Subject: Vue 8 & RAM

I just upgraded my OS to Windows 7 64 bit and added more RAM memory for a total of 12 GBs.  In your opinion would that be enough to run Vue 8 Complete smoothly with Poser figure import?  I can add more memory to make it a total 0f 16 GB, but I didn't know if I'd really benefit from adding more.

Depends on how many figures, depends on reposing and using the Poser shader tree or not, and if using full res textures or smaller res. With 4 gigs of ram, one poser human figure, textures at full res, reposing/shader tree off, I had no problem in Vue8.

When I was running 32 bit Windows 7 with 4 gigs ram I always had Vue telling me that it was running out of memory--I could never get the results I wanted.  I had no problems with Poser figure import in Vue prior to Version 6--but after that for some reason I was always running out of memory.  That's why the minimum requirements posted on E-ons website make me laugh--I could get Vue to do what I wanted it to do with a computer with much better specs.  I really think they should be more upfront--when they show you sweeping panoramas and really complex images they should tell potential customers what specs the computers had that generated those images.

Bruno's right, it depends on a lot of factors. I run Vue 9 Infinite with 8 Gig RAM and use Poser a lot in my images, but it still chokes if I try to do too much. You have 4 more so it should be better than mine.

My next pc will have 16 in, soon hopefully..

Injustice will be avenged.

Well, I'll seen how it goes--I don't think it will hurt to add more ram since it is so cheap; I'm also using 64 bit versions of Photoshop and Pinnacle Studio which could benefit from it.

I've been running 64bit with 16GB of RAM for a few months now and Poser figures rarely put a dent in Vue like they did on my old 32bit 3GB system.  However I can't really say if that is because of the 64bit or the RAM.

If it was a concern I'd try throwing figures into a scene one at a time till it couldn't cope anymore.

If adding more RAM doesn't help, I don't know what will.  I've spent a lot of money on Vue over the years--I just upped the RAM to 16 gb--and if that doesn't work I'm about to give up on Vue.  I have Cararra--though the natural landscapes aren't as impressive I've yet to have it gag on a Poser figure once.  I might also try Collada import, perhaps that will simplify the figures enough so that they don't hog all the memory.  I might also try older figures with simpler maps, like Michael 2.  Boy it sure can be frustrating at time.  I have a 2.6 ghtz i7 processor, a Nvidea 9800 series video card with 1 gb ram--so if it doesn't work nicely now I will assume only a very powerful Workstation computer will do what the lovely expamples I see on the Eon website will do the trick and I don't love Vue that much as to upgrade my whole system.

Didn't Mark just say all works well for him with 16gigs of ram?

I'm sorry I misread his post.  I was kind of out of it this morning. That's for your input, I hope it works as well for me on my system.

32-bit can only use 2GB of RAM.  Which means ~1.4GB of RAM is available for Vue once Windows and other apps have started after bootup.

I really appreciate all your replied, thanks for being patient with me.  I've just had major computer problems lately and my workhorse computer is in the shop again--Windows issues--so I'm a bit stressed out.  I'd always wanted to have a 64 bit OS on that computer for my graphics applications and now when all the bugs are mopped up I will have it with the glorious 16 GB ram.

12 gig is my weapon of choice for Vue

I'm running 8Gb of ram on a 64bit sytem and I'm running out of memory for the large scale terrains I visualize.  Currently, a 12km by 13km area, populated with tree and vegeration eco systems tends to choke and blow up for me unless I'm very selective on my camera angles - in other works, don't peek over into the next valley and keep the clouds to a minimum.

I'm waiting for the news of the new Intel systems to come out - in a week or so.  The Intel X79 chipset will allow up to 64Gb of ram on the modo (with 8Gb sims - 32Gb w/ 4Gb sims).  I'm less enthused about Intels' pricing strategy.  Since AMD botched the Bulldozer CPU, Intel has decided to not sell the 4-core version of the new CPUs until the spring - which would have been the more cost-effective way to go.

For those of you running out of ram, the X79 chipset boards may be the way to go, but you may want to wait 6 months until the $350 CPU is released.  BTW - the upper end X79 mobos have 8 simm slots.

Well I just got my computer back from the shop, so it will be a while before I can reinstall Vue 8 Complete (had to have a clean Windows install).  When I do I'm very eager to see what Vue will do with the 16 GB of Ram I not have.  From what I'm reading here it should be grand--I don't see too sweeping landscapes, I mostly want natural setting to render my Poser figures in and also the use the beautiful lighting set ups of Vue to do more of a studio look.  Since Vue 4 I've struggled with memory running out on my 32 bit computers, my 64 bit laptops did better with Vue, but they didn't have all that memory--my current laptop is running 6 GB (which was a marked performance improvement over the 4 GB, 32 Bit system)--with expandability to 8 GB (which I hope to do next year.  I also got new nvidea graphics card for the desktop, so that should help some too.

the thing I'm missing in all the info

  • you do use the 64-bit version of Vue, don't you? If not, re-download and re-install otherwise you still have to cope with memory limits.

  • I'm not sure if it makes a difference whether you're combining 64-bit Vue with the 32 bit Poser or the 64-bit PoserPro. I run everything 64 bit. The major killer is not Poser but a massive eco-system (see my gallery, the two recent images are Vue and required about 4Gb user RAM to render)

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

I am running the 64 bit versioin of Vue 8 Complete because I've finally have a 64 bit version of Windows installed.  After Vue Infinite 5, I'd always had trouble running out of memory in the 32 bit version of Vue on 32 bit Windows unless it was a very simple scene.

I reinstalled Poser 8 so that I can do direct Poser inports into Vue--and that works fine.  I had recently upgraded to Poser Pro 2012 and tried a collada export to Vue, but the geometry was a little blocky and the Poser 8 import looked better and more consistent.  I really don't like reposing in Vue, so I'll probably just import the Poser figure as a static figure and if I need to repose do it in Poser and update it.

Someday I hope to have Vue 10 Complete and then I can elliminate Poser 8 entirely.
