Subject: How to generate animated smoke elements in Poser?

JimIn310 ( ) posted Tue, 29 November 2011 at 9:37 PM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 8:32 PM

For a project I'm doing for work, I need to generate in Poser 9, moving smoke from a missle, an aircraft engine after being hit by it and distant plume for the downed plane.  Can anyone suggest what plug-in(s) to use and anywhere one can view a tutorial on how to use them.  I know just enough about Poser to be dangerous (to myself at least).

The animation does not need to be photo-realistic, just good enough to read as smoke.  Also has anyone been able to generate moving fire in Poser, again it does not need to be photorealistic.

Thank you

Nerd3d had a smoke tool over at Daz3d. Jepe has some smoke panels (sort of 1 dimensional panes with smoke). And there's these 2 here

Kazam561 -

Thank you for your post.  I know about the products you mentioned, but due to the angles and camera movement in the shots, a 2D prop will not work.  What is needed is a particle generator (I think, again I know just enough to be dangerous to myself).  I have read posts that seem to indicate that this exists, but none list the name or the writer of the add-on.

Blender Guru has a tutorial on smoke simulation. Above my level at this point, but it appears to be what you are looking for.

Nice tutorial site. Thanks Nobodyinparticular!

dlfurman-

Thank you for the link.  I contacted Daz3d and was told the add-on has not been updated for Poser 8 or 9.

nobodyinparticular -

Thank you very much for the link!  I'l be lying if I said I understood all he is talking about, but this is the sort of tutorial I had been looking for.

Off the top of my head, I can think of one possible way, although I haven't actually tried it.  I would apply a smoke video to a flat plane as an animated texture and position the plane so that it looks like the smoke is emanating from the crashed aircraft..  To do this I use the movie node in the materials room and apply a transparency map video over the smoke video.  Here is an example of using the movie node.  Click on the Editorial tab.   This one doesn't have any transparency maps applied to it but I think you get the idea.

Hi trying to do this visual effect with poser native tools is a nonstarter IMHO
you should be considering the various post effect options.

Cheers
