Subject: Socks!

I recently started using Poser 8 again and I'm working on a pose with Alyson which requires her outfit contain socks. I noticed Poser 8 did not ship with socks among the latest content (unless I missed them?). There are some legacy socks available, but I always thought they looked pretty bad.

Specifically they should look like typical female white cotton socks, maybe up to mid calves or lower. Slouch socks would look good too.

I'm completely inexperienced with the Cloth Room. Could I create a decent pair of socks using the Cloth Room, without Poser expertise? I didn't see much available for Alyson to download.

Thanks in advance for the advice!  :)

The only practical use for the Cloth room is using dynamic clothing to dress your characters.  It is not the place to create content nor is Poser the most versatile program to generate it.  You really need apps more suited for generating the mesh and shaping it like Blender, Wings3D, Hexagon, etc.

sometimes a legacy content can look nice with some re-texturing.

You can always paint them on a skin texture then use displacement to give them some depth.  I dunno about Alyson but the DAZ figures generally have a sock morph (which almost works) for the toes.

Of course, if your model is wearing shoes the toes may not be a problem if they're covered up.

That's an interesting idea Sam...had not considered something like that.

I think I'm going to start over using Victoria 4 since I will have access to a lot more clothing options. If I'm not getting anywhere, I'll take a shot at painting them on as a texture.

Just out of curiosity, I dug out an old texture set I made of some painted on clothes for V3.  At the time I used bumps rather than displacement, so I changed everything over to displacement and it looks - though I say so myself - pretty good.

No screenshot so you'll have to take my word for it.  Would I lie? :)

The advantages of painted clothes for things like underwear and socks are:  less RAM overhead, no poke through and instant, no fail conforming.  With a good displacement map you can make them look realistically bulky, too.  In all truth, I can't really think of a downside.
