything with no luck, by chance, I right-clicked on the program icon and checked under properties - under compataility - and it was set to be compatiable with Windows Vista. I changed it to Windows 7, and now everything is fine.

Ok i rebuilt the scene from scratch and it still crashes. I also tried the external render but crashes as well.

i attached my settings i am using in firefly. Maybe i have to change something, but i do not want to loose any quility to my image.

Oh and i have 1.18 GB of free system memory left on my MAC. So i dont think its a memory issue

Not sure what else to suggest.  Re-building my scene worked for me.  You might try turning off your lights, one at a time, to see if that is the offending element.  You could probably try lowering your render settings as well.  IR 90, Min Shading rate a little higher.  I wish I could be more help.

I have that problem quite often with 8. normally like Bantha said.. I lower my bucket size. Renders slower but if you want that render it maybe worth the wait. :)
