Subject: Poser Hangs on Importing .obj Files?

Ragtopjohnny ( ) posted Tue, 06 December 2011 at 12:00 AM · edited Sun, 19 January 2025 at 5:56 AM

Hello all.

Poser has me nervous here .

I have been able to import .object files every time I use the program up until this evening.

I'm trying to import a model car I'm working on right now, and when you import it, you see the whole bar go across to where it completes, but nothing gets imported.  No error message, just hangs in that spot afterward.

It's driving me crazy. :cursing: This is how I check my work -- don't ask me what's going on, hopefully some of you out there may be able to offer suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks in advance It's almost 1am over here, so hitting the sack. Will see if you're able to help me in the morning.

From what have you exported the .obj file you're trying to import?  Is it an especially large file?  Have you been able to import earlier .obj exports of the same geometry?

If the .obj has some kind of formatting error which is causing trouble for Poser, it might help if you run it through UV Mapper.

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Clean the OBJ up using Meshlab.   I do sometimes get this behaviour with OBJs imported into Poser.  Typically, there's something not perfectly right with the mesh, and Poser doesn't like it.

Spanki created a free program called STOMP that fixed obj files.  The links that I have are dead, but you can send him a message and see if he has it linked somewhere.

Here is what it is and how it works.  I'm really stupid when it comes to programs, and that UV Mapper is beyond me.  This program is simply import and export, nothing else involved. It does the work for you:

  1. Save a copy of your .obj file in another directory.
  2. Open Stomp
  3. Open the .obj file in your geometries folder
  4. Save it back out into the same folder, using the same name.

Here is the picture of the settings you save with.

Is there a link for meshlab? Will try to look for it and see if it works.  I was able to get the same exact model imported just hours before, now suddenly nothing.

Will also try STOMP and see if that works.  I'll email the author.  Thanks for the tips, will try and see what happens. 😄

Opening a obj in uvmapperfree, and just saving it again solves a lot of possible problems too.

Hmmmm ---

Worth a shot.  I still tried again with Meshlab, but Meshlab kept crashing on me all the time.

Will try the UVMapperfree though, have that.

Thanks.

All the programs mentioned here are good, but Poseray is more specific to Poser.  Besides fixing up OBJ's, it can handle 3DS and LWO.  You can check it out at

MeshLab doesn't preserve groups and materials and turns quads into traingles.

Use PropViewer 3, it can correct most the problems of a mesh.

What version of Poser are you using?  P8 & PP2010 had unpredictable issues with OBJ import.  However, my experience was that either pieces were missing or the OBJ import failed *in toto*.  The only problem I had with Poser dying on OBJ import turned out to be the *Catalyst* utility for ATI Radeon video cards - something to do with Open GL.

The OBJ import problem was fixed with P9 & PP2012.  I have thrown some hideous geometry at them with not a single import fail.  This pair of trees was one of my test OBJs.  It has many (strictly convex) n-gons, and the leaf n-gons are non-planar, yet P9/PP2012 imports it and renders it correctly.

If you're running Poser on Win7 it could be a problem with the GUI freezing rather than the obj format. If you think this applies trying exiting every other application running on the desktop to see if Poser unfreezes.

I have Poser 7, Poser Pro, P8, PP2010, and PP2012 on a 64bit Win7 system and have not encountered an OBJ import problem, except for the known P8/PP2010 fault. shruggy emoticon
