Subject: DAZ4 Free Download, W7, and existing files

cedarwolf ( ) posted Sun, 09 October 2011 at 10:56 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 3:12 AM

I recently had to purchase a new computer, Windows 7, and backed up all my DAZ and Poser files to a USB Book Drive months prior to the replacement.  I downloaded and installed the DAZ Studio 4 that is free, went to set up my files, and it won't read my previous content over on the USB drive.  Is it a W7 issue, a DAZ4 issue, or do I have to re-download everything and reinstall it because I keep getting an error message that says the content from the compressed files may not have installed correctly?

Thanks

One issue may be  if your running 32 or 64 bit and then trying to install a Daz program for the opposite bit.

I had that issue. I got this computer W7 64-bit. My DS was a 32 bit and wouldn't work. I had to by the 64 bit DS4 Advanced upgrade.

Oh, that's lovely!  I downloaded it because I can't afford the other versions and now I'm possibly stuck with another piece of software I can't use.  Well, crud!  Thanks for the tip!

Is your new computer a 64-bit? If so, contact tech support.... see if there's someway you can patch into a 32-bit version of DS with W7 64-bit. (Also, using the computer's installer files from older versions of Windows didn't work.)

Maybe they can help?

Good luck!

Just checked, yep, it's 64 bit.  I'll give them a yell Monday and see what they have to say.  Again, thanks for the tips.  I'll get this thing to work yet!

Check to see if you have a Program Files and a Program Files (x86) folder, if you do then your on a hybrid system (can use 32 & 64 bit) like the vast majority of 64 bit users, if you only have a Program Files then your on a pure 64 bit system and can only use 64 bit software.

All versions of Windows 7 will run 32 bit applications. What do you mean by won't read - DS can't see the content, which was on the drive in its installed state, or the installers on the drive won't run, or simply that you get teh "May not have installed correctly" message - the last you can safely ignore, just click Yes it installed correctly.

What I did was set a file path to my external drive and I am able to read and use all my DAZ & Poser stuff. I have far to much to even think of reinstalling anything.Just make sure you add the directory to your external drive.  It works just fine for me

Hmmm - I've used the older Win installers for DAZ and my Micrografx (a 32-bit graphics program like Photoshop). Absolutely nothing worked to get those 2 programs to run on my 64 bit computer. I had to find an (old) upgraded Micrografx (64 bit) and upgrade my DS3 to DS3A - then upgrade to DS4A.....

I thought about using the external drive... but it wouldv'e ran waaaay toooo sloooow...  ;o)

I run Photoshop 7 (32bit) and DAZ 32&64 on my 64bit lqptop. I have 2 external 1.5 t-bite drives and i have no problems. os is win7.  DAZ will run, but it is all in how you set it up.  So, yes! it may be good for you to get intouch with DAZ they are very good at hepling get set up, I have called then a number of times and will do if i need them.

I was finally able to get the program to recognize the files on the USB drive.  I ended up resetting the paths and then restarting the machine.  I guess the zipped files I have I'll just have to hand install, just like before, but that's ok.  Each time I do it I refresh my memory as to where everything is.

Thanks for the help, everyone.  As always, the communities here are the best source and resource on the planet!  Give yourselves a hand!!

Attention cedarwolf:

Not one to drop names on someone I have no idea about but try contacting Kraig Hausman at Daz. If he can't help, then I guess he'll know someone who can. Me I ran into your problem when I converted but sinse I was using an external drive WD with 1 T/byte memory, my problems were insignificant when it came to adding my original files.

Remember Daz goes to Studio/content, where as Runtime is not to be messed about with, just add everything to Runtime and let is sort itself out, that way problems should be minimalistic.

Lonewolf
