I thought exactly the same thing!

Maybe (if my own experience is any indication) it's that Brits who were kids in the 1960's or 70's are less likely than their American counterparts to have had their teeth braced into perfection at a young age, so if they're at all self-conscious, they learn to smile with a firmly closed mouth, and the habit carries well into adulthood, long after they have veneered their teeth into straight and sparkly wonders?

Then again, maybe I just partly recognize her.
